The World's Tragedy ReviewThis is a play written by Aleister Crowley that was never put into production. I was a theater student back in high school and I would say compared to more mainstream stuff like Shakspear this holds up surprisingly well as the writer, prophet Crowley, was an intelligent and charismatic man and a master of the English language. It is one of the worst stabs at Christianity ever penned. Crowley is somewhere between a mainstream literary genius and a legitimate psychopath. But after a lot of reading and research it makes me wonder if Crowley is really nothing more than hip and clever. If you're seriously interested in the occult the best source is Aleister Crowley- he didn't care as much whether or not he was so cool and what people thought of him and ironicly he ended up becoming an icon. The World's Tragedy Overview

Liber Null & Psychonaut: An Introduction to Chaos Magic ReviewIf you are new to the writings of Peter Carroll you should read this book first. It is the result of a tremendous effort to clarify the often confusing and unecessarily complicated writings of the past. In this day and age it is no longer necessary to withold this information or to write about it in "code".
Carroll presents his information in a clear, rational and pragmatic way. Readers who have read his later books will notice that some of the theories presented here have become dated, which is only natural considering that the book was written over twenty years ago and that the development of magical theory and practice has progressed since then. In spite of this, it is important to familiarize oneself with the information presented here as it gives a solid foundation for understanding the basic priciples and techniques that his later, more advanced books only touch upon briefly. For example the book has the clearest system for attaining proper mind control which is absolutely necessary for more advanced work. It also explains the different methods of going into trance as well as the procedures for creating personalized sigils or encoded desires.
The second part of the book entitled Psychonaut (great word by the way) consists of essays on a variety of topics related to the subject at hand: The use of psychoactive substances in ritual, different models for explaining magical phenomenon, etc.
In a way, I tend to regard this book as a successful clarification of what Crowley and Spare tried to say in their confusing and long-winded fasion.Liber Null & Psychonaut: An Introduction to Chaos Magic Overview

