Sunny Spells - Occasional Showers ReviewWith amusing takes on the characters he encountered in 30 years of vacationing in the small town of Sneem in Ireland, Christoph Fechler's book is an easy read. The book leaves the reader with a wishful smile for simpler times. As someone from a similarly small community, many of his characters seemed familiar to me. Even more so, his book made me miss the ones I had known growing up.
The book is centered around the people of Sneem in county Kerry, and Mr. Fechler's observations of them. However, it does not come across as a 1st world anthropological study of a more primitive culture. The authour has a real affection for his subjects. He writes very descriptively of their perceived oddities, but always with a jovial caring tone.
I am well aware of the mixed results towns like Sneem experience with expats. Christoph Fechler's ability to navigate the differences, and find the humour within, should be an example to expatriate communities the world over. He has a keen eye, sensitivity, and obvious taste for the hidden humour in life. Or rather, humour hidden to those who would sooner demand their due and fight, rather than accept what is, and laugh. I suspect however, there must have been times where he was exasperated by the Larghissimo culture. Yet any such mood in not to be found in his tales. Overall, the book has a happy vibe, and if this is the result of 30 years of interaction, it says a lot for the people of Sneem, and their "Mr. Fletcher"
Mr Fechler wrote the book in his native German. The English translation does well in conveying his keen eye and descriptive style. There are moments where the English seems a bit staid e.g, "What was I thinking of" as opposed to the the vernacular, "what was I thinking." However, there were only a few lines that struck me like that.
Disclaimer. I met Mr. Fechler a few years back. In that meeting he related a couple of the stories first hand. I was excited when I heard he had written a book of them, but disappointed that it was only in German. I'm glad that it is now available in English, especially for the reader who might be considering some long term travel to different cultures.Sunny Spells - Occasional Showers Overview
