Aurora Consurgens: A Document Attributed to Thomas Aquinas on the Problem of Opposites in Alchemy : A Companion Work to C.G. Jung's Mysterium Conjunctionis (Studies in Jungian Psychology) ReviewNo one really knows who wrote the astonishing thirteenth-century treatise RISING DAWN (Aurora Consurgens), although the work is attributed to Thomas Aquinas, an attribution the Catholic Church has been at pains to deny. This translation starts with the text (it reads like a series of revelations and parables steeped in biblical quotations) followed by the depth-psychological commentary of von Franz. Of all the second-generation Jungians, perhaps only Edward Edinger matches her in clarity. In brilliance no one does.
Quite a few Jungians of my acquaintance haven't read this book even though it was intended as a supplement to Jung's MYSTERIUM CONIUNCTIONIS, the last of his longer works and his last word on the relationship between alchemy and the unconscious. Perhaps it's because the book is not an alchemical treatise; it is, as the commentator notes in an introduction, a rush of revelation by a man who resorted to both Christian and alchemical symbolism to come to grips with what must have been an overpowering confrontation with the numen--in this case Sophia, the Gnostic goddess of Wisdom and, in the Old Testament, the feminine counterpart to God.
As I read, however, I found myself continually distracted by the damnable Jungian habit of footnoting everything (a dozen per page) as well as by the commentator's inability to write one page without quoting Jung: a sad and unfortunate habit given her obvious wealth of knowledge and psychological depth. It's clear too that she did an enormous amount of theological and alchemical research and, I suspect, furnished Jung with a fair bulk of what showed up in his tomes on the art of alchemy.
Although this doesn't count against the book's commentary, this doctor of depth psychology finds himself wondering why none of the psychological interpretations take Sophia, the metals, and the Earth at their word. Again and again, references to the aliveness of these substances are interpreted as the alchemist's projection onto matter. But what if the alchemist wasn't projecting?Aurora Consurgens: A Document Attributed to Thomas Aquinas on the Problem of Opposites in Alchemy : A Companion Work to C.G. The Princess and the Pea (Love Spell) ReviewTHE PRINCESS AND THE PEA is a bit hard to find, as it is out of print, but it is worth the search. It's an entertaining version of the princess and the pea fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson. Set in 1895, the "princess" is Cece, an America heiress in her early twenties whose family thinks it time for her to be married. The "prince" is the Earl of Greystone (hey, wasn't that Tarzan's title?), who desperately needs to marry an heiress to repair his family estates and fortune. The two fall in love at first sight, both unaware of the other's true identity and circumstances. The Earl then dumps Cece, as he must marry for money. When he discovers she's an heiress, he thinks all turned out perfectly. Cece soon sets him straight, and he must earn his way back into her good graces. The Earl's mother sets many tests for Cece to pass before true long conquers all. Cece is a strong heroine, well able to deal with stuffy peers and meddling mothers-in-law. A delightful and entertaining story. Be sure to find this one!The Princess and the Pea (Love Spell) Overview
Preparing to inherit her father's business empire, independent nineteenth-century beauty Cecily White resists money-seeking suitors, until she is tempted by the Earl of Greystone, who she insists must prove his love to her.

Edmund's Struggle: Under the Spell of the White Witch (Narnia) ReviewI saw this on Amazon and wondered what it was like, so I picked it up.
This is an excellent book for the kids. Adapted from the movie, the book takes the reader through The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe from Edmund's point of view and interjects what he may have been thinking along the way.
It also has black and white photos from the movie.Edmund's Struggle: Under the Spell of the White Witch (Narnia) Overview

Spell Checkers Volume 1 ReviewI couldn't say Spell Checkers had me hooked at first glance, and even after reading through I'm still not sure how I feel about it. The wit is amazingly entertaining, and all the pop-culture references and other little Easter eggs entertained me throughout. The art changes here and there, and though it confused me at first, it's really nice to see different takes on the characters style-wise. But there is something about the story that makes me want to read in further.
It hasn't captured me entirely just yet, but I am enjoying it thus far. I do plan to read volume two when I can get it.Spell Checkers Volume 1 Overview

