Animal Spirit ReviewTelesco's Animal Spirit is a nice concept, but poorly written and sometimes even useless. The best way to review it is by going through the chapters:
what is animal magick? Discusses the general idea. Petricia does one of the most common and annoying things a wiccan author does - invents her own tradition, in this case, "wild witchery".
2 - The scientific dimension: this chapter is actually the most usable and I was really happy to see a wiccan book that doesn't ignore the scientific point of view. The author discusses animals not by their cultural attributes but by their habitat, feeding habits and such.
Animal omens: Instead of giving us a long detailed list of animal attributes, somehow the author thinks giving us several lists (animal totems list, omens list, dream symbols... there are maybe twenty hard-to-reference lists in this book!).
Fur, Feather and Fin: Is a useless chapter. She gives you general information on how to reserve dead animals found in the woods or on the highway. Not only this is dangerous, if the readers would actually want to follow this idea, they would probably read a book by an expert, and not just a set of tips.
The Circle of Life: discusses the general idea about using animals in rituals. Note there are no real rituals or spells in this book, although the word "spells" was added to the book's title, to allure buyers.
Zodiac and Beyond: A general overview of western and Chinese astrology. Very superficial and short, but I guess it was nice she mentioned it.
Feng Shui Bestiary: Gives you, again, a general idea about feng shui. There are no actual tips here - just again, 4 lists of correspondences, that repeat the same information.
Totems, Guides, Familiars and Teachers: A chapter with general tips about finding your totem. Of course, no rituals or any practical ideas, just another list of correspondences (with the same animals...).
The most useful part in this book, besides the scientific point of view in chapter 2, is appendix B with one big list of (yet again) animal correspondences, only this time it is very general and altogether helpful.
Overall, this is a nice superficial book that gives you ideas about how to live closer to nature with animals. It repeats itself often, and has no practical point of view at all, but is nice to keep as a reference.Animal Spirit Overview

Cakes and Ale for the Pagan Soul: Spells, Recipes, and Reflections from Neopagan Elders and Teachers ReviewThe newest entry in the books "for the Soul" is a book of collected experiences, stories, spellworkings and comfort food put together by Crossing Press and edited by our own Trish Telesco. The contributions are from some well known authors as well as some community elders.
The book is divided into themed sections, each containing some articles or essays. The topics covered are Path of Beauty, Wisdom of the World, Nature's Advisers, Community: Honor, Respect and Gratitude, Rituals for Life and Healing, Spells and other Sundries. These are all topics which would interest pagans of all walks of life and provide food for thought and meditation on our lives, our chosen paths and our world.
Some of the stories are personal experiences, crossroads in someone's life. Other stories are essays on our treatment of Mother Earth, the pagan community and the greater community of Humanity. Some are advises for pursuing our personal paths, "how to" articles on working rituals, and the usual "love" spells, recipes for the pagan passion of food or a quick remedy for a common ailment.
Most of the articles are short. This allows for mediation on the topic and some soul searching for inner truths if you are so inclined. There are some touching stories here, there are some moments of meditation and awareness. There is also some material here that begs for our attention and gives us some hard lessons.
The opening introduction by Trish Telesco is more of a statement on Neo-Paganism than it is on the contents of the book. There are statistics here that have no references to where they came from, while others seem to draw questionable conclusions. While it is true that there are probably more pagans than we roughly estimate, that paganism is a fast growing culture, and that the pagan religions are drawing much attention from various sources, we cannot draw any population conclusion based on the number of witch websites in Google or how many people are registered as pagans on a website. And while the actual numbers are unavailable and may spark some speculation, we need to remember that not everyone lives on the web.
However, it's not the introduction we are looking at. We are here for the content. With contributions by such well known authors as Margot Adler, Starhawk, Selena Fox and Dorothy Morrison, it is hard to ignore this book. The articles chosen fit the topics well, and while the articles may be short, they do provide much food for thought. After some of the stories, there is a small "project box" containing some kind of instruction to further your involvement with the topic discussed. After an article by Bonnie Jean Hamilton about Releasing your Fears there is a small spellworking to further your own personal work on fear. After an article on Discovery Through Dreaming by Ann Moura there is a small box on keeping a dream journal.
There are stories on personal tragedy, community ritual backfires, pagan protests, healing the healers, and more. There are outstanding articles by the likes of Jessie Wolf Hardin, Kristin Madden and Ashleen O'Gaea. There are also some gems by some lesser known authors like Ambrose Hawk and Precious Nielsen.
The stories cover the human community, the animals we love, the earth we cherish. There is much here in the way of positive affirmations and comments on the human condition. Personal responsibility, perfect love and perfect trust, and so much more that we hold dear are touched upon for our reflection.
There is appeal here for most folks following the pagan path who are looking for food for thought on their spirituality, their community, their lives and how interconnected this all is with our Mother the Earth. There is fluff amongst the trees of wisdom here as well, but that is the general appeal of books like this; that they have something for everyone. And I am sure if you pick up this book you will find a couple of articles or essays that will touch upon a particular string in your mind and it will harmonize with your own personal song. I do recommend this book for it's content, as it will also give you more of an insight into pagan spirituality and the pagan heart. This is a good presentation and one which I think you will find challenging and intelligent as well as inspirational and heart warming. boudicaCakes and Ale for the Pagan Soul: Spells, Recipes, and Reflections from Neopagan Elders and Teachers Overview

