The Magical Tale of Eliza Felding ReviewIn post Katrina New Orleans, young Eliza Felding is suffering from an extreme case of teenage angst. She feels she is plain looking and untalented and also ignored by her family who seem to dote on her better looking more talented sisters. She is put down by her better looking and more athletic classmates and wishes for a better body, intelligence and a good looking boyfriend. In the midst of her misery comes the "Organization" a magical troupe of fellow classmates and mysterious strangers who soon grant her all her wishes, but at a terrible price: she must abuse and mistreat her own sisters and friends as ordered by the Organization. Soon she realizes the difference between right and wrong and selfishness and unselfishness, and begins to fight the Organization with the help of some of her friends who also fell under its odious spell. The result is some humungous battles that employ potent magical spells that would put
Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings to shame.
Eventually Eliza realizes that good triumphs over evil and that physical attractiveness and talent are not what is truly important in life.
In addition to the fantasy aspect of this book, it is a good moral lesson to remind teens that the best thing to reach for in life is true friendship and giving to others and that beauty is only skin deeep.
This is Douglas second fantasy novel, following in the footsteps of " The Secret of the Dogs" and as in that first book, he displays a fertile imagination that results in impressive (and sometimes gory) battle sequences, unique characters and a good descriptive narrative. Although there is an overabundance of adjectives, you are treated to a unique tale of fantasy in that most unique of cities, New Orleans. If fantasy books about teens that teach a good moral lesson are your thing, I would strongly recommend "The Magical Tale of Eliza Felding" by Rich Douglas.
