Under Your Spell (Witches of Mayfair, Book 1) ReviewLike all the students at Lavender House, Elegance "Ella" St. James possesses special talents; as that is a prerequisite to get into the exclusive school. However, unlike her peers, she has no interest in spellbinding a man into marrying her. Instead she wants to act "normal" but first she is interested in uncovering the person who murdered her friend.
However her efforts at undercover sleuthing fail because wherever she goes regardless of the time, Thomas "Sir Drake" Donovan is always there. Thomas knows she is in over her head and worried about her even as he knows she is dangerous to his heart. Ella wants desperately to trust Thomas, but fears he may not be what her heart hopes he is; so she tells him nothing and continues to dig bringing her to the attention of someone who has killed before.
Readers will be under Lois Greiman's spell as her first Witches of Mayfair historical paranormal romance is an enchanting tale. Ella is a terrific, some might say foolish, heroine who knows what she wants and does not want until the interfering Thomas enters her life. He is heroic as he knows from their first encounter she is the one although she seems to reject him. Combining a delightful romance with a solid murder mystery, a bewitching paranormal element, and plenty of action, UNDER YOUR SPELL is a terrific one sitting read.

The Forbidden Circle: The Spell Sword / The Forbidden Tower ReviewPutting together -The Spell Sword- and -The Forbidden Tower- was a great idea, & this edition fills the bill. This classic entry in the saga of Darkover -- a lost [in time as well as space] colony of Humans who interbred with the alien cheryi, evolved into a feudal society with the addition of "magic" as laran psi-powers, then were rediscovered by humans from Earth [Terrans] -- is an especially good 'textbook' for people learning to use their own inner strengths.
Watching the almost-typical fairytale romance of Keeper Callista Lanart and Terran spacer Andrew Carr bloom into something else is magical in the best sense of the word. Damon Ridenow -- outcast from his beloved Arilinn Tower because he's actually more than just a Matrix technician -- and his love Ellemir [sister to Callista] are not just pretty people filling a need for extra faces in -The Spell Sword-. The four craft a friendship that becomes more than just friendship ... and will have a crucial effect on Darkovan history.
The action really kicks in as the tale progresses in -The Forbidden Tower-. Callista discovers -- painfully -- that the heritage she thought she had left behind as virginal Keeper of Arilinn Tower is almost more than she can bear to shatter [the fact that it nearly kills Andrew isn't just peripheral, either]. Ellimir discovers that she actually is gifted with the power of laran, and Damon takes centre stage as he discovers that he is a Keeper himself ... Keeper of what leronis Leonie Hastur scornfully calls "the Forbidden Tower". As the four individuals become more than just two married couples, they uncover vital knowledge lost in the millenia known as the Ages of Chaos.
The tragic denoument is kept away, which perhaps is just as well. If you truly want to be depressed, pick up -The Bloody Sun- to learn the fates of the four and their children. Although not quite as tragic as the hinted ending of another group of similar people, hinted at in -Sharra's Exile-, it can be a true 'downer' after the triumphant ending of -The Forbidden Tower-.
At least the knowledge is kept, however. It seems that no one can truly vanquish Varzil the Good! Although even *that* might be up for re-examination with -The Fall of Neskaya-...The Forbidden Circle: The Spell Sword / The Forbidden Tower Overview