777 And Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley: Including Gematria & Sepher Sephiroth ReviewLet me start this review off with a disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of Aleister Crowley. Crowley was a colossal egotist who brought disharmony and conflict everywhere that he went, who was despised by nearly everybody who knew him well, and whose reputation was only later rehabilitated by associates who were reaping a financial profit from Crowley's collected writings; Crowley was a drug addict, with all of the chaos and upheavals that this lifestyle brings into a person's life, and despite Crowley's pontification about the will he ultimately surrendered his own will to the dread god Opium; Crowley took serious and irrevocable oaths to several Occult orders, seldom staying long enough to be fully initiated into their higher mysteries, and repeatedly violating these solemn oaths by publishing whatever secrets happened to be entrusted to him; Crowley was a charlatan and a fraud, the kind of person who would fake a mountaineering expedition in Mexico in order to bilk his backers out of their sponorship money, as he was once caught red-handed doing by a Mexican newspaper... it just makes you doubt the veracity of Crowley's prophecies, particularly prophecies in which Crowley was to be the sole voice of authority, and especially considering that this status provided Crowley with a meager trickle of income for the remaining days of his miserable life. Crowley simply was not credible as a prophet or as a supposedly "enlightened" human being. This is not a man that I would emulate spiritually, certainly not somebody that I would turn to for advice or guidance, and probably not somebody that I would even want to know or be associated with. The bottom line is that you wouldn't take an estimate from this guy to fix your plumbing or paint your house, yet thousands of people around the world revere Crowley as some sort of demigod! It's sad, and it speaks to how desperate the West is for "spiritual truth," but in my opinion Crowley would have been entirely forgotten by now if he hadn't generated so much controversy and notoriety during his own lifetime.
That said, I'll be the first to admit that '777' is clearly one of the best works of its kind, and rightly merits a place of honor on every occultist's bookshelf. '777' is really a compilation of three of Crowley's published works on Qabalism, and each deserves some discussion on its own merits:
The first chapter or book in '777' is an early essay on Gematria, the Qabalistic art or science of rendering words into numbers and deriving meaning from the result. To give Crowley his due, the man clearly knew his way around Hebrew and Greek Gematria, and this essay contains several examples of Crowley's best Qabalistic work, marred perhaps by Crowley's tendency to obfuscate his meaning when he wanted to sound mysterious. Unfortunately, this defect is characteristic of Crowley's writing, and '777' is replete with this intriguing mumbo-jumbo. There are also several editorial errors which have apparently passed through several successive editions of '777' without notice (one blatant example is the lengthy quotation from Mathers, which lists a first example and a third example, but oddly omits the second example from Mathers' original). Still, this essay on Gematria is one of only a handful of clear, concise introductions to the subject, and Crowley covers the topic with his usual wit and keen insight.
The next chapter in '777' is really the heart and soul of the entire volume. Originally published by itself as 'Liber 777,' this chapter contains page after page of Qabalistic associations and attributions. Although this sort of stuff filled the hand-scribbled grimoires of magicians and Qabalists in the Middle Ages, there haven't been many reliable works of this sort published anywhere in modern times, making 'Liber 777' a real gem. Most of the attributions given in 'Liber 777' probably came directly from Allan Bennett, Crowley's mentor in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, who was known to have compiled his own list of Qabalistic attributions before leaving England for health reasons. Dion Fortune, in "The Mystical Qabalah," confirmed that many of the attributions listed in 'Liber 777' had previously circulated among initiates of the Golden Dawn, and for this reason it can be assumed that much of this material was presented to Crowley when he joined the Order. Crowley clearly enlarged and expanded upon Bennett's work, but some of his attributions are suspect-- and as Fortune went on to point out in her book, many of Crowley's additions to this material are completely at odds with other attributions under the Golden Dawn system. It's almost as if Crowley, in an effort to expand on whatever material had been entrusted to him, compulsively meddled with that material without ever bothering to clearly identify or source any of his contributions. Still, Crowley's list of Qabalistic attributions is the only surviving version to have survived the Golden Dawn's demise, and occultists are indebted to him for preserving this material for posterity. For this reason 'LIBER 777' is an invaluable resource, and one that no occultist should be without!
The final chapter of '777,' SEPHER SEPHIROTH, is a Qabalistic encyclopedia started by Allan Bennett and expanded by Crowley and others throughtout the course of Crowley's life. Crowley's high esteem for Bennett is obvious in that he gave him full credit for authoring the document, instead of following his usual modus operani and claiming sole authorship for himself! Unlike most encylopedias, which list entries in alphabetical order, SEPHER SEPHIROTH arranges its entries in numerological order-- making this book a really handy reference for anybody interested in Gematria. It's a simple matter to render the Gematria value of any Hebrew or Greek word, and then consult SEPHER SEPHIROTH for other words and phrases with the same value. A word of caution, though-- because it was a group project spanning many years, SEPHER SEPHIROTH lacks any sense of focus or editorial consistency. Different dialects of Hebrew are mixed haphazardly throughout the work, the spelling is inconsistent, and several entries appear to be contradictory upon closer examination. (Indeed, Crowley's editors even apologize for their inability to define some entries, stating that the origin and exact meanings of some 'words' had been lost due to carelessness on Crowley's part!). SEPHER SEPHIROTH is a great reference, and a definite time-saver, but I wouldn't rely upon its authority too heavily! I refer to this part of '777' fairly often, but I always cross-reference Crowley's work with STRONG'S CONCORDANCE or another reliable reference before taking it to heart.
I know that, in some occult circles, it's almost an act of heresy to criticize Aleister Crowley. I think that Crowley, ever the iconoclastic rabble-rouser, would have been amused with the sort of hallowed iconic reverence that some people hold him in today. In any case, Crowley reached a sort of zenith with '777,' a lovely reference work that makes a useful addition to any occult library. Taken for what it is, '777' is sort of like having a set of Cliff notes on Qabalistic attributions-- useful, perhaps, for gaining a surface understanding of the subject matter, and valuable as a quick reference, but hardly authoritative on its own. I refer to my own copy several times a week, and I'd strongly recommend '777' to any practicing Qabalist.777 And Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley: Including Gematria & Sepher Sephiroth Overview