The Sevenfold Spell ReviewMost readers who follow the fantasy blogs will recognize Tia Nevitt's name -- she's been running her own debut blog for years and is a regular contributor at the website I contribute to. She also happens to be a personal friend; she lives in my city and we like to trade books.
I suppose that's why she didn't send me a review copy of her own debut novella, The Sevenfold Spell. She probably figured I'd feel obligated to say something nice. Well I don't (I'm not as nice as she thinks I am), but I also don't like to critique my friends, so I quietly downloaded The Sevenfold Spell onto my Kindle and didn't tell her I was reading it.
In Tia's take on the Sleeping Beauty story, Talia and her mother's livelihood and prospects are devastated when spinning wheels are banned. Talia, who has not been blessed with a pretty face, is forced to use other charms and skills (that's the polite way to say it) to make ends meet.
As you've probably guessed by now, I must have liked The Sevenfold Spell, or else I wouldn't be writing this. This short novella (I read it in an evening), which was published by Harlequin's new e-book imprint, Carina Press, is definitely a romance and contains more seduction and sex scenes than I thought were possible to fit into such a short space, so it's not my usual fantasy fare, but I enjoyed this little diversion. It was well-written, humorous, the characterization was impressive (especially for such a short book), and the story was sweet.
I liked Tia's focus on a minor character in her re-imagined fairy tale. I understand that she has more of these in mind for the future. I'll be quietly downloading the next one, too.The Sevenfold Spell OverviewHave you ever wondered what happens to the other people in the fairy tale?Things look grim for Talia and her mother. By royal proclamation, the constables and those annoying "good" fairies have taken away their livelihood by confiscating their spinning wheel. Something to do with a curse on the princess, they said. Not every young lady has a fairy godmother rushing to her rescue.Without the promise of an income from spinning, Talia's prospects for marriage disappear, and she and her mother face destitution. Past caring about breaking an arbitrary and cruel law, rebellious Talia determines to build a new spinning wheel, the only one in the nation--which plays right into the evil fairy's diabolical plan. Talia discovers that finding a happy ending requires sacrifice. But is it a sacrifice she's willing to make?

Under the Highlander's Spell ReviewThe heroine of this story, Zia, is the real focus of the book, although she's hardly under the Highlander's spell. The highlander in question, Artair Sinclare, we met in the previous book by this author. However in this story he seems to have somehow become emasculated and his only action appears to be to follow Zia around, making sure that she gets enough food and saying he'll protect her. His idea of protection is getting her to marry him; once she's a member of the powerful Sinclare family then the various people who are denouncing her as a witch will find they can't get anywhere with the accusations. The common theme in this sort of book, that of the hero having to come to a realisation that he is in love, is rather too hackneyed and feels too unrealistic to work well in this setting.
Zia is a rather stereotypical healer - entirely unselfconscious when healing, totally devoted to her patients, liable to do foolish and risky things in the name of healing. She also seems remarkably successful - there were no deaths of people she was treating during the course of the book which must be very unusual in that time. Perhaps more evidence that she really is a witch! The minor twist at the end with a secret that the Bishop holds wasn't particularly surprising although it did allow the story to be wrapped up well, but also didn't bode well for the Bishop's honesty and integrity in his clerical role.
With the rather unbelievable Zia, the nebulous Artair and a subplot about Artair's brother Ronan which wasn't resolved in this story, the book felt rather unremarkable. It is as if it's a transitional book between the author's stories of Cavan, the elder brother, and Ronan, the younger. Artair and Zia didn't really have anything special in the book that will help me to remember it in future. The setting in 16th century Scotland had rather more potential than was realised in the book and the fact that various characters regularly broke out into modern American English meant that this story is not one that piqued my attention or that will stay with me.

