ALL ABOARD, STUDENT EDITION, SING SPELL READ AND WRITE, SECOND EDITION ReviewI got the combo pack with everything for my 5 year old. We have been doing the program for a few months now and are on the 3rd book. I am now getting another All Aboard and On track because my 3 year old told me he could read and wanted to do school. I said ok read me this book. ( one from the set) he sat down and started working out the words. I was amazed he has leared so much from the songs and just by watching his brother learn. Don't hesitate go get the combo pack with it all and you will love it. The songs are great and my kids love it. Then come back and get another workbook for your other children because you will be so encouraged.ALL ABOARD, STUDENT EDITION, SING SPELL READ AND WRITE, SECOND EDITION Overview

Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Level 1 Kit ReviewI first started teaching my 4-year-old daughter how to read using "How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." It bored her (literally) to tears. The lessons were redundant, and the text-specific characters confused her (she had already learned all of the letters and their sounds long before). I found the negative psychology advocated by the scripts quite disturbing. The pace was slow and restrictive.
So, following my child's lead, I looked for a new curriculum. We went to the other end of the spectrum, and tried Bob Books and some Scholastic sight word readers for a while, but that just wasn't systematic enough for us to keep at it. DD likes structure, but also needs plenty of variety to keep it interesting.
A friend told us about Sing, Spell, Read, & Write and showed me the materials. I was initially impressed with the workbook activities and the progress chart, as well as the musical portion of the curriculum. (Although the songs are VERY cheesy, they are VERY easy to remember and thus VERY effective.)
Upon getting our own set, I realized my daughter had already outstripped the Kindergarten portion of the curriculum (but that's OK -- we'll use them with daughter #2 in a couple of years), so we started in the Level 1 workbook, eliminating or greatly reducing the amount of writing she had to do (one challenge of working with a young child who is ready to read is that her reading & comprehension can easily outpace her motor skills & writing ability). It's extremely easy to adapt the activities to have her "draw a line" to the correct letters rather than write them in herself.
I am continually impressed with how much fun we have with this curriculum. Each day's work includes songs and games (go-fish & Bingo games that review and reinforce what she's learning), some reading (there is a nice collection of readers and some booklets that they actually fold, staple, and color themselves!, a daily spelling test (around the 2nd month into it), and grammar instruction (on skills like punctuation, alphabetizing, sentence parsing, and syllabication!). There are also periodic assessments that help introduce your child to test-taking skills (including filling in the bubbles). I realize that homeschoolers may not be as concerned with enhancing their kids' ability to take tests, but I like that it's in there, so that when and if she ever *does* have to take a standardized test, she'll be very familiar with the format & procedures. I am *so* impressed with the thoroughness of this curriculum!!
I wouldn't say that this curriculum is for everyone, though. It is very much a pre-packaged program, and doesn't include any "living" books (we read plenty of those on the side, though). The music may just be too much for some parents to take. Some children may find the workbook pages tiresome (but I think they are fairly well-balanced -- 4-10 "problems" per page).
I think the things that I appreciate most about this curriculum are:
Thoroughness -- I really feel like we're covering ALL of the Language Arts bases, including Reading, Spelling, Writing, and Grammar (and Testing!).
Ease of Use -- There are scripts, lists of what materials will be used & what songs will be played, and step-by-step instructions for each lesson, as well as how many days should be allotted for each "step." I can literally sit down with my daughter, glance at the instructor's manual (or not!), and get started. A little pre-planning (like gathering the books & materials you'll need) helps optimize the lesson, but even without extra preparation it's a cinch.
Variety of Activities -- This program is *so* much more than readers and workbook exercises. My child does enjoy the workbook activities. The readers are colorful and substantial (so that she really feels as if she's accomplished something when she finishes one). The music is a wonderful technique for assisting memorization. Even spelling tests and occasional "chalkboard" lessons help mix things up for us!
Fun! -- The games are a wonderful touch. My daughter (like many children around her age, I gather) is extremely into playing games of any kind, so they are a reward in and of themselves!Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Level 1 Kit Overview