Real Magic: An Introductory Treatise on the Basic Principles of Yellow Magic ReviewNot stage magic, but REAL MAGIC. Isaac Bonewitz graduated from Cal Berkeley in 1970 with a BA in magic and thaumaturgy. This book is not a grimoire of arcane spells and occult symbols. No recipes calling for "eye of Newt" will be found within. This is a systematic attempt to study, categorize, and perhaps even explain the phenomena of magic, from ESP to Eastern ritual.
Bonewitz does not write a superstitious text. He claims "I am not anti-scientific... What I have objected to is the modern worship of science as an infallible source of truth, endowed with 'supernatural' powers over mortal men."
Early on, Bonewitz describes laws of magic, gleaned from multiple cultures and magical system. These include relatively obvious ideas, such as the Law of Knowledge (Knowledge is power & Know thyself) and esoteric ones, like the Law of True Falsehoods (If it's a paradox, it's probably true).
He considers parapsychology, doing a useful job of considering some phenomena, and a more dubious job of trying to explain them. Nevertheless, this chapter does a coherent job of postulating why "mainstream" science does not verify parapsychological claims.
One of the most important chapters considers the difference between "Black" and "White" magic. "The whole idea of White as Good and Black as Evil is purely the result of cultural bigotries." (p. 95) While magic, as any other tool, can be ethical or unethical, ethics are not a matter of "light" or "dark."
His most practical chapter is the one entitled Fundamental Patterns of Ritual. "The best spells and rituals are modern ones, written by yourself and designed to affect you personally, with your twentieth-century mind." (p. 162)
The book has a good, but dated bibliography.
What use is it? It's a good introduction to contemporary magical practice, as opposed to the "Do this spell this way because the ancients (or some other authority) did it this way." Bonewitz explains why things might work and what type of an approach might be useful to adopt. It's good reading for the magic practitioner. It complements the various magical system books available (How to be a Witch in 13 Easy Lessons) as well as the more scholarly anthropological texts (such as Eliade's The Sacred and the Profane, which I have also reviewed). It's a laudatory attempt to move beyond the works of Aleister Crowley, Scott Cunningham, and Janet & Stewart Farrar.

What You Should Know About The Golden Dawn ReviewThis is a great book, except for the nonsense and recruitment stuff found at the end. At a certain point, Regardie's writing ends and there are several essays written by people defending their organization (though it does not seem very easy to defend after reading what really happened to the Order of the Golden Dawn). If you are wondering why the same book written by Regardie from '82 or '72 is completely different from the edited and annotated version from '94 or 2004; then this book should explain what happened. After his death in '84 certain publishers began to butcher this great man's work. "The Tree of Life" from after the year 2000, for example is filled with illustrations not even found in the original, weird illustrations (earlier editions after '84 are liable to have similar corruptions, unless of course you try to get a solid Weiser edition).
This is a great book and should be read by anyone interested in the subject or the OGD and its history. What You Should Know About The Golden Dawn Overview

