Simplified Qabala Magic ReviewIn the past, I've found Jewish Kabbalah books long on rhetoric, long on history but short on practical application and personal development. Not being particular, I switched over to the magical tradition. The first (magical) book I tried reading--Gareth Knight's book, A Practical Guide to Qabalistic Symbolism--went right over my head. By then, I realized I was really a beginner: I didn't even know how to meditate or visualize...or anything.
Simplified (Qabala) Magic by Ted Andrews helped me out a great deal. Not only did it make the Tree of Life platable for a budding magus, it suppled me with simple meditation and visualization techniques, tips on candle-color-fragrance selection, and even showed me how to pronounce/intone the sephiroth God-names. Generally, I appreciate his brief and gentle approach.
This book, IMHO, is useful to those who want a straightforward, practical approach to the Tree of Life. Add to it, Andrew's More Simplified Magic (which covers the Tree's paths), one would then have all he initially needs to enter the mystical qabalah.Simplified Qabala Magic Overview

Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) ReviewJust the sections on the warning signs of people or groups who might not have your best interests at heart are worth the price of this book! The rest of the book is just as well-written and informative, and should prove an invaluable resource for not only any solitary looking to join (or start) a coven, but also for covens to focus and improve their own practices. The author has a great way of informing, advising, and encouraging in her writing without any condescension or intolerance. Whether or not you ever plan to work with a group magickally, this book is worth having!Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) Overview

Dreaming the Dark : Magic, Sex, and Politics ReviewEnter the mysterious world of magic, sexuality, and the deepest part of yourself. This is the goal of "Dreaming the Dark" by Starhawk, author of the bestselling book "The Spiral Dance", considered essential reading in most Wiccan circles. Picking up where her other books leave off, "Dreaming the Dark" is a guide for putting one's beliefs into practice, an attempt to reach out to a world largely deprived of spiritual experience and reclaim the sacred within and fuse it with political activism.
Starhawk co-founded Reclaiming, a tradition of Witchcraft that emphasizes spirituality and political action, and a majority of the text is focus on examining structures of power. She separates power into two categories: "power over" and "power from within" and discusses how such structures have been used throughout history to suppress and control. Magic, as Starhawk defines as "the art and practice of changing consciousness at will", can be teamed with political action to cause effective change in our society and help to preserve what we hold as sacred.
For those unfamiliar with Paganism, "Dreaming the Dark" is the perfect collection of stories, chants, and bits of information that will give the reader and accurate portrayal of Pagan paradigm. Starhawk clearly examines what Witches and Pagans hold sacred, specifically Nature and how it is essential that action is taken for preservation. Beautiful and often poetic descriptions of the Goddess and rituals paint vivid picture of the triumphs and struggles of many in the Pagan movement.
"Dreaming the Dark" is not a book for the faint of heart, but it is necessary. It is challenging yet inspiring and deeply moving. For anyone interested in modern religious movement and especially those interested in politics, it is an essential read. "Dreaming the Dark" is not a book of spells, meditations, or ritual, it is an invitation, a calling to take a stand in the face of injustice and reclaim the whole of our being.Dreaming the Dark : Magic, Sex, and Politics Overview

Sepher Rezial Hemelach: The Book of the Angel Rezial ReviewTranslating is a tricky business, especially when the translator is dealing with esoteric literature, which wasn't meant to be read by everybody. The translator should know the language he's translating from pretty well. Unfortunately it is very obvious to anyone who knows Hebrew, that mr. Savedows knowlegde of Hebrew (and Aramaic as well) is very limited. He has made a lot of very strange mistakes and the translation consists of various elements that are NOT present in the original text. He makes ordinary Hebrew words into mysterious, magical names. I could go on, but I think it is save to say that this book is not a translation, but a not-very-much-to-do-with-the-original-text interpretion. Anyone considering to buy this book should keep this in mind.Sepher Rezial Hemelach: The Book of the Angel Rezial Overview

