ALL ABOARD, STUDENT EDITION, SING SPELL READ AND WRITE, SECOND EDITION ReviewI got the combo pack with everything for my 5 year old. We have been doing the program for a few months now and are on the 3rd book. I am now getting another All Aboard and On track because my 3 year old told me he could read and wanted to do school. I said ok read me this book. ( one from the set) he sat down and started working out the words. I was amazed he has leared so much from the songs and just by watching his brother learn. Don't hesitate go get the combo pack with it all and you will love it. The songs are great and my kids love it. Then come back and get another workbook for your other children because you will be so encouraged.ALL ABOARD, STUDENT EDITION, SING SPELL READ AND WRITE, SECOND EDITION Overview

Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Level 1 Kit ReviewI first started teaching my 4-year-old daughter how to read using "How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." It bored her (literally) to tears. The lessons were redundant, and the text-specific characters confused her (she had already learned all of the letters and their sounds long before). I found the negative psychology advocated by the scripts quite disturbing. The pace was slow and restrictive.
So, following my child's lead, I looked for a new curriculum. We went to the other end of the spectrum, and tried Bob Books and some Scholastic sight word readers for a while, but that just wasn't systematic enough for us to keep at it. DD likes structure, but also needs plenty of variety to keep it interesting.
A friend told us about Sing, Spell, Read, & Write and showed me the materials. I was initially impressed with the workbook activities and the progress chart, as well as the musical portion of the curriculum. (Although the songs are VERY cheesy, they are VERY easy to remember and thus VERY effective.)
Upon getting our own set, I realized my daughter had already outstripped the Kindergarten portion of the curriculum (but that's OK -- we'll use them with daughter #2 in a couple of years), so we started in the Level 1 workbook, eliminating or greatly reducing the amount of writing she had to do (one challenge of working with a young child who is ready to read is that her reading & comprehension can easily outpace her motor skills & writing ability). It's extremely easy to adapt the activities to have her "draw a line" to the correct letters rather than write them in herself.
I am continually impressed with how much fun we have with this curriculum. Each day's work includes songs and games (go-fish & Bingo games that review and reinforce what she's learning), some reading (there is a nice collection of readers and some booklets that they actually fold, staple, and color themselves!, a daily spelling test (around the 2nd month into it), and grammar instruction (on skills like punctuation, alphabetizing, sentence parsing, and syllabication!). There are also periodic assessments that help introduce your child to test-taking skills (including filling in the bubbles). I realize that homeschoolers may not be as concerned with enhancing their kids' ability to take tests, but I like that it's in there, so that when and if she ever *does* have to take a standardized test, she'll be very familiar with the format & procedures. I am *so* impressed with the thoroughness of this curriculum!!
I wouldn't say that this curriculum is for everyone, though. It is very much a pre-packaged program, and doesn't include any "living" books (we read plenty of those on the side, though). The music may just be too much for some parents to take. Some children may find the workbook pages tiresome (but I think they are fairly well-balanced -- 4-10 "problems" per page).
I think the things that I appreciate most about this curriculum are:
Thoroughness -- I really feel like we're covering ALL of the Language Arts bases, including Reading, Spelling, Writing, and Grammar (and Testing!).
Ease of Use -- There are scripts, lists of what materials will be used & what songs will be played, and step-by-step instructions for each lesson, as well as how many days should be allotted for each "step." I can literally sit down with my daughter, glance at the instructor's manual (or not!), and get started. A little pre-planning (like gathering the books & materials you'll need) helps optimize the lesson, but even without extra preparation it's a cinch.
Variety of Activities -- This program is *so* much more than readers and workbook exercises. My child does enjoy the workbook activities. The readers are colorful and substantial (so that she really feels as if she's accomplished something when she finishes one). The music is a wonderful technique for assisting memorization. Even spelling tests and occasional "chalkboard" lessons help mix things up for us!
Fun! -- The games are a wonderful touch. My daughter (like many children around her age, I gather) is extremely into playing games of any kind, so they are a reward in and of themselves!Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Level 1 Kit Overview

Spell to Write And Read / Core Kit - Teacher's Edition ReviewThe SWR Core Kit listed here includes: Spell to Write and Read which is the overall teachers manual to the, WISE Guide for Spelling, Phonogram Cards and Spelling Rule Cards, Phonogram CD. If purchased separately, the five items in the SWR Core Kit would be $100. You save by buying them together and only pay $98 for the SWR Core Kit.
The set of books in the SWR Core Kit can teach up to college level spelling for all the children in your family or school. The only thing you need to purchase each year is a Learning Log (spelling note book) where the kids write their words.
I use Spell to Write and Read with all my children. I have home schooled my seven children for 9 years now and Spell to Write and Read (SWR) by Wanda Sanseri is the best and most significant program I have ever used to teach my children to spell, read, and write. I would never go back to my old ways of teaching.

In our first year with SWR all four of my boys made great strides in reading and spelling. My 6 and 7 years old boys jumped up by two grade levels in spelling. Their improvement in reading was dramatic. After only one year with SWR my 6 and 7 year old sons were able to read 4th grade level books with ease. This year they are now 7 and 8 years old and able to read a 180 page chapter book, such as the Childhood of Famous American series, in only 4 days! For a 180 chapter book I break the reading sessions down to: 23 pages in the morning and 22 pages in the afternoon. They are very normal sword fighting, tree climbing boy, and now with SWR also great readers!

