Learn to Spell 500 Words a Day: The Vowel A ReviewI am a third grade teacher and I use all the books by Camilia Sadik in my class. I help my students learn to spell hundreds of words at a time. I recommend this spelling and phonics program to all levels of learners because it works quickly and it saves time. I am surprised why our public schools do not simply use this magnificent program.
Our education system may be complex and I did not have enough time to teach every book in one school year. As a result, I wrote a letter to the parents informing them of Camilia Sadik's program being a breakthrough and that all that the kids needed to learn was to read aloud for the parents-- the kids were then able to learn at home and in class. I am certain that my students, regardless of the level they were in when they started this program, will always be good spellers and readers.Learn to Spell 500 Words a Day: The Vowel A Overview

Dyslexia: Seeing Spells Achieving: Improve your spelling, reading, memory, dyslexic symptoms, in any language, by using your brain the way nature intended, through NLP and visualisation ReviewThe book is reviewed in this month's BDA magazine by leading learning difficulties expert Bernadette McLean from the Helen Arkell Centre.
"Seeing Spells Achieving has been written for those who struggle with words, and those who support them, such as parents or teachers. The writers claim that 100% of dyslexics do not use visualisation to see words. The book teaches visualisation which is a skill that is useful not only for spelling, but also for comprehension. Hickmott and Bendefy are both qualified in Neurolinguistic Programming. Dyslexia specialists have usually heard of the NLP spelling method which is based on how good spellers spell. This method is clearly explained and is a more efficient way of learning spelling than a laborious working through "the minefield of rules and counter rules" of the English language. Exercises to develop visual memory start with objects and then move on to individual words and text. These exercises are well structured and emphasise the same need for practice that any new skill requires before it becomes second nature. The book does more than work on visualisation skills. It uses techniques from NLP to help learners replace self-limiting beliefs with more positive thoughts. Exercises help learners to implement change and to become "unstuck" from feelings of failure and worthlessness about their previous learning. "Seeing Spells Achieving" is suitable for those who support dyslexics because its explanations are much more accessible than its title would indicate. It is particularly appropriate for use with those dyslexics who believe that they will never be able to spell".Dyslexia: Seeing Spells Achieving: Improve your spelling, reading, memory, dyslexic symptoms, in any language, by using your brain the way nature intended, through NLP and visualisation Overview

1001 Commonly Misspelled Words: What Your Spell Checker Won't Tell You ReviewWhen I was in high school, I and a few good friends made a pretty good hobby out of tormenting (in a good way, of course) one particular English teacher in our school.
One of my favorite tactics in this teacher's classroom was to blurt out, in mock consternation, "How do you spell ______?" whenever I couldn't spell a word. Why? Because a) I was young and immature and a legend in my own mind, and b) the teacher always fell right into my trap...
"Look it up in the dictionary!" he'd scream, without fail, pitching me a nice softball right over the plate ...
"But HOW," I whined, "am I supposed to look up a word when I can't spell it in the first place?!"
(GLARING SCOWL)
Problem was, I was only half-kidding with most of my questions (though I'd never admit as much to the teacher). Often it really WAS difficult (not to mention time-consuming) to look up the words I didn't know, especially if their spellings weren't very intuitive.
I guess that's why I'm enjoying my copy of "1,001 Commonly Misspelled Words." With this handy book, you don't need to know how to spell a word already before looking it up. You need only know how to pronounce it -- because you can then look it up phonetically. Why didn't someone think of this before?! Once you get to the word's phonetic spelling, you can then see the correct (though often counterintuitive!) spelling. Plus, you might get a little story about the word or, better yet, some sort of nemonic -- er, I mean mnemonic -- device so that you can remember how to spell it in the future.
I only wish the book included more words. But in any case, it's a nice tool -- especially for a writer type like me. I would think it might also make a good gift for new college students and others who will be tearing their spelling hair out from time to time in the years to come.
Highly recommended!1001 Commonly Misspelled Words: What Your Spell Checker Won't Tell You Overview

If You're So Smart, How Come You Can't Spell Mississippi (Adventures of Everyday Geniuses) ReviewLike one of the other reviewers of this series of books, I found that my dyslexic daughter was not particularly interested in my telling her stories about "famous dyslexics" or in having any kind of dialogue about the issue (she's 8 yrs old). However, she absolutely LOVED these books. They are non-threatening, not too "teachy", and the illustrations are wonderful. My daughter has enjoyed the entire series, but after reading this book in particular, she decided she wanted to go to the library (like the main character)and do some research on dyslexia. This is a huge step!
This is the only book in the series that specifically mentions a term - dyslexia. The other books deal more in generalities--trouble with timed math facts and memorization, poor handwriting and attention deficit. However, I think many children will see themselves in at least one of these stories, and a child like mine may see parts of herself (or himself) in every book. I like the fact that the books are non-specific. They don't spend word space on labels and diagnoses and symptomology. They simply discuss the challenges a child faces in the classroom from a child's point of view. And THAT is what makes them so accessible and wonderful for our kids. I highly, highly recommend this entire series of books for any child with learning differences. If You're So Smart, How Come You Can't Spell Mississippi (Adventures of Everyday Geniuses) Overview