Aleister Crowley's Illustrated Goetia Review`What Goetia is - is the releasing of yourself from your won fears and illusions by direct confrontation.' (pg 10)
According to tradition, the Goetia is the first book in the Lemegaton attributed to Solomon the King, though likely compiled by a host of authors. Goetic evocation deals with the summoning of the seventy-two lesser spirits and demons. In this edition, based on Crowley's Goetia, DuQuette and Hyatt strip away all unnecessary trappings and cut through most of the `fooltraps' designed to dissuade less astute practitioners.
Traditionally, Goetic evocation calls for strict observance of many details, such as the correct ritual hours, lengthy calls, and an inordinate amount of ceremonial trappings. The authors tell the reader what one can safely do away with, and what can be altered as preference dictates. However, there are some items that the authors do believe are required for the successful (and safer) evocation of the Goetic spirits, including a list of `must haves' with detailed explanations and personal anecdotes as to why they are necessary. Noting `that there is absolutely no necessity (nor particular advantage) to blindly conforming with the Conjuration scripts of the ancient texts. The Spirits are no more impressed of you say "thee" and "thine" than they are if you say "you" and "yours".' (pg 45)
Goetic spirits `will work for anyone who knows how to use them. This is one of the horrors people attribute to Goetic workings. You "don't have to be respectable" for Goetia to work for you. Unlike other magical workings there is no implication that the operator has to be "good" and "holy" to achieve results. This idea in itself violates our model of "right" and "wrong", "just" and "unjust". In the Goetic world like in the real world the "bad" can and do prosper. Thus our belief in the moral orders of the Universe appears violated by the simple existence of Spirits who will do the bidding of anyone.' (pg 14)
Though they will work for anyone, the authors caution that one `must be completely convinced that your demands are absolutely justified. (And don't think we are invoking the great demon "morality" here. An unnecessary motive is an unworthy motive - pure and simple). When you are truly justified in your demands then you have the momentum of the entire universe behind you.' (pg 37)
Further cautioning and confirming that `yes, they are dangerous,' DuQuette and Hyatt explain that `while they remain unmastered they can surface unbidden and wreak all havoc modern psychology blames on "things hidden in the subconscious mind".' (pg 24) As well as a few delightfully thrilling personal anecdotes.
There are a few changes, namely the elimination of lengthy calls in preference for Thelemic invocations from Liber Samech by Crowley, Enochian calls, etc. As well, `for the convenience of the modern reader' the authors have translated information regarding each of the seventy-two Goetic spirits into modern understanding and Crowleyan associations, and `where obvious, returned certain Spirits to their original gender.' (pg 43)
Sketches accompany each of the seventy-two spirits, illustrated by artist-clairvoyant David P. Wilson, a practicing Goetic magickian. `Over a period of 15 years, he has evoked each of the Spirits at least once...But it is very important for you to remember that, because no two people have the same visual-emotional "vocabulary", the images of the Goetic universe will be unique to each of us.' The authors caution the reader not to `think that these sketches are what you must see when evoking any particular Spirit,' instead explaining that `they are intended to serve only as springboards to your imagination.' (pg 72)
Though with such a short section on sex magick, I don't know that it really deserves the `Sexual Evocation' subtitle as there are really only a few pages on it at the rear of the text.
Aimed at those actually interested in actually practicing magick rather than simply reading about it, it gives unambiguous description of what tools are required and the methods of evocation and, briefly, of sexual invocation, cutting through the superfluous and get right to what is necessary. An excellent introduction to Goetic magick as Crowley practiced it.Aleister Crowley's Illustrated Goetia Overview

Liber Kaos ReviewLiber Kaos is definately not a good book for someone new in chaos magic. Read "Condensed Chaos" by Phil Hine if you are a neophyte. Even though it does introduce key ideas about chaos magic Peter Carrol progresses rather quickly into more advanced concepts, that combined with large amounts of pesonal dogmatism makes it unsuitable for the newcomer.
As an advanced chaos mage you will clash with Carrol's ideas. The book from the beginning contains hard to agree with dogmatism. Within the dogmatism are some great theories and ideas but it is up to the reader to weave through it. Even though Peter Carrol in the father of chaos magic (with Austin Osman Spare being the grandfather) he suffers from what most authors about magic suffer from. Presenting their beliefs as universal truths.
Not all is negative though. Within his book there is a plentiful of concepts that you might or might not decide to include in your toybox. Moreover its a book that must be in your library since Peter Carrol is the first to give chaos magic a name and he is the one that started it all.
Assume nothing.Liber Kaos Overview

