Spirits Stars and Spells ReviewCynics, skeptics and non-believers will love this work. Mystics, magicians and psychics will have a lot of trouble with it. What if you fall somewhere in between these two "camps"? Well, then this book may prove worthwhile AND annoying.
As writers, the de Camps are certainly knowledgeable and eloquent. The writing is elegant and lively, though by the end of the book one doesn't exactly come away with the notion that they'd be fun to party with. Who knows?
Hard core materialists and science peddlers, the authors do their best to denounce practically anything that falls in the realm of religion, mysticism and magic. With much erudition and wit, they deftly rip on many charlatans and frauds (though the infamous L. Ron Hubbard is noticeably absent from their scorn - perhaps due to his inclusion in the proper sci-fi cult). We learn that science provides us with intelligence, methodology and validity - that magic is basically for the gullible, confused and primitive.
Vigorous admonitions against getting involved in magic are offered throughout. Additionally, we are provided warnings that pursuit of magic will likely ruin our lives! The authors suggest that exploration of magic led to such catastrophes as the belief in and subsequent persecution of witches. I suppose my love for my cats and for smoking interesting substances are equally futile; I know, I know - they're chemical reactions, baby!
I would contend that vigorous opposition to alternate rituals and rigid adherence to "one approach to living" is what led to the witch panics. I admire the critical eye of the de Camps, though I wonder how Mr. de Camp was able to become such an accomplished science fiction writer with such an apparently narrow mind for magic and imagination.
What we get in this book is accomplished analysis and critique of the supposed merits of magic. Much of this proves illuminating and strangely enriching. However, we miss the exploration of the significant possible (whether or not science can prove it) benefits of magic:
-the ability to harness the powers of the human mind (or at least many of them)
-the ability to attain meditative peacefulness and cognitive harmony (or at least some)
-the ability to reach higher, more enlightened states of mind
-the ability to unravel and evolve beyond the "neural entrapments" of society and religion that have messed many people up
I am not a wholehearted believer in all the powers of magic. Nor do always scoff at overly stoic "materialist-scientific" types. I believe that we have much to benefit from taking a multi-faceted approach to existence. If it works, use it, even if science doesn't have an adequate explanation for it!
In his wonderful book, Condensed Chaos, Phil Hine teaches us that through dabbling in magic we can gain insight and understanding. We can learn to change ourselves and the world we live in.
The key is to not allow just one paradigm to rule us. Let's pick and choose from the rich cornucopia of ideas available to us in this amazing universe. We are to rise to the challenge of harnessing the best the worlds of science, and perhaps various systems of religion and magic, have to offer us. To exclude anything because it has not been proven would lead to a vapid world indeed. Just say know!