My oldest two boys, ages 11 and 14 jumped up by four and five grade levels in one year with SWR as measured by the spelling diagnostic test. Though my 11 and 14 year old sons were good readers by the time they started with SWR, they needed work in spelling. I found out the hard way that good readers are not always good spellers! In our second year with SWR and the older boys were 12 and 15. They tested at 11.7 grade level on the spelling diagnostic test by the end of the year. This is truly excellent and we are all pleased!

It is our third year with SWR and the younger set of boys are now 8 and 9 years old. By local school enrollment law and practice they would be in 2nd and 3rd grade and they just tested at 6.0 and 6.4 grade level on the spelling diagnostic! You can bet I am mighty satisfied with SWR!

Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Kindergarten Level 1 Combo Kit ReviewI am a homeschooler and think this is the best product available for teaching phonics and reading. I first heard about SSR&W when I began homeschooling back in 1993. I wanted to use it, but didn't want to spend so much $$$. So I used HomeRun Reading instead. It looked like a lot of fun and my son enjoyed it, but he didn't really retain any of the material, and didn't learn to read.
When my twin daughters were ready to learn to read, I looked around for another program. Every other homeschooler I talked to used SSR&W, so I decided to bite the bullet and spend the money. I figured I would only have to spend the money once, since I would only have to buy workbooks for my younger children.
So I bought SSR&W and I couldn't believe how much my kids liked the program, how easy it was to use, and how quickly and well my children learned to read. I re-taught my son along with my girls, and they learned to read together.
A couple of years later, son #2 was ready to read, and when I went to the homeschool store, I found out that I could no longer purchase replacement workbooks. Apparently the company had been sold and they had changed their policy of selling to homeschoolers. I was extremely disappointed. I ended up buying Saxon Phonics, which got the job done, but I found it very repetitive and boring. I used Saxon with child #5, also.
For child #6, I switched to Bob Jones Phonics. I quit after a month because it was just unworkable in the homeschool setting, in my opinion. (I will say I love BJ's math textbooks.)
Imagine my surprise when I was surfing the 'net for phonics recommendations and found out that SSR&W was again available to homeschoolers and I could buy it from Amazon. Since I had sold, given away and/or lost all the SSR&W materials I bought back in 1996, I had to re-buy the whole thing, but I was happy to do so if it means that my youngest four children will learn to read with this wonderful program.
Now down to the details of the program. With this Combo set you receive the following:
- Four consumable workbooks (2 Kindergarten, 2 First grade)
- Instructor's guide
- Set of 6 cassettes AND a CD with all the phonics songs
- Laminated Raceway chart
- Laminated alphabet chart
- Pen and eraser to use on charts
- Set of 17 readers
- Three sets of bingo-like phonics games
- Two decks of phonics game cards
- Treasure Box of rewards
Everything comes in a sturdy storage box. It was really fun to open the box and see all the familiar books and accessories, only updated with better illustrations and higher quality materials.
I have started my 6 year old daughter on the "Off We Go" book and my 4 year old son on "All Aboard". They are making great progress and are really enjoying it.
I don't plan on ever using another phonics program, and can't recommend Sing Spell Read and Write highly enough to anyone who wants to teach their children to read.Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Kindergarten Level 1 Combo Kit Overview

1001 Commonly Misspelled Words: What Your Spell Checker Won't Tell You ReviewWhen I was in high school, I and a few good friends made a pretty good hobby out of tormenting (in a good way, of course) one particular English teacher in our school.
One of my favorite tactics in this teacher's classroom was to blurt out, in mock consternation, "How do you spell ______?" whenever I couldn't spell a word. Why? Because a) I was young and immature and a legend in my own mind, and b) the teacher always fell right into my trap...
"Look it up in the dictionary!" he'd scream, without fail, pitching me a nice softball right over the plate ...
"But HOW," I whined, "am I supposed to look up a word when I can't spell it in the first place?!"
(GLARING SCOWL)
Problem was, I was only half-kidding with most of my questions (though I'd never admit as much to the teacher). Often it really WAS difficult (not to mention time-consuming) to look up the words I didn't know, especially if their spellings weren't very intuitive.
I guess that's why I'm enjoying my copy of "1,001 Commonly Misspelled Words." With this handy book, you don't need to know how to spell a word already before looking it up. You need only know how to pronounce it -- because you can then look it up phonetically. Why didn't someone think of this before?! Once you get to the word's phonetic spelling, you can then see the correct (though often counterintuitive!) spelling. Plus, you might get a little story about the word or, better yet, some sort of nemonic -- er, I mean mnemonic -- device so that you can remember how to spell it in the future.
I only wish the book included more words. But in any case, it's a nice tool -- especially for a writer type like me. I would think it might also make a good gift for new college students and others who will be tearing their spelling hair out from time to time in the years to come.
Highly recommended!1001 Commonly Misspelled Words: What Your Spell Checker Won't Tell You Overview