The Book of Splendours: The Inner Mysteries of Qabalism ReviewThis book is not for those who do not already have a strong foundation in the Hermetic Western Tradition, Kabballah, Alchemy, etc. This book really is for those who understand the Kabballah. Levi speaks in symbols, even when it appears to be mundane words. This is what confuses students. To understand Kabballah, one needs guidance, patience, humility...Not this pompous western attitude that we can evoke the most powerful demons of the abysmal realms and place them in our servitude! Woh to us, the lost culture... Study yourself, apply this book to yourself. Understand why it is that Levi would talk about the Masonic Legends, how does it apply to you? The three traitors of Hiram, what are their significance in you? Kabballah is an extensive science...if it is not understood, it is criticized, like in many of the other comentaries. Buy this book, be patient with it, take your time and study other books as supplementary material-more importantly, study Gnosis, the foundation of all Western Esoteric Traditions. Study the books of Samael Aun Weor as supplementary material, he wrote over 75 books on similar subjects! The Book of Splendours: The Inner Mysteries of Qabalism Overview

Decoding the Enochian Secrets: God's Most Holy Book to Mankind as Received by Dr. John Dee from Angelic Messengers ReviewLet me first say, I own about 95% of the books in print on Enochian Magic, and have been practicing for many years.
I was quite excited when reading the author's previous book when he promised reveal the 'true' Book of Enoch for the first time in this present volume.
And I must say, I'm a bit disappointed.
The 'revelation' is a series of low resolution pictures of John Dee's manuscripts!
Without a high powered magnifying glass, the scans provided are largely useless; if you want to see what Dee's manuscripts look like, you can see them for free and in much higher quality here: http://www.themagickalreview.org/enochian/mss/
HOWEVER
For Enochian theoreticians and purists like myself, the content of the first part of the book is still valuable, such as comparing the apocryphal Book of Enoch to the tables John Dee received; as is reading the author's argument for his particular layout of the tables.
So if you are *serious* about Enochian this book is valuable; if you aren't, go look at the scans linked above (you'll need to anyway, if you want to understand what the Author is describing!)Decoding the Enochian Secrets: God's Most Holy Book to Mankind as Received by Dr. John Dee from Angelic Messengers Overview

Kabbalah, Magic & the Great Work of Self Transformation: A Complete Course ReviewIn his very first published book, Lyam Thomas Christopher provides a comprehensive system of self-transformation based on the Golden Dawn system which uses the Kabalistic Tree of Life as a model for spiritual awakening. The book provides a complete study and training course into Western Magic and Mysticism which, if followed properly, can lead to an enlightened state of awareness of ones existence where happiness can be derived not from material gain or social status but from the knowledge and conversation with ones Higher Self.
The very first chapter of this book provides a very good argument for the need for self-transformation and the search for spiritual enlightenment. The author shows that even with our advanced technologies, scientific advancement, longer life-span, and modern comforts there is much more suffering and misery in our world and we are even more confused about our purpose and place within the Universe. The author proposes that the reason for this unhappiness is that we have built our world around the survivalist mentality where men and women buy prosperity. We have shunned away our spiritual birthright where imagination flourishes where we can, as mortal men, can achieve realization of our immortality in exchange for the material comforts of the modern world which are all too often fleeting and temporary.
The author puts a lot of emphasis on the importance of developing a new kind of existence that rises above the survivalist mindset bent on the prestige and comfort of gaining status in our miserable and confused society. The recommended practical work provided in this book allows the student to learn and become consciously aware about the inner workings of the human psyche. This allows the student to develop an intimate relationship with his/her lower and animalistic nature not to destroy or banish it but to make it subject under the authority of the Higher and Immortal self so one can achieve happiness not in the afterlife but in the here and now within ourselves - the true Heaven on Earth.
The book offers a new perspective and approach in spiritual development within the Western Mystery Tradition. The work to be undertaken is divided into various grades or levels identical to the traditional grade system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn from which a good portion of the teachings and practices are taken from. In each grade the author prescribes specific exercises, rituals, and assignments to be performed for a given period of time which can last anywhere between 6 months to 1 year. When done with sincerity and diligence the work will cause noticeable and significant life changes.
The author is very eloquent yet unpretentious and humble. Lyam Christopher has the ability to articulate complex psychological and spiritual concepts that can be easily understood by anyone. This book is highly recommended for beginners and advanced practitioners of magic and those who are searching for a path to enlightenment that does not require them to sell all their belongings and live in the mountains eating berries or subjecting themselves to the authority of some self-professed guru. This book should be part of every practicing magician's bookshelf.Kabbalah, Magic & the Great Work of Self Transformation: A Complete Course Overview

