Atlas of Video-EEG Monitoring ReviewI bought this book for the DVD. It is not worth it. I expected the DVD would have the EEG associated with the video. It does not. It has the video but part of the EEG is in the book. So, you suppose to view the video and look at the EEG in the book. I am not sure how helpful that is if you try to learn more about video correlation with actual events.

Dragon Stones: Book One of the Dragon Stone Saga (Volume 1) ReviewDragon Stones by Kristian Alva
Defiant Press - July 14,2011
[...]
Facebook: not sure
Emperor Vosper has this plan to kill all of the dragons. They are driven to the edge of existence, almost forgotten about and only talked about in whispers as a wistful memory.
When Elias Dorgumir finds a dragon stone, he gets more than he bargained for and his nice quiet life is completely shattered. Now he must escape the emperor and find safety with the dwarves.
What can I say? I am so excited about this series! I can't wait to get the second book to review. It has been my experience that fantasy books; regardless of the target age groups are always either really good or really bad. I don't think that I have ever read one that was just "okay". If I have, I don't remember it. This truly was an unexpected delight. Honestly, the only thing that really bothered me was the fact that the action was set in motion with the cliché kid who doesn't listen to his grandmother because he wants to help out. It is a little cliché but man, nicely done.
What I loved loved loved about this book was that it didn't bog you down with the history of the land or the details of world building. You start in a time when great battles have already been fought, the evil emperor is already in charge and the people of the land are simply trying to survive. The history is given in snippets at just the right time and you're never given more than you need. Elias, what a character with potential! There wasn't a lot of depth given to him, as far as the role that he will ultimately play in the story but I like him. There is clearly more to learn about him and the secrets of his family.
The ending! Oh. My. Goodness. I was at work when I got to the last page, to the last sentence. Talk about a cliffhanger, a sentence that just totally baseball bat slammed to the face hit you. So not fair and I DEFINITELY want more- RIGHT NOW!
There wasn't a lot heart-pounding action, but there was definite flow. There was definite edge-of-your-seat-can't-stop-turning-pages attraction with this book. And I definitely can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
Recommendation: Middle grade/Young adult
Rating: Absolutely fantastic, a book that will definitely be kept and passed around to the youngsters in my life! (And probably even some adults)
This book was given to me, free, in exchange for my honest review.
Really? What are you waiting for, go get this book!!
Always Shine,
Starr K

Marked (Eternal Guardians (Love Spell)) ReviewI certainly don't want to discount the three star ratings I read, but I had to chuckle, because I question the attention span while they were reading this book. One person said our hero belongs to a group of guardians that save humans and that is not the case. Another said they didn't understand how a secret got out because only the king should have known about it and that was also not the case. My point being, if you're concerned there are plot inconsistencies, there really aren't. This is a book that is establishing a mythos interweaved with Greek mythology and a cast of characters for an Eternal Guardians series and I can already guess the romantic pairing the next two books will be about. Ms. Naughton has efficiently penned a crisp, succint, and short book to lay the foundation of what's to come and I imagine there will be a lot of recurring characters that we'll be able to track and follow in the years to come.
Theron is the leader of the Argonauts, a group of guardians who are responsible for protecting their realm and Argoleans from the threats of the Underworld. Theron is the strongest of these guardians being a direct descendant from Heracles or Hercules of modern day. He is engaged to Isadora, the kings daughter to help her rule since her health is failing and there is an increasing threat from their council that the guardians are no longer needed. Should that happen, they will become vulnerable to their nemesis, Atalantia, from the Underwold who swears to destroy them. Although he does not love Isadora and she does not love him, they agree to do what they must to help save their people, but Theron soon discovers that Isadora is dying and the king informs him that in order to save her life, he must fulfill a legendary prophecy. This prophecy is that Isadora was born one half of a whole and that the king has another half, a human daughter, bearing an identical mark to Isadora's. When they are brought together, this other woman will complete and make Isadora whole again, and the other will die. Theron is sent through the portal to the human world to find her, only he may have already met her and was immediately attracted to her.
Acacia (Casey) Simopoulos, unbeknownst to herself, is the daughter of the king of Argoleas. She's leading a fairly normal human life but finds herself disconnected from her world. When she meets Theron, she feels an enigmatic attraction to him which turns out to be something much stronger. Casey is actually Theron's soulmate. An there in lies the potential greek tradgedy of the story. Theron has only one soulmate in his very long life and the irony is, it's his responsibility to sacrifice his soulmate for the good of his people.
As the story unfolds, an interesting and secretive group of characters are introduced that must battle the daemons (think demons from hell) and be manipulated by the Greek Gods. If you're a fan of Greek mythology, there's an unsettling and lascivious spin to the alleged abduction of Persephone and the relationship between her and Hades is disturbing, if only because she was once the God of innocence, but this book is sexy in its own right. At first, I thought the relationship was moving way to fast and Casey seemed a doormat doing whatever Theron said, but she managed to pull out of that enchantment just in time. This was a very fast read, and well written, however I can't say that I'm wasting away for the sequel. First books are always hard because there's so much groundwork to cover which is why I went with a four star, even though it was under 300 pages, but I didn't really feel invested in any characters with the exception to Nick (who I'd pair up with Isadora) who's not next in the series but soon will be. He's certainly the most intriguing and clearly has the biggest secret.Marked (Eternal Guardians (Love Spell)) Overview

Under His Spell (My Boyfriend Is a Monster) ReviewSo far I've found that this series is sort of hit or miss. For every volume that's absolutely great (My Boyfriend Bites), there's a volume that's somewhat mediocre. This volume falls under the mediocre category.
One of the most distracting aspects of this story really had to be the artwork. The quality of it just wasn't very consistent. On one page it would be very well done and on the next you'd see proportions that just weren't very realistic or feasible. There was one panel where our heroine Bethany was giving a solid kick to one of our villains and her leg and foot seemed to be unnaturally twisted. It made it look a little malformed, as if she'd broken it. The only thing about the artwork that seemed to stick to the same level of quality was the backgrounds, which were generally very well illustrated. This was just really disappointing to see since one thing the previous volumes did have in common was some decent artwork. I just couldn't help but think that the artist's work detracted from the story.
I can't blame everything on the artist, however. The basic gist of the storyline is decent. Girl meets fae boy. (I'd consider this a spoiler except the cover pretty much shows that he's a faerie.) Despite this being a pretty common story element, there's a lot you can do with this and I can't help but think that the delivery felt a little flat. I never really felt like the characters came to life for me and to be honest, neither did the chemistry between our lead characters.
There are some nice things about this volume, such as the section of the book that was in full color. It was a smart move and it did pay off well. It was one of the better sections of the book story and art wise. Parts of this book showed me that this really wanted to be a better story than what it was and I wish that it could have been.
If you're looking to read this, I'd recommend getting it from the library. This just wasn't one of the strongest offerings in the MBIAM series. Read it first via the library and then decide if you want to buy it for further re-readings or save up and wait on the next book in the series.(ARC provided by Netgalley)Under His Spell (My Boyfriend Is a Monster) Overview

The Spell (Big Bad Wolf) ReviewI really enjoyed this book but highly recommend reading the first two before diving into this one. There were quite a few "oh NO, that did not just happen" & lots of "WOW's". I was really looking forward to these two characters getting together & was not disappointed; I even liked and giggled at the side relationships. There are a lot of twists and turns which kept me on edge and the author is quite a tease with her intro into the next book. Really, how can she do that to us ;-) I recommend this book; it is a good read and very entertaining. I'm excited for the next installment to come out!The Spell (Big Bad Wolf) Overview
