Magic of the Celtic Otherworld: Irish History, Lore & Rituals (Llewellyn's Celtic Wisdom) ReviewPreviously published as "Glamoury", this book is a surprising publication since it comes from Llywelyn (who does not have a stellar reputation in regards to scholarship). As well as lore and history, Blamires presents some wonderful visualization exercise which are downright shamanic. There is a good overview of some of the beings you may meet in the Otherworld though I feel he is too cautious in recommending that you not work with some of them (I believe you can be prepared to face anything as long as you have acquainted yourself with your own Shadow Self) . The somewhat hermetic rituals are also group focused and will take a little time for deconstruction for the dedicated solitary. It's already getting attention, earning a Psyche Award Nomination. Considering she is coming off the USA Today best-selling book the Immortals: The Awakening (a series with fellow authors Robin T. Popp and Jennifer Ashley) Deep Magic only reinforces what a talented author Nash is.
In this tale, the Druids have long suffered persecution at the hands of the Romans. Using the magical mists to shield Avalon, they have hidden there in safety. Only that idyllic life is threatened by a Roman sorcerer, a young rogue solider who has the powers to penetrate the protective mists. It falls to Gwendolyn to save Avalon, in her role of Avalon Guardian. Gwendolyn must use everything to protect Avalon, even powers she has been forbidden to call in her quest to discover the enemy. She is a shapeshifter, a wolf, but this side of her nature she cannot control. Marcus Aquila, is a Roman blacksmith. The handsome man who once saved Gwendolyn's life, and now has earned her love. He hides her, protects her, and with her magic he is able to forge a sword on par with Excalibur. Only the wolf side of her nature threatens their love, even threatens Avalon.
The story is strong, pulling the readers into the magical world Nash has fashioned. Her world-building allows the reader to walk into this dark age period, giving you strong history, lore and myth skillfully mixed and conjured to satisfy.

The Forbidden Circle: The Spell Sword / The Forbidden Tower ReviewPutting together -The Spell Sword- and -The Forbidden Tower- was a great idea, & this edition fills the bill. This classic entry in the saga of Darkover -- a lost [in time as well as space] colony of Humans who interbred with the alien cheryi, evolved into a feudal society with the addition of "magic" as laran psi-powers, then were rediscovered by humans from Earth [Terrans] -- is an especially good 'textbook' for people learning to use their own inner strengths.
Watching the almost-typical fairytale romance of Keeper Callista Lanart and Terran spacer Andrew Carr bloom into something else is magical in the best sense of the word. Damon Ridenow -- outcast from his beloved Arilinn Tower because he's actually more than just a Matrix technician -- and his love Ellemir [sister to Callista] are not just pretty people filling a need for extra faces in -The Spell Sword-. The four craft a friendship that becomes more than just friendship ... and will have a crucial effect on Darkovan history.
The action really kicks in as the tale progresses in -The Forbidden Tower-. Callista discovers -- painfully -- that the heritage she thought she had left behind as virginal Keeper of Arilinn Tower is almost more than she can bear to shatter [the fact that it nearly kills Andrew isn't just peripheral, either]. Ellimir discovers that she actually is gifted with the power of laran, and Damon takes centre stage as he discovers that he is a Keeper himself ... Keeper of what leronis Leonie Hastur scornfully calls "the Forbidden Tower". As the four individuals become more than just two married couples, they uncover vital knowledge lost in the millenia known as the Ages of Chaos.
The tragic denoument is kept away, which perhaps is just as well. If you truly want to be depressed, pick up -The Bloody Sun- to learn the fates of the four and their children. Although not quite as tragic as the hinted ending of another group of similar people, hinted at in -Sharra's Exile-, it can be a true 'downer' after the triumphant ending of -The Forbidden Tower-.
At least the knowledge is kept, however. It seems that no one can truly vanquish Varzil the Good! Although even *that* might be up for re-examination with -The Fall of Neskaya-...The Forbidden Circle: The Spell Sword / The Forbidden Tower Overview

Spells (Aprilynne Pike) ReviewI was looking for a quick, escapist read a few weeks ago and picked up "Wings." I had heard great things about it, and while it wasn't quite as amazing as everyone had said, it was enjoyable. I was intrigued enough by the character Tamani to want to find out more.
"Spells" was a decent read. I debated between 3 and 4 stars, and decided on 4 stars because of Tamani. Girls, say it with me: "TEAM TAMANI ALL THE WAY." "Spells" wore a little thin in a few parts, and here's why: Laurel cries. A lot. Laurel is needy. A lot. Laurel and David make out. A lot. Honestly, it felt like every few pages Laurel and David were making out, and it got pretty nauseating after awhile. I liked David just fine after reading "Wings," but after "Spells," I don't know how anyone could be Team David. All of the Laurel/David chemistry from "Wings" vanished, so every time they spewed lovey words and kissed, it felt really strange and forced. I like a good romance as much as the next girl, but I was SO tired of the make out sessions by the end of the book. I have hope that making David annoying in this book is all part of a big plan to eventually bring Laurel and Tamani together. I don't know how ANYONE could be cheering for David at this point.
And poor Tamani. Laurel's treatment of him was completely appalling. She toyed with him and strung him along to the point where I really couldn't stand her by the end. Let's hope Laurel was acting like this so we can see the process of her maturing and growing as a character in later books. Go Shar for finally putting Laurel in her place regarding her deplorable treatment of Tamani. Poor Tamani seemed a little defeated for a lot of the book, as he wasn't quite as confident and flirtatious as he is in "Wings." Pining for Laurel is just sucking the soul out of his character. Let's hope he comes back as his charismatic, charming self in Book 3 because I'm weary of selfish Laurel using him and bringing him down!
And the conclusion? Anyone who's read the book knows what I'm talking about. I kind of felt like how I did when I read "Little Women" for the first time and literally threw the book against the wall when Jo refused Laurie. At least there will be two more books for Laurel to mature and make the right choice.
I have faith in you, Aprilynne Pike, that you'll eventually give us readers the conclusion we're all cheering for. I understand that there are two books after this one so you can't exactly resolve the love triangle just yet. All I'm asking is that eventually Laurel will grow up and be with Tamani, and please give us at least one book where she and Tamani are happily together (conflict is okay...just let them face it together). Don't pull a Jane Austen (my favorite author) and make me read 400 pages waiting for the two character to get together, and then I only get to relish five pages where they're finally happy.Spells (Aprilynne Pike) Overview