High Magic: Theory & Practice ReviewWith his practical, non-dogmatic, occasionally iconoclastic approach to the Black Arts, as well as being one of Europe's best known practical magicians and contemporary occult authors with more than twenty-five books to his credit, Belgium-based Frater U.D. is the founder of "Pragmatic Magic" and "Ice Magic", and the author of High Magick: Theory & Practice. This comprehensive and thoroughly "reader friendly" introduction to magical practices will provide even the most novice inquiry with a sold, methodical foundation for furthering their personal studies. Rather than a mere compendium of potions and spells, High Magick focuses upon explaining the basic laws governing magic, with an emphasis on what it means to be a "good" magician. With an impressive emphasis on self-discipline and the need for training the practitioner's own will, High Magick covers all of the major facets of high magick including "The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram", sigil magick, ritual magick, visualization, the "Greater Ritual of the Pentagram", planetary magick, tools of the magician, talisman work, mantra magick, money magick, magickal paradigms, chaos and cyber magick. Enhanced with practical exercises at the end of each informed and informative chapter, High Magick: Theory & Practice should be considered required reading for anyone wanting to study the metaphysical and magical arts of the occult. Also very highly recommended is Frater U.D.'s previous work published by Llewellyn Publications, Secrets of Western Sex Magic: A Practical Handbook for Men and Women (15767187064, $17.95).

Alchemy and Golden Dawn Ritual - The Golden Dawn Alchemy Series 3 ReviewI was pleased to read this book by Pat. I feel Pat does a great job explaining the Golden Dawn grade work in relation to the process of Alchemy. I don't agree with some details, but that is minor compared to the amount that I learned from this book. Great job Pat.Alchemy and Golden Dawn Ritual - The Golden Dawn Alchemy Series 3 Overview

Kissing the Limitless: Deep Magic and the Great Work of Transforming Yourself and the World ReviewIf you've read Thorn's first book - this is a totally different context and perspective. Anyone of any belief path that has an open mind and heart will find insights and inspiration from this book.
Thorn taught me to not "judge a book" by it's cover. Years ago I wrestled with purchasing her book because her personal appearance was that of a "wild woman" (laugh). Her writing drew me in and after months of avoiding purchasing her book, curiousity got the best of me.
This book is so filled with what I would call "Unlimited" perspectives - I call it POTU approved (Path of the Unlimited), my own brand of looking at life and Spirituality.
She shares her diverse life experiences with religions, meaning and spirituality - her path is probably similiar to many who are seeking and awakening. She doesn't polorize you to her point of view - instead she inspires you to find out more about YOU and your relationship with the divine.
This book belongs on any shelf in the book store that discusses religion, beliefs and spirituality.
I do have one complaint. It isn't available in hardcover. This is infomation that I would purchase in leather bound hardcover and special paper so that it could be part of my library that I pass on to future generations.
Many books are formulas and theories about connecting with the Divine; many are inspirational stories about who we "wish" we could connect with the Divine. This book is written by a fellow human being that lives that connection moment by moment, day by day. For me it was - recognition of another person who understands.
If you've studied world religions, both modern and ancient from around the world you'll recognize some blending of beautiful elements and practices.
The most beautiful "religion" I have ever seen is ancient, pre-Hatian influence Huna (a modern name for it) - from Hawaii, paradise lost, being reclaimed. "Kissing the Limitless" - brings the best of what is ancient and makes it modern without any limitations or complicated/bizzzare processes.

