Wandlore: The Art of Crafting the Ultimate Magical Tool ReviewI was really! looking forward to the arrival of this book, and was so delighted that it's release date came up earlier than expected! I received it just a day or so ago, so of course, I'm still in the process of my first run through. However! I'm well enough into it at this point to write a review...and my 'ultimate' compliment?? The book has quickly acquired quite! a bit of enthusiastic underlining and annotation, something I only do when I'm quite sure I WON'T be re-selling a book: This one will absolutely have a place in my library as a 'Keeper'. :-) I'm thoroughly enjoying Alferian's clear and informative writing style, excellent scholarship, as well as the inclusion of some of his personal experiences relating to this deeply magickal craft.
I haven't as yet read in depth the section about the more mundane skills of carving the wands, but have made a scanning of that section (meaning, I haven't underlined it yet!).. which assures me that the practical information about the use of tools, etc., is more than adequate for the ambitious new wand-maker to get started. (I've already got my eye out for windfall..)
I may as well confess, too, that I've been a fan of Alferian's for quite some time, as I'm the owner of two of his beautifully crafted wands, a Hazel and a Hawthorn, both of which are beautifully carved and crafted...And both of which have proved to be quite Alive in the sense that the Dryads of both were fully awake when I received them. Both my wands are quite the MOST magickal tools I have ever had the honor of partnering with in my craft as a Witch.
In the case of the Hawthorn wand..I decided, as a beginning project, to Send healing energy to a much loved 'elderly' and ailing houseplant.. And upon the 'swish and flick' (!!) portion of my effort, a MOST magickal thing happened, and a first for me: I was privileged to Hear a Song from the Dryad! It was quite the most beautiful thing I've ever heard, and so elusive in the way of Faery, gone in seconds, but leaving a feeling of deep enchantment in the air..

I consider both my "MacLir Wands" to be Teachers as well as partners...and Alferian's book to be a deeply spiritually instructional work regarding the mysteries...and practicalities...of connecting with the subtle worlds of Nature. I can't wait! for his next book that will hopefully focus on more of his personal experiences interacting with 'The Other Crowd'! I'm sure I'll learn a lot! Thanks so much for THIS book, Alferian..but get busy on the next! Right now, no excuses!Wandlore: The Art of Crafting the Ultimate Magical Tool Overview
