Spell Well (Grades 4-8) ReviewI teach fifth grade, and my students get so tired of the same old spelling activities. Then I discovered this book. The activities are fun and creative. There is something for everyone.
One of my students favorite activities was the map. In this activity the student's created a map of a state and use their spelling words to name the places. Then I was able to use the social studies skills by having them add to their maps geo features, and math when they measured the distance between cities and created a map key.
Another favorite activity was the comic strip. I had a boy in my class who hated to write, but loved to draw. He created some of the funniest comic strips and went far beyond what I asked him to do.
Then it worked so well with my students who are on different spelling lists. Whether they were on a higher or lower list of words everyone could do the same activity.
I sure hope these authors come up with more activities, because I'll be interested in seeing them!Spell Well (Grades 4-8) Overview

The Spelling Book: Teaching Children How to Spell, Not What to Spell ReviewI bought this book for a grad. class for Reading Specialists. It is an amazing resource for anyone who teaches spelling. It explains why we need to teach children HOW to spell (giving them strategies and skill in spelling) rather than having them memorize a word list every week. The theory is well explained and makes great sense! The strategies given are easily applicable to any classroom. If you are looking to get away from spelling lists and move to individualized spelling this book will effectively guide your transition. The Spelling Book: Teaching Children How to Spell, Not What to Spell Overview

Miss Pell Would Never Misspell and Other Painless Tricks for Memorizing How to Spell and Use Wily Words (Adventures in Memory) ReviewSometimes certain spelling words can be mighty tricky, but if you pay careful attention to some of the hints in this book, you might just have an easier time remembering some of them. One way many people learn how to spell words or remember facts is by using mnemonics. A mnemonic is "a fancy word given to little tricks or devices that help us remember important facts." Some devices actually make up a word by using the first letters of the word we are trying to remember. For example when you are trying to remember the names of the great lakes you'll have an easier time if you can remember the word "HOMES."
Learning to visualize pictures can also help you remember a word or words. In this book hopefully you will be able to utilize some of these little "tricks" or discover your own unique way of remembering things. There are two "Spell It Right" sections, A-M and N-Z, that present some very tricky words. For example, when you want to spell the compound word "background," it just might "be easier if you remember that it's a combination of two words." It isn't backround! There's the visual of a dog with highlighted words pointing to his back and to the ground to keep in your mind's eye when you have to spell background.
Of course if you think about the word "misspell," you only need to think about Miss Pell, because "She would never misspell `misspell.'" You'll also learn about how to use certain words that many kids think are one: a lot, all right, and no one. Do you know when to use the words fewer and less? There are a couple of easy ways you can remember how to use in order to figure it out. You'll also learn about many homophones, "words that are pronounced the same but have different spellings and different meanings." Do you know when and how to use the words capital and capitol? You will when you've finished reading this book!
This book presents a fun and easy way to learn to use an assortment of devices to learn to spell difficult words. One of the most striking things about this book is the zany artwork that provides a stepping stone for the visually oriented student to work with. For example, when providing a few tricks to learn how to spell the word "roommate," there is a picture of two roomies sitting on a couch, each with the letter M on their shirts (MM). There are many words included in the first two sections that often stump grownups as well. License, rhythm, dessert, and potatoes are among them. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This would be an excellent kid reference to add to any classroom, homeschool, or library shelves!

How To Spell It ReviewI am a fourth grade teacher and have used this book in my classroom and recommend it to all my parents for home use. A dictionary doesn't help kids spell. They just get frustrated and never find the word. Using phonetic spelling, this book ACTUALLY helps kids find the correct spelling. Kids fight over these books in my classroom. Great if you want to stop answering those same old "How do you spell ______? questions. How To Spell It Overview

The Clear and Simple How to Spell It: A Handbook of Commonly Misspelled Words ReviewMy child finds this book hard to use. He looks up the word how he thinks it will be spelled and many of the times the way he has mispelled it isn't listed in the book. There are 3 columns on a page (too many) and the last column is squished which makes it difficult to read. It isn't setup like a dictionary where the first word and last word are listed at the top of the page so the reader knows how to quickly find page the word is on.The Clear and Simple How to Spell It: A Handbook of Commonly Misspelled Words Overview

My Kid Can't Spell: Understanding and Assisting Your Child's Literacy Development ReviewBy middle school if you have a child making numerous spelling mistakes, the reality is that all the spelling lists in the world won't help. Begin checking with family members and you will find a genetic component. This book helps you better understand this disability and gives great suggestions like the use of the Franklin Spell Checker and of course using the spell check on the computer.
It would be better helping your child become proficient on the key board rather than drilling spell lists. My Kid Can't Spell: Understanding and Assisting Your Child's Literacy Development Overview

How to Spell Like a Champ ReviewBefore I review this book, I should tell you my story--a story of spelling. I am a 13-year-old 8th grade girl who was in the hospital twice in the 7th Grade, sick with migraines for seven months and out of school for almost the whole year. Just when I thought I could go back to school in September for 8th grade, I got sick again in October and was out until the end of November. The week I came back, my teacher lined up the smartest students in the class to spell words they were studying. Since I had missed all the spelling tests, I was not one of them.
I knew that I used to be a good speller when I did go to school regularly and I always read a lot, even when I was really sick and I had to resort to audio books. So, I asked my teacher if I could participate. He nodded and in that spelling bee, I spelled as if I had never missed a day of school. Can you believe I tied as top speller in my class along with my twin sister, the #1 ranked student in the school? Since I was a winner, the next week, I found myself on stage in front of my whole school anxiously waiting for words with 11 other children hoping to win and represent our school in the District spelling bee.
After a few rounds, because of my studying (and a little bit of luck) I survived to be one of the 5 finalists. My twin sister stood up next and was asked to spell "bureaucracy". She spelled it incorrectly and walked off the stage --- 4 remained. One after the other, student tripped up on hard words that the teachers were throwing at the students. There were two left. I was one of them. One would be the champ of the school spelling bee. The 7th grader had to spell "nemesis" in order to win. Instead, she spelled it "nemisis". She had tripped up, but I knew the word! I happily spelled it "n-e-m-e-s-i-s", and in an instant, I had won my school bee. I was going to the District Bee! Since then, I have been training for the spelling bee with my coach (my mom) and reading "How to Spell Like a Champ".
"How to Spell Like a Champ" is one of the most informative books I have read. It teaches you about root words; Latin, Greek, Italian, French and Spanish based words. I am enjoying it, soaking up info like a sponge. It gives tips about how to study correctly, how to relax before the big day, and puzzles and crosswords with some words you might find in bees. The CD that comes with the book takes you on the journey of a spelling bee winner and made me more comfortable about the things I might encounter when I compete.
You know how serious basketball players sleep with their basketball and football players sleep with their football? Don't laugh, but I sleep with How to Spell Like a Champ under my pillow.
I suggest if you are going to a spelling bee --- whether it's a class, District, Regional or the National Bee --- get the book. You will be glad you did when you spell a word like "xanthosis"!How to Spell Like a Champ Overview