The Lost Art of Enochian Magic: Angels, Invocations, and the Secrets Revealed to Dr. John Dee ReviewThis book's best part is its chapter on the "Enochian Meditation" which is somewhat innovative and very interesting. To get to this chapter, though, people familiar with Dee and Enochian have to suffer through several chapters of introductory material that is pretty redundant unless you are a complete beginner on the subject. For this reason the book, while a good one, was a disappointment to me because there was very little presented that was new. Even the meditation followed theories similar to those I had developed in the course of study for this magic -- though the book presented a more coherent and organized meditation than any I had come up with.
Regardless of my own disappointments, I believe that this book is worth getting. The author does have some interesting insights into the magic which are worth examining, and the meditation presented is definitely worth studying and adding to anyone's magical practices. Just don't let your expectations get too high.

Gay Witchcraft: Empowering the Tribe ReviewThis is the best book I have ever read on Wicca and the key to unlocking this spirituality for me. I have been interested in Wicca and paganism for a long time and just sort of dabbled, but never got too involved. I even had pagan friends and went to pagan events, which were beautiful, but I could never seem to find my own connection. Most of the books I would pick up on paganism just didn't speak to me or seem too interesting, even though I felt Wicca to be closest to my own spiritual nature. I tried Dragon wicca and gothic wicca, and both left me cold. After moving to the Northwest last year, I discovered New Witch magazine at a local bookstore, which I think is a great publication! Ads in that magazine led me to this book, Gay Witchcraft. Christopher Penczak writes in a way that is very enjoyable and conversational as if he is sitting there speaking with you. He takes you through witchcraft in an enjoyable, step by step manner that brings everything together and gradually makes sense as part of the whole. I had always had a bit of misgiving about witchcraft because I had trouble believing there were zillions of deities just out there floating around in the sky somewhere. Now that I've been reading this book, I understand that isn't really what witches believe and have a clear understanding of how it all works. A good friend of mine who is pagan said I would know my path when I found a book that not only "clicked" with me, but that it should cover things like working with energy, grounding oneself, etc. This is the basis for the first part of the book, learning how to work with energy and get oneself in the right energetic state before even attempting to work on more complex things like spells. No wonder so many people are turned off by witchcraft, most books make it sound like you can just light a candle, mumble a few words and your spell will come true. That isn't the case, it takes a lot of focus, energy and hard work, like most things. Although this book is written for gay practitioners and creates a great comfort level for us, I believe it would be a useful book for anyone getting into wicca and wanting to know how it all works and how to put it together. I don't know if it's coincidence, but since I've been working with this book, a lot of things in my life are starting to go the way I want them to. Even things I never thought would happen are happening. And I definitely, finally feel connected to something spiritual, which is giving me newfound inner strength and confidence, I even quit smoking! Thank you, Christopher, thank you, thank you, blessed be!Gay Witchcraft: Empowering the Tribe Overview

Grimoire Dehara Book One: Kaimana (Wraeththu Mythos S.) ReviewThe opportunity to read anything written by Storm Constantine is a gift. I was most moved in this presentation of Chaos Magick by Constantine's ability to put forth a system that fosters such intense evaluation of self and the release of personal assumption. In that regard few systems of magick stand out of their own way so gracefully.
I knew from reading the Wraeththu series that Constantine knows her stuff when it comes to elementally tapping into and moving life force. The rituals she's developed in this practice carry the same power that I felt through all of my Reiki attunements and the more "Enochian" level work that I've done. It's impressive, to say the least.
Yes, I'm a fangirl, and I had to subdue a squeal through the whole read. The thing is, the magick is real. From one who thrived on the Wraeththu mythos and thought Constantine had so artfully brought their world to life in words, I am moved by her dedication to her own imagination to share their system of magick so effectively and so clearly close to her heart. The book's teachings are no less remarkably packaged in beautiful prose and artwork.