A Little Book of Mirror Magick: Meditations, Myths, Spells (Little Book Series) ReviewTrish Telesco has written a few of these smaller 'pocketbooks' on various topics. The one that comes to mind the most is the one about cats in myth and magic. This book contains much the same type of information. Ms. Telesco covers the myths behind mirrors, examines the uses for mirrors and the different types of mirrors and how to use mirrors in spell magic as well as personal meditations.
The book is researched and the bibliography contains some interesting sources for her research. The material is well laid out, the chapters contain her usual witty references and it is easy to understand.
Her advice is practical in typical Trish Telesco style and she offers encouragement in the practice and study of this particular medium. Overall, the book is a good beginner point for mirror scrying and history of the mirror in magic.
The size of the book was probably determined by the length of the book (only five chapters and two appendixes) and it is a most uncomfortable size. The cover, while catchy (a small reflective surface pasted on the front of the book), is unimpressive. The price of the book is overstated in my opinion for the content of the book, and is based purely on presentation, which I consider not up to par. Had this been a better produced small hard cover with a nicer print job, as her cat book, I would have been a bit more pleased at the presentation.
If you are getting this book as a gift, it may be worth the price, but to augment my own personal library I would wait till it was discounted a bit before purchase.
Please note the content of the book is worthy of attention, but the packaging and pricing is a bit off. boudicaA Little Book of Mirror Magick: Meditations, Myths, Spells (Little Book Series) Overview

Goddess in My Pocket: Simple Spells, Charms, Potions, and Chants to Get You Everything You Want ReviewThis book is a great little quick reference guide. While I am not an experianced "witch" I am interested in magic and believe it works. This book would be a great gift for someone who is interested in magic but doesn't know where to start. The simple spells are user-friendly and fun. Plus, because the author uses everyday things in her spells, you don't have to run all over trying to find unusual ingredients!Goddess in My Pocket: Simple Spells, Charms, Potions, and Chants to Get You Everything You Want Overview

Good Spells for Bad Days: Broken Hearts, Bounced Checks, and Bitchy Co-Workers - Simple Magick to Fix Any Misfortune ReviewThis Book never should have been written. It appears to make a spell for "any misfortune" when it's actually luring it's readers into a web of incredibly bad Karma. Granted, the Author spends the time telling readers about Intent and Good vs. Bad but she glosses over it. She doesn't touch on the Rule of 3 (or 9 depending on what one chooses) and how what one does will come back magnified 3 or 9 times good or bad. Bad Karma slapping one in the face 9 time sucks incredibly hard. the teens and adults who might read this book aren't properly warned. She goes into "10 Good Things Magick can do for You" (p2) luring young readers in like a Spider; readers who have never been properly introduced into the worlds of Intent. One cannot fix Misfortune with just Magic -- yes, it's properly spelled with just a "c". Whether you like it or not, putting a "k" on the end of it will not make a word more powerful. It just makes you a bad speller; try using the spell-check, please.
I've been a Pagan for over 35 years. I would never recommend something like this. This book and this author is something to take your money and leave you with Bad Karma up the arse. Magic can't fix your problems. Only YOU can.
Try Earth Magic by Scott Cunningham. If you're going to spend money spend it on something that's worth some time. Ms. Alexander's books are trash in my opinion. There's spells in Mr. Cunningham's book as well, but there is a far more detailed course on Ethics. You can't have Magic without Ethics; otherwise you're in for one heckofa Karmic slap.
Please be careful. We tiny Mother Goddesses worry about you.Good Spells for Bad Days: Broken Hearts, Bounced Checks, and Bitchy Co-Workers - Simple Magick to Fix Any Misfortune Overview

Magick Made Easy: Charms, Spells, Potions and Power ReviewI love this book. Patricia Telesco is a fantastic author. The Basic magickal components (Herbs, stones, etc), and their traditional/suggested uses in Folk Magick was well organized(alphabetically, by category) and well explained! This book is unintimidating and easy to refrence. She also gives the reader a good neutral foundation on which they can build their own opinions and practices. The very best aspect of this book was the fact that she presented a concept that is very much tied to various Earth Religions, but didn't give the book a religious slant at all. (Being a Christian Witch,) I appreciated the fact that there wasn't a pre-set religious affiliation to the information! This allows one to learn just "Magick"...leaving the religious application up to the reader!!The book is and easy read for the beginner, and a valuable refrence.Magick Made Easy: Charms, Spells, Potions and Power Overview

The Teen Book Of Shadows: Star Signs, Spells, Potions, and Powers ReviewThis book is extremely helpful for those interested in Wicca and the Craft. It gives you tips on how to tell your parents of your interest and how to answer the questions they'll have. It also gets you started on your Book of Shadows. Telesco gives you a few sample spells and rituals to get you started and to put in your Book. She also includes information about your star sign, such as "Aromas That Accent The Positive", "Love, Family and Friendship", "Power Colors", "Body Tips", "Clothes and Jewelry" and "The Future". She also includes a chapter on "Bedroom Feng Shui". There's also information on how to create your own spells. There are spells for relieving anger, calming your nerves before a class presentation, and many other helpful spells.