The Marriage Spell: A Novel ReviewLately, it seems as if I've been reading a lot of slightly above average romance novels, many of which I've rated higher than I usually would because I'd forgotten what a really well written romance novel reads like. And then I picked up Mary Jo Putney's "The Marriage Spell," and was reminded again of how important an interesting storyline, credibly told, with the appropriate amount of "fleshing out," good character development and a nicely developed romance subplot are to a romance novel. Truth to tell, historical romance novels with a magical motif aren't exactly my cup of tea; but I have to admit, "The Marriage Spell" was just so beguiling and so engrossing, that I'm hoping that this is the first installment in a series that will feature the young men who had been sent to Stonebridge Academy in order to have magic beaten out of them.
What happens when a lord brought up to abhor magic and all those who practice it ends up promising to marry the local healing woman if she agrees to save his life? This oft used plot premise get a fresh and tantalizing airing in "The Marriage Spell." Set in Regency-era England, where magic is an accepted way of life, even if many aristocrats frown on members of their class practicing magic, Jack Langdon, Lord Frayne, has been bred to hate anything and distrusts anyone who has anything to do with magic. But that was before he was fatally wounded in a hunting accident, and before his life hung in the balance. Now, only the local healing woman, Abigail Barton (a peer's daughter, herself) can cure him. But in order to do so, she would have to risk her own personal safety. And so, almost whimsically, because Abby has been secretly attracted to Jack for quite a few years now, she proposes that Jack agree to marry her in exchange for her risking her life to save his. The last thing she expected was that Jack would agree; or that, once she had saved his life that he would still agree to go through with the marriage. But while Jack and Abby have resolved to lead separate lives once they are married and Abby has conceived, they never expected the strong tug of attraction that would devlop between then. Is it magic? Or could two people with such opposing viewpoints on magic be actually ideally suited to each other?
If you're tired of romance novels where one character or the other is always tearing about in a dreadful temper, where the hero or heroine is just too foolish, silly and immature for words, or the ones that employ the BIG MISUNDERSTANDING as a plot device, where the hero and heroine retire to their separate corners to sulk and plot, then you really want to check out "The Marriage Spell." Both Jack and Abby are likable, intelligent and mature characters who think things through before rushing off to confront and accuse. I really enjoyed all those chapters that allowed for Jack and Abby to interact and get to know and like each other, before the marriage took place. This allowed for readers to "see" the developing relationship, appreciate the love that grows between the two and see just how well paired these two were. It is true, however, that the book unfolded at a slightly sedate pace with the last third of the book, where Jack finally uses his growing powers to save his home, unfolding at a much swifter pace. This gave the book a slightly off center feel, but that was a small thing, hardly worth mentioning at all. I enjoyed this book immensely, and would go so far as to term it an unputdownable. All in all, I'd recommend "The Marriage Spell" to anyone looking for a quality romance novel to read. It's well worth its hardcover price and should stand the test of several rereadings. The Marriage Spell: A Novel Overview

The Sevenfold Spell ReviewMost readers who follow the fantasy blogs will recognize Tia Nevitt's name -- she's been running her own debut blog for years and is a regular contributor at the website I contribute to. She also happens to be a personal friend; she lives in my city and we like to trade books.
I suppose that's why she didn't send me a review copy of her own debut novella, The Sevenfold Spell. She probably figured I'd feel obligated to say something nice. Well I don't (I'm not as nice as she thinks I am), but I also don't like to critique my friends, so I quietly downloaded The Sevenfold Spell onto my Kindle and didn't tell her I was reading it.
In Tia's take on the Sleeping Beauty story, Talia and her mother's livelihood and prospects are devastated when spinning wheels are banned. Talia, who has not been blessed with a pretty face, is forced to use other charms and skills (that's the polite way to say it) to make ends meet.
As you've probably guessed by now, I must have liked The Sevenfold Spell, or else I wouldn't be writing this. This short novella (I read it in an evening), which was published by Harlequin's new e-book imprint, Carina Press, is definitely a romance and contains more seduction and sex scenes than I thought were possible to fit into such a short space, so it's not my usual fantasy fare, but I enjoyed this little diversion. It was well-written, humorous, the characterization was impressive (especially for such a short book), and the story was sweet.
I liked Tia's focus on a minor character in her re-imagined fairy tale. I understand that she has more of these in mind for the future. I'll be quietly downloading the next one, too.The Sevenfold Spell OverviewHave you ever wondered what happens to the other people in the fairy tale?Things look grim for Talia and her mother. By royal proclamation, the constables and those annoying "good" fairies have taken away their livelihood by confiscating their spinning wheel. Something to do with a curse on the princess, they said. Not every young lady has a fairy godmother rushing to her rescue.Without the promise of an income from spinning, Talia's prospects for marriage disappear, and she and her mother face destitution. Past caring about breaking an arbitrary and cruel law, rebellious Talia determines to build a new spinning wheel, the only one in the nation--which plays right into the evil fairy's diabolical plan. Talia discovers that finding a happy ending requires sacrifice. But is it a sacrifice she's willing to make?
