Miracles in Mark ReviewA sign from heaven? That's the question that opens up Miracles in Mark, this bible-study-ready book that gives insight into what might be our closest account into Jesus' ministry through the eyes of Peter the apostle. Appropriately so as it addresses a common theme that is brought up in the Gospel of Mark: the Pharisees' lack of understanding of what was actually happening before their eyes. Spell's account is appropriately titled, as it hones in almost exclusively on the book of Mark, which is revealed to be the most action packed of the Gospels. Papias, the bishop of Hieropolis from AD 60 to 130, stated "Mark, having become Peter's interpreter, wrote accurately whatever he remembered of what was said or done by the Lord, however not in order." The gospel according to Mark is actually the publication of Peter's dictations written down by Mark. Mark's account was most likely written for the Romans who were a very action-oriented culture, as it is fast-paced, emphasizes more on deeds rather than words, makes use of eye-witness testimony, and does not gloss over people's imperfections. The religious leaders, having seen Jesus work miracles on many occasions did not recognize them for what they were. Many of them believed that he was in allegiance with demons, and these demons were giving him the power to perform these acts. Spell displays a deep understanding of the Gospels, as he holds a PhD in Theology.An excellent read for a new believer, it presents Jesus as a relatable person. It quotes numerous scriptures that show an unpolished and very human Jesus. His blunt rebukes of the Pharisees and his direct commands to his followers are not sugar-coated as in some other accounts. This sifts through the "I'm not tame and docile enough to be with Jesus so I won't even try" ideals that have come to be common for this day and age. It focuses on and portrays Jesus for how He actually reacted in actual situations, rather than so much on words that He spoke and His teachings. This makes it much more applicable to the modern believer as it can be directly applied to our day-to-day interactions. It brings Jesus' interactions into the scope of how people in a modern context commune with one another.
For readers who don't know where to begin with the bible, Spell's concise and organized formula is easy on the eyes and intriguing to follow. He first presents a passage of the bible and then proceeds to analyze it piece by piece, working in examples from his own life as a minister and missionary as well as excerpts from the works of other accomplished authors. This brings forth reflection, so the reader does not simply fly through the chapters without retaining anything.
A fast and easy read, this work is ideal for daily devotional or organized bible study. Dr. Spell effectively drives home his objective in observing and presenting the spiritual truths rather than so much what the writer of the gospel is intending to say. The reader closes and puts down the book with a firm foundation on miracles: some seemingly insignificant until thoroughly examined, and some that we've heard over and over again but haven't seen past the miracle itself into what God is really trying to say. Miracles in Mark is slow and steady build into the greatest miracle of them all: The Resurrection.