Foundations of High Magick: The Magical Philosophy ReviewActually, one of the three most treasured, the others being the "Sword and the Serpent" and "Mysteria Magica", representing the (hopefully) forthcoming volumes 2 and 3 of the "Magical Philosophy" series of which this is the first.
Almost everything concievable is explained thoroughly in these books, and the first volume is perhaps the most illuminating. Unlike other texts which simply say "this is so", Denning and Phillips literally walk you through the reasons behind various magical correspondences on the Tree of Life (the theories presented here are basically Kabalistic ones, with just a light amount of Enochian). Ever wonder why the astrological signs are associated with certain paths on the Tree, and certian Tarot cards associated with the signs/paths, as well? Denning and Phillips lay it out for you, step by step, so that you come away with an understanding that won't fade as time goes by.
When I first purchased these volumes back in 1991, I had almost no background in magick whatsoever. While the latter two volumes may indeed be a bit advanced, the first should be required reading for any magickal study (or even a simple mystical study of the Tree of Life). By the end of the first volume, the latter two will no longer be out of the reach of your comprehension.
Highly, highly recommended works. For that matter, everything by either author meets a similarly high standard. If it's by Denning and Phillips, read it!Foundations of High Magick: The Magical Philosophy Overview

Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current ReviewHands On Chaos Magic is a strange book. Part grimoire, part self-initiation, moreso than anything else, the book is a tour through the underpinnings of magic. Don't mistake a "tour" for a quick or trivial read - this book is _dense_ - dense with ideas, exercises and enthusiasm. Nearly everything one needs for a rewarding magical practice is inside:
Calming/medidation
Trance-Generation
Sorcery
Invocation
Evocation (the section on servitor creation is particularly excellent)
And Psychology? In a magick book!? Fortunately, unlike some attempts to meld psycholgy (as a discipline) into magick, Andrieh uses an understanding of how the mind works to help hack rituals, etc. making them simpler and more effective.
Divination, unfortuantely, gets a "you should totally learn this...somewhere else." It would have been welcome to see Andrieh's spin on this topic, at least giving it a chapter with an exercise or two especially as many of the later exercises incorporate divination.
The book is broken into a series of short chapters with exercises (sometimes referred to as "games") sprinkled throughout. The exercises range from some "training" exercises to more advanced workings and rituals. Some are solo, some meant for groups, They're well thought out and more often than not...fun.
That fun can be deceptive - the rituals are fun, yes, but often serious and require honesty and intensity from the magician. Fortunately, the book is paced well, with the short chapters providing a well-thought out and comprehensive approach to building skills that will enhance the later rituals.
As with most chaos magic books, there is no overarching mythology in the book - the concepts are applicable to any tradition. The lack of such a mythology may be offputting for those who like/expect that sort of stuff, but that same freedom lets the concepts and techniques fit right into any practice that you may currently be undertaking, whether just starting out or if you're looking for a new way of looking at the old favorites.
Highly recommended.Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current Overview

The Way of the Crucible ReviewTrue alchemists are a rarity in our modern world, and even more rarely are they present in the public eye. With his first book, "Real Alchemy", and now this one, Bartlett provides us with knowledge that is hard to find yet absolutely essential for those of us curious about the ancient art of alchemy. If you have such a curiosity I HIGHLY recommend both of Bartlett's books. The Way of the Crucible Overview