Mind into Matter: A New Alchemy of Science and Spirit ReviewFred Alan Wolf's done it again! His latest book, MIND INTO MATTER, is a masterpiece of insight into the hidden workings of our magical, mysterious universe. As I read this book, I felt exhilarated to join Wolf on his journey "to find our mind" on the frontier of the imaginal and the real.
MIND INTO MATTER is structured around Wolf's explanation of the significance and meaning behind the first nine letter-symbols in the Hebrew alphabet, with a separate chapter devoted to each Hebrew letter. The book begins with the concept of Spirit within the Void, and continues onward to Creation, Animation, Resistance, Vitality, Replication, Chance, Unification, and Structure. We witness the new alchemy at work in the process of Animation, where we notice how we Think, Feel, Sense, and Intuit the world around us.
I love Wolf's playful way of describing thought experiments throughout his book, alongside fascinating research material from physicists and neurophysiological researchers that suggest how our conscious minds form memories of events. On a deep level, we are aware of all possibilities available to us, and the one we remember as being real is the one we choose to observe. Since information flows from the future to our present time, we have what we need to select the path we most desire.
To everyone who wishes to more fully grasp the breadth, depth, and height of who we truly are and how we interact with the universe, I give this book my highest recommendation.Mind into Matter: A New Alchemy of Science and Spirit Overview

Cast in God's Image: Discovering Your Personality Type Using the Enneagram and Kabbalah ReviewThis is excellent and rudimentary for those interested in the enneagram and its relationship to the Kabbalah. It is basic enough that one can read it with no pror knowledge and get and overview of both. Addison is very gentle as he introduces the enneagram, which is uncommon since the enneagram is base on compulsions. Addison provides an excellent introduction, although his other book on these two understanding is much more in depth and similarly gentle.Cast in God's Image: Discovering Your Personality Type Using the Enneagram and Kabbalah Overview

Va-Va-Voodoo: Find Love, Make Love & Keep Love ReviewI wasn't expecting much when I picked up this title. The author is a close friend of Ross Heaven who wrote the abortion that is 'Vodou Shaman' and the cover screams tacky.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a range of magical techniques that would be useful to women (and men!) in a variety of love situations.
The contents of this book actually falls distinctly into the hoodoo category in my opinion.
It is hoodoo but with the use of the Lwa - in a very non-trad way. When I say use I mean USE which some practitioners who have spent years building up relationships with their spirits and living vodou may find offensive. I just wish she wouldn't keep asserting that it is 'real voodoo', there is no reglemen here. It might pass in New Orleans but it certainly wouldn't it Haiti.
Contrary to the authors constant assertion that she is giving away huge 'voodoo' secrets, which she most certainly is not, pretty much everything here can be found in print elsewhere - mistakes included.
The idea that the names of plants contain hints as to what they are used for being a big secret..? I'm sorry but you'd have to have been born last week not to have worked that one out.
So to sum up; if you're looking for a book that will tell you anything about 'voodoo' then look elsewhere. If you're looking for a fun look at love magic then this would be a good place to start.Va-Va-Voodoo: Find Love, Make Love & Keep Love Overview

Ancient Egyptian Magic: Classic Healing and Ritual for the 21st Century ReviewWasn't what I hoped. As a devotee of Isis, I was disappointed to see that this book barely mentioned the Knot of Isis, which is a shame because the Knot of Isis is such a huge part of Egyptian magic and religion. There seems to be more stories and myths behind the charms and spells in here rather than the actual application. There's also not that much on ritual, which is another big part of Egyptian magic and religion. I think what bothered me most was the reference to crystals for healing, which seems too New Ageish.Ancient Egyptian Magic: Classic Healing and Ritual for the 21st Century Overview