Moon Spell (The Tale of Lunarmorte #1) ReviewHer future was set into motion long before Caia Ribeiro was born. Gaia, Mother of all the gods, had grown tired of the war that her children waged upon each other. In her infinite wisdom she set forth a plan that would eventually stop the war. And unbeknownst to Caia, she was at the very heart of it.
Hidden away from her pack for ten years after her family was killed by The Hunter, an enemy of Pack Errante and member of the Midnight Coven, Caia is finally allowed to return home. But her return is not exactly a welcome event.
The pack had already lost family members protecting her. And her absence from the pack for so long meant that she was an outsider. An outsider that couldn't necessarily be trusted and someone who didn't necessarily trust them.
She knew that she was different from all the other lykans in the pack, she just didn't know quite how different. She didn't resemble them in look, nor did she have their quick tempers and easy camaraderie. But spending much of her life in near isolation away from the pack was bound to make her different.
What she didn't understand were the dark looks she got from some of the other pack members. All she knew was that they were keeping secrets. Secrets about her family. Secrets about her past. And secrets about why she alone was the target of the Midnight Coven's wrath.
But when those secrets come to light, will Caia be able to accept what she learns about who she is and what she has the potential to become?
***
Moon Spell is an intoxicating and utterly entertaining story that is brilliantly written. The dramatic opening paragraph will entice readers in and once the story sinks its claws in it won't let go until the very last word in the epilogue.
The story centers around Caia, a lykan who has been living under special protection apart from her pack since her family was killed by The Hunter. She and her guardian, Irini, were allowed to return when it was deemed safe enough, after The Hunter was found and killed.
When Caia returns she is immediately drawn to the pack Alpha, Lucien, who is to be her protector. And much to the dismay of another female pack member, Lucien seems drawn to her. But Lucien and the rest of the pack are keeping things from her. And her discovery of those secrets may cause Caia to walk away from her friends, from her pack and from Lucien, not only for their betrayal but for their safety.
Author Samantha Young has done a sensational job in crafting this world of lykans, magiks and other supernaturals, and in creating a harmonious balance between light and dark, good and evil, and love and loss.
The dynamic she has created between her two main characters, Caia and Lucien, elevates this story above many of its peers. Each of them struggles with their feelings for each other, with the complicated relationship they have with one another, and with their responsibilities and what is necessary for the greater good.
Her secondary characters are not left out and play an integral role in this story that continues for two more books. Each of whom, from the plotting and manipulative Alexa to the cocky and overconfident Mal to the sweet and good-hearted Jaeden to the kind and loyal Sebastian, adds to the story's appeal.
Moon Spell is not a book to be missed. It is perfect for readers who love all things paranormal, who want to get a feel for what it is like to run with the wolves, who love dramatic tension between the female and male leads and who don't mind the tears that come when a beloved character is lost along the way.
My favorite passage is actually the first:
The war had been raging for centuries; a war that breathed beneath human reality, lost in the labyrinth of their legends and folklore. It was a silent war of soundless screaming and invisible bloodshed.
***
A note to readers: In its eBook format, the story has not been adapted for an American audience so readers should expect alternate spelling and punctuation as well as certain "Britishims."Moon Spell (The Tale of Lunarmorte #1) OverviewEnter a world of fierce wolves, stunning magic and romance...It's bad enough feeling different among the human crowd, but feeling different among wolves? No one said returning to her pack would be easy, especially after ten years without them, but seventeen year old Caia Ribeiro is unprepared for the realities of the transition. Raised in a world where kids aren't scared by bedtime tales of the bogeyman but by the real life threat of enemy supernaturals who might come creeping into their community to kill them in their sleep, Caia is used to the darkness; she's used to the mystery and the intrigue of the ancient underworld war she's bound to by chance of birth. What she's having trouble with are pack members treating her with wary suspicion, the Elders tucking secrets behind their backs, and her young Alpha, Lucien, distracting her with a dangerous attraction from her decision to uncover the truth. But as the saying goes ‘the truth will out' and when it does, Caia will only have so long to prepare herself before the war comes pounding on their door threatening to destroy the safe, secret lives of the wolves' and the girl they protect.Moon Spell the Second Edition: Book One revised and re-edited.
