Sam I Am (Book One of the October Trilogy) ReviewLogan, a lonely and frustrated high school senior girl, is more than ready to pay attention when new boy Sam shows an interest in her. But she soon finds herself the target of a terrible obsession, for the month of October is a special time when the door to the land of the dead eases open and all it takes is one mistake for something old and dreadful to slip through into our world and take form. With her terrible family life and more imagination than is good for her, Logan has more reason than most to be tempted by what is on offer.

This story is fast-paced and well written, with a rich and internally consistent supernatural background, in which Heather Killough-Walden's knowledge of Celtic mythology shines through. The opening scene, on the Druid island stronghold of Anglesey as it is stormed by the Romans, grabs one straight away, and the climatic scene at the school Halloween Ball is truly frightening in how it portrays the ease with which normal people can be swayed into committing dreadful deeds by one charismatic person (bringing to mind Lord of the Flies).

In my opinion this is the best story yet by Heather Killough-Walden.