The Book of Spells: Postive Enchantments to Enhance Your Life ReviewAs a "Spell Collector" of sorts, this book was a nice and cheap treat. The introduction is pretty short and to the point, and if you are serious about the religions that are often hidden behind spell craft, I suggest other books. Stil, Johnstone presents exactly what the cover says, and then some. Most of the spells are pretty rational, and do not require expensive and hard to find ingredients, which is a major plus. The small amount of info Johnstone gives also can help in developing and creating your own spells and rituals. My only complaints are his somewhat inaccurate information on history (namely on witches and Wicca), and his blurbs about needing specific tools. The tools are nice to have, to add to the psychotrip of casting, but aren't necessary and almost always substitutable. Still, a good find! The Book of Spells: Postive Enchantments to Enhance Your Life Overview

Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: A Complete Guide to Loving Enchantment ReviewI got this book last Yule from a friend. I have never heard of this title so I placed it on the side thinking I will read it later.
Since receiving it, I must say I call upon this book a lot when there is a problem or I am stuck. This is one of the most useful and helpful books in my library.
Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: The complete guide of magical enchantment is a wonderful book. However, I think the first four words puts people off. They think this is just another spell book. However, it is so much more.
In this book, there is a vast collection of spells and recipes for wonderful charms, talismans and amulets. However, there is so much more.
This is a great book for beginners as well as a great reference book for all of us who has been practicing for a while.
It covers all the basics from basic traditions of beliefs and it takes a look at the magickal tools, deities, words of the Wiccan way. It also shows you some helpful physical and mental techniques. This book shows you how to prepare an altar and the meaning of certain symbols and colours to everything in between.
What this book has that many books do not is a true Do-it-yourself style. There is wonderful recipes to make your own oils, incense to even making a simple robe. It takes you step by step so anyone can do the spells or make any item in this book.
Pamela Ball's writing is easy to understand. She is best known for her dream books. However, this book in my opinion is her best. The information in this book is very useful and helpful. However, what I love about this book is NOT, it is not boring. The writing is simple and uncluttered.
This book is completely underrated, and not given a fair share as other books on the subject of Wicca. Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: The complete guide of magical enchantment should be in any Pagan/Wiccan's library as much as any other book on the subject.
It is a shame that book is no longer in print. This is a lesser-known gem that should be hailed just as much as other beloved books of the path.Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: A Complete Guide to Loving Enchantment Overview

Teen Witch: Wicca for a New Generation ReviewThis book is not for those who are serious about their religion or serious about learning about contemporary paganism. This book is for people who like having their beliefs trivialised, sanitised and dumbed-down. This book is not even for beginning witches; it's more depressingly funny than it is educational.
Obviously intended to be mass-marketed to teens, this book makes no attempts at providing valuable information. Instead, it focuses on offering a plethora of recipes for spells in an attempt to grab the interest of teens. The spells themselves are not even serious in nature; stopping parents from inflicting harsh punishments on you when you do wrong, getting cute boyfriends and fighting -- get this -- locker elves.
On top of offering ridiculous "information" and cheesey spells, Ravenwolf presents a reality of witchcraft that is, in fact, not reality. Her idea and very definition of witchcraft (that which the entire premise of the book is based on) is very limiting and -- dare I say -- inaccurate. This book is not about witchcraft, it's about making money by presenting the author's own ideas as fact in a way that will make teenagers eat it up.
In truth, Ravenwolf's 'Teen Witch' is about as representative of modern witchcraft and neo-paganism as Disneyland is to reality. Whitewashed, simplified and often outright incorrect, this book has NO value as a text medium (maybe firewood). Furthermore, when presented from a condescending tone (which we as readers need, since we apparently are not up on par intellectually with the Great Silver RavenWolf) this book should be offensive to any reader and at age.
Do yourself a favour and buy a REAL book on modern witchcraft.Teen Witch: Wicca for a New Generation Overview