Enochian Vision Magick: An Introduction and Practical Guide to the Magick of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley ReviewI was hesitant to write this review but felt I owed it to Lon, whom I respect greatly, to do so.
I got into a good law school because of my work with the planetary seniors of the air tablet, using the methods found in this book. Throughout my five-year formal work with ceremonial magick, vision has not been one of my stronger talents. That didn't pose a problem once I began working with the Dee material revived by and presented in "Enochian Vision Magick."
To be sure, I've always gotten relatively spectacular effects working with anything Enochian, but what sets this material apart from other Enochian material--most of which has been filtered through my native Golden Dawn tradition--is its sense of completeness, coherency, and you might even say its more "theurgic" flavor. (I think the latter has a lot to do with the two former.) The mantras at the start of each operation heighten me in the same way and with the same potency as does much of Mantrayana I've worked with, and that's saying a bit.
Thus, my work with the aforementioned seniors was hardly "thaumaturgy" in the pejorative sense of the word: I communed with these seniors, I spoke with them, and they gave me surprisingly precise and thorough advice on how to prepare for the LSAT and, eventually, for law school itself, which I am excited to begin this coming year. Without a doubt, my work with these seniors has made me a better human being, and that is really the point of our Great Work.
I find Lon's book satisfying on multiple levels, but most of all it just WORKS, and it works in a way that will support the work of someone who isn't just interested in magickal bells and whistles (though those are nice too), but who is interested in a strong toolset that will support the path of initiation. Actually, I should qualify this by saying that the Enochian "angels" will show off if you want them to. But each planetary air senior with whom I worked emphasized the same message: The reason why they enjoyed working with me was because I wasn't doing this just for me, but for a greater vision of accomplishing the Great Work, of which they are *also* a part. Thus the work was about sharing, not about appeasement.
That I am able to attribute such loftiness to Enochian magick should not be a surprise when we consider that John Dee was trying almost ridiculously hard to get in touch with God. I'm not a Renaissance Christian, but I do believe that we've inherited in our culture a tragic dualistic attitude toward the universe around us, such that magick seems to be for most people a forceful manipulation of "dead" matter. I think my Golden Dawn predecessors were victim to this in many respects; much of what they cobbled together in the GD work had the flavor of lifeless "technology," which isn't exactly wrong, it's just... myopic. I believe we must mend this dualistic attitude, or at least revise it. The Work supported by and augmented by "Enochian Vision Magick" brings us back to a place where the universe is alive and vibrant and we share in that life and light. Visionary magick begets communion with spirits, which begets a deeper connection to our cosmos and in turn serves as an antidote to short-sighted satisfaction.Enochian Vision Magick: An Introduction and Practical Guide to the Magick of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley Overview

Art and Practice of Geomancy, The: Divination, Magic, and Earth Wisdom of the Renaissance ReviewJohn Michael Greer, one of our leading esoteric authors, has done it again! The Art and Practice of Geomancy is definitely the best introduction to the traditional Western divinatory art of geomancy.
Literally "earth divination" this lost prophetic art has been confused with the Chinese practice of Feng Shui which concerns itself with esoteric alignment and the orientation of architecture and landscape. Geomancy, which has its roots in North Africa and the Middle East, was a popular form of divination in the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. And no wonder! It is easier to learn than traditional horary astrology and gives almost as precise answers, allowing the practitioner to make accurate predictions of the future on a whole variety of questions.
Greer explains the history and philosophy of geomancy, then introduces the 16 geomantic figures, analogous to the 64 hexagrams of the I ching. Greer also explains the use of the geomantic shield and 12 houses, borrowed from traditional astrology, which are the main techniques in geomancy. Greer also delves into more advanced techniques and gives many illuminating examples. Finally, Greer also gives an account of the use of geomancy for magical and meditative practice.
While earlier esoteric movements like the Golden Dawn have tried to use geomancy, their exposition was limited and often confusing. Greer has not only gone back to the original medieval and Renaissance sources, but has mastered the actual practice of geomantic prediction. As always his writing is clear and lucid, giving straightforward and easy to follow explanations even on difficult points. Anyone interested in divination and traditional Western esotericism will benefit from this excellent manual of geomantic theory and practice. Highly recommended!Art and Practice of Geomancy, The: Divination, Magic, and Earth Wisdom of the Renaissance Overview