Sing, Spell, Read and Write : PreK Readiness Program ReviewI bought this program for a 4 year old. I had previously, although many years ago, used the Kindergarten program with much success. The PreK program teaches colors, shapes and alphabet sounds vs. the Kindergarten/Level 1 program which focuses on short vowel and alphabet sounds. The PreK program has a CD which has songs that correlate with the colors and shapes. For the alphabet sounds-the songs are all on audiotapes(which is rather outdated; individual A-Z alphabet cards; a alphabet chart (both which correlate with the phonics songs on audiotape). I'd prefer if the alphabet sound songs were on CD and available for purchase separately, which actually prepares a more advanced child. The PreK program comes with many alphabet pages that help in practicing the main sound by allowing the child to say the sound and circle the appropriate pictures which begin with that sound. These I found to be very helpful. It also offers stickers as positive reinforcements/rewards.Sing, Spell, Read and Write : PreK Readiness Program Overview

A Knife and a Fork and a Bottle and a Cork: That's How You Spell New York (Riddle Rhyme Trilogy) Review"A Knife and a Fork and a Bottle and a Cork...That's how you spell New York! Discover the 50 States Through Riddle -Rhymes" is a fabulous collection of Riddle Rhymes that lead the reader to spell the names of all 50 states, one by one. Using creative connections that encourage young reader-detectives to "hear" the magic spelling encoded ion each joyous riddle -rhyme. The process of unlocking the Riddle Rhyme stimulates artistic centers in their minds/ brains, which are becoming increasingly devalued in favor of more formal abstract learning methods. The Riddle Rhymes also are a fun travel activity, stimulating interest in geography as well as actual spelling. Riddle -Rhymes work for personal of all ages, in different ways. Author Schrager says, "Every person, and every group brings something different to the activity. They become a kind of mirror of our thought processes and our emotions." The black and white humorous illustrations of Sarah Madsen add to the brain-twister tease effect of the Riddle Rhymes. In addition to 50 Riddle -Rhymes for 50 states, there are a list of states with capitals and name origins at the end of the book, along with some suggestions for Body Geography, a list of one fact per state, and a list of states by heart, to help memorize the 50 states in alphabetical order. "A Knife and a Fork and a Bottle and a Cork..." is the new poetry out loud approach to learning, which is tons of fun as well as educational!

Skill Sharpeners Spell & Write, Grade 2 ReviewI bought Spell&Write before I bought Building Spelling Skills, mainly because it is in color and the other isn't (they are both by Evan Moor Publishing). I ended up using Building Spelling Skills instead because it has more spelling drills and practice with the spelling words in a more focused way than Spell&Write. The Spell&Write book includes a lot of grammar lessons and strays from the spelling word lists. It could be a good supplement but it wasn't for my family. My son needs a bit of drilling in each subject and Spell&Write wasn't giving enough practice in the myriad of things it tries to touch on. I also supplemented Building Spelling Skills with Flash Kids Spelling Skills by Harcourt for its color and spelling drills (drilling can be boring but best way to study some things, and color illustrations helps to break up monotony).Skill Sharpeners Spell & Write, Grade 2 Overview

Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Kindergarten Level 1 Combo Kit ReviewI am a homeschooler and think this is the best product available for teaching phonics and reading. I first heard about SSR&W when I began homeschooling back in 1993. I wanted to use it, but didn't want to spend so much $$$. So I used HomeRun Reading instead. It looked like a lot of fun and my son enjoyed it, but he didn't really retain any of the material, and didn't learn to read.
When my twin daughters were ready to learn to read, I looked around for another program. Every other homeschooler I talked to used SSR&W, so I decided to bite the bullet and spend the money. I figured I would only have to spend the money once, since I would only have to buy workbooks for my younger children.
So I bought SSR&W and I couldn't believe how much my kids liked the program, how easy it was to use, and how quickly and well my children learned to read. I re-taught my son along with my girls, and they learned to read together.
A couple of years later, son #2 was ready to read, and when I went to the homeschool store, I found out that I could no longer purchase replacement workbooks. Apparently the company had been sold and they had changed their policy of selling to homeschoolers. I was extremely disappointed. I ended up buying Saxon Phonics, which got the job done, but I found it very repetitive and boring. I used Saxon with child #5, also.
For child #6, I switched to Bob Jones Phonics. I quit after a month because it was just unworkable in the homeschool setting, in my opinion. (I will say I love BJ's math textbooks.)
Imagine my surprise when I was surfing the 'net for phonics recommendations and found out that SSR&W was again available to homeschoolers and I could buy it from Amazon. Since I had sold, given away and/or lost all the SSR&W materials I bought back in 1996, I had to re-buy the whole thing, but I was happy to do so if it means that my youngest four children will learn to read with this wonderful program.
Now down to the details of the program. With this Combo set you receive the following:
- Four consumable workbooks (2 Kindergarten, 2 First grade)
- Instructor's guide
- Set of 6 cassettes AND a CD with all the phonics songs
- Laminated Raceway chart
- Laminated alphabet chart
- Pen and eraser to use on charts
- Set of 17 readers
- Three sets of bingo-like phonics games
- Two decks of phonics game cards
- Treasure Box of rewards
Everything comes in a sturdy storage box. It was really fun to open the box and see all the familiar books and accessories, only updated with better illustrations and higher quality materials.
I have started my 6 year old daughter on the "Off We Go" book and my 4 year old son on "All Aboard". They are making great progress and are really enjoying it.
I don't plan on ever using another phonics program, and can't recommend Sing Spell Read and Write highly enough to anyone who wants to teach their children to read.Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Kindergarten Level 1 Combo Kit Overview

Spell to Write and Read: A Step by Step Guide to Foundational Language Arts ReviewWanda Sanseri has written Spell to Write and Read along with its companion book, The Wise Guide for Spelling as a homeschooler-friendly guide to using the highly effective Spalding method to teach early language arts.
Spell to Write and Read is a how-to book for the teacher with detailed lesson plans for each step along the way. It is not a day by day lesson plan book, but the Wise Guide for Spelling gives spelling words with sentences for the teacher to use if she wishes and detailed instructions on how to teach each word, including how to mark each word to show each of the five types of silent final E, reinforcement of important spelling rules, multi-letter phonogram, and "think to spell" ideas.
One feature I appreciate is the way I can adapt this program to suit my children's readiness for each step. Each year begins with a diagnostic test to determine where in the Wise Guide to Spelling to begin. Then you proceed at a pace of 10 to 40 words, depending on ability, with the program as written.
Wanda's program is very flexible and not every idea for enrichment activities is meant to be used each time you teach the particular spelling list, but since this is "spiral" learning the enrichment ideas are various methods to reinforce phonograms, spelling rules, "think to spell" concepts and grammatical rules over and over until they are truly ingrained in both teacher and student.
Just recently spelling "clicked" for my son after much struggle and he is overjoyed and confident that the words I dictate to him he can usually spell without much extra teaching on my part. Don't be lulled into thinking that every child will learn to spell well just from reading alone. Certain concepts need to be taught. Wanda gives the tools to teach like a master teacher
These two books (Wise Guide to Spelling and Spell to Write and Read) provide a wealth of ideas to introduce grammar principles along with each week's spelling words, preliminary activities to prepare for each week's words, charts which are built by the teacher and student together to illustrate spelling rules and the various sounds of each of the 70 phonograms taught.
Be sure to order to phonogram cards and spelling rule cards. These are necessary teaching aids. For support in using Wanda's materials you can subscribe to the yahoogroup TeachingReadingHome and/or find a teacher training seminar near you at her website, http://www.bhibooks.org.
If you are not in a race to have your child reading before he is writing and spelling short words as he learns to read them, then this program is well worth the dollars and time spent.Spell to Write and Read: A Step by Step Guide to Foundational Language Arts Overview