Spellcaster: Book of Magick ReviewI can't rave enough about Spellcaster! I've always wanted to learn to cast a spell, make a circle and use all the right correstpondences. This book has everything I needed, right down to how to make a besom (witch broom). I found a list of crystals and what they do, feathers, moon phases, all the herbs and so much more. The list of spellcasting tools and how to make an altar was fantastic. I've learned so much already!
All the spells in the book can be used for me or for someone I care about. There is a cool section for more advanced witches to make their own spells too. I really like the sheets in the back that help me while I learn to make a spell of my own. I tried a wishing spell...and my wish came true! How great is that? Thank you Lady Rose, finally a book that has everything I need! I love this spellbook! Blessed Be!Spellcaster: Book of Magick Overview

Magical Housekeeping: Simple Charms and Practical Tips for Creating a Harmonious Home ReviewTerrific!!! An accessible and fun combination of feng shui, magic, and all manner of rites, prayers and rituals for creating a harmonious home. Just past chapter 2 I'd already cleared out a corner in my bedroom that I never really liked and transformed it into a simple place for cut flowers, a crystal, and a little bound volume in which my husband and I can leave sweet notes for each other. Needless to say, this never would have occurred to me without Magical Housekeeping. I am actually looking forward to going through my house area by area, inch by inch (unheard of!) to add this same, new sparkly feeling.
The recipes and directions for creating benevolent aromas, blessings, and protections for all areas of the house are 100% user-friendly. I particularly loved the chapters on our animal and plant friends. I kept saying to myself, "Why not think this way?" The dose of whimsy throughout the book is just right. For instance, there's a spray I'm going to use the next time I have an argument with my husband. I'm figuring he couldn't possibly stay serious once I tell him he's just been zapped with "Lighten Up Sparkle Spray"!!
I finished the book in front of the fire last night and was rewarded this morning by a chance encounter with a spider (Lady Spider, I should say) who I carefully escorted outside in a plastic cup. I took the book's suggestion of asking Ms. Spider a serious question because .... well.... why not? The same goes for blessing my broom with a fairly involved ritual. Why not? I'm counting on the fact that it will imbue my sweeping with a certain "je ne sais quoi." If I remember, I'm definitely going to blow kisses into the oven when I cook. I've heard of kitchen witches, I even used to have one, I just never thought of going this far. The author is both serious and fun-loving. The book has invited me to lighten up, tune into a more creative, childlike - yet highly intentional - way of living. The ending is wonderful - about insides and outsides being one and how taking care of our personal spaces helps us all to create a more loving world. I love this book!Magical Housekeeping: Simple Charms and Practical Tips for Creating a Harmonious Home Overview

A Little Book of Mirror Magick: Meditations, Myths, Spells (Little Book Series) ReviewTrish Telesco has written a few of these smaller 'pocketbooks' on various topics. The one that comes to mind the most is the one about cats in myth and magic. This book contains much the same type of information. Ms. Telesco covers the myths behind mirrors, examines the uses for mirrors and the different types of mirrors and how to use mirrors in spell magic as well as personal meditations.
The book is researched and the bibliography contains some interesting sources for her research. The material is well laid out, the chapters contain her usual witty references and it is easy to understand.
Her advice is practical in typical Trish Telesco style and she offers encouragement in the practice and study of this particular medium. Overall, the book is a good beginner point for mirror scrying and history of the mirror in magic.
The size of the book was probably determined by the length of the book (only five chapters and two appendixes) and it is a most uncomfortable size. The cover, while catchy (a small reflective surface pasted on the front of the book), is unimpressive. The price of the book is overstated in my opinion for the content of the book, and is based purely on presentation, which I consider not up to par. Had this been a better produced small hard cover with a nicer print job, as her cat book, I would have been a bit more pleased at the presentation.
If you are getting this book as a gift, it may be worth the price, but to augment my own personal library I would wait till it was discounted a bit before purchase.
Please note the content of the book is worthy of attention, but the packaging and pricing is a bit off. boudicaA Little Book of Mirror Magick: Meditations, Myths, Spells (Little Book Series) Overview
