The Book of Shadows : The Unofficial Charmed Companion ReviewTo the practitioners of witchcraft and the followers of the religion known as Wicca, the phrase "Book of Shadows" refers to a journal of sorts. Traditionally, a "Book of Shadows" is a blank book that is gradually filled up with spells, meditations, ideas and notes on "The Craft". The creators and writers of the tv show "Charmed" use "The Book of Shadows as more of a spell book, but also as a way for the Halliwell sisters to grasp how they came to be endowed with special powers and how their ancestral female family members dealt with the supernatural. Author N.E. Genge combines these ideas to make a fun and knowledge-filled book. Although billed as "The Unofficial `Charmed' Companion", this is no lightweight script adaptation or silly "Behind the Scenes" look at what Alyssa Milano likes to eat for breakfast. Instead, the first section concentrates on what a beginner or teen witch needs to have as she takes the first steps on her path of learning. The first chapter entitled "The Witches Chest", touches upon the meaning and power of many different items-herbs, gems and crystals, even everyday stuff like paper and ink. Did you know you could use hair ribbons to bind people or parts of a spell together? The second chapter, "The Witches Place", deals more with the actual altar, the private area where a witch works. Sacred items such as the athame and cauldron and their various uses in spell craft are explained. Some beginning spells are also given, like ones to protect a house and to make you or a friend more lovable. But Genge is definitely all about the learning--trying to give just a taste of arcane knowledge to the readers. The point is made many times that a teen or someone who only recently got interested in witchcraft and Wicca (especially someone who heard about it on "Charmed") needs to explore, to do research, rather than rush in and experiment with things they don't understand. Throughout these lessons, there are little notes about the show, as well as about different terms used, kind of like Wicca "Pop-Up Video" facts. Genge also poses questions for the young witch to ponder as she learns more about herself and the old ways. The second section of the book is a detailed guide to the series "Charmed". Genge gives a key to each episode, including its title, guest stars and writers, as well as a short plot synopsis of each. Then the author does something interesting-asks the reader to be an "Observant Witch". "Magical Notes" are given on the supernatural significance of each episode, as well as what traditions are being explored and which stories came out of legends and myths. Readers are asked to view each show through eyes of someone who practices "The Craft" and try to hone their awareness of the many levels of the world. Again, questions are asked and ideas are brought up, as study points for the newly initiated. This "Book of Shadows" even goes so far as to have a section of bloopers where dedicated "Charmed" fans can see how close they truly are watching. It truly is a good starting off place for a teen interested in the finding out more about "That Old-Time Religion".The Book of Shadows : The Unofficial Charmed Companion Overview

Working With Fairies: Magick, Spells, Potions & Recipes to Attract & See Them ReviewI enjoyed this book, though I found the sub title a bit misleading about the book's contents. I was expecting to see page upon page of spells and charms but was pleasantly surprised by very thorough history lessons on many of The Wild Folk.
The eight chapters in the book contained a wealth of information of historical accounts of fairies from around the world. Where they live, what they do and how to obtain their help as well as avoid their ire comprised major portions of each chapter.
Chapters were divided into sections like The Other World, Devas and Dryads and Elementals. The last one was the most extensive filling about a third of the book with informational tidbits, poems, meditations, correspondences, and suggested rituals for each of the four Elemental Fae.
I have never been a big "fairy" person per se, but I found the historical accounts fascinating and well worth the read. The glossary in the back was a helpful addition to the book. Keeping track of who's who and what is often difficult in books like these. Having a well-formatted index with easy to read bold headings in the back made it easier to keep track of that.
In the chapter called Fairy Families, I especially liked the listing of the Muses and what their `specialty' was. This is something that I often wanted to know in the past but was unable to find the information as accessible as it is presented in this book. Information such as this is presented in a factual, straightforward manner. The author includes dates, places and names when possible as much of her source material came from historical accounts of `witch' trails.
The recipes included in the book are made with common ingredients for the most part, making it possible for those interested in deepening their relationships with fairies to try their hand at making them.
If you are interested in fairy lore, or want to include fairies as part of your practice, this is a good book with plenty to hold your interest.
W. Lyon Martin Author/Illustrator of "An Ordinary Girl, A Magical Child."Working With Fairies: Magick, Spells, Potions & Recipes to Attract & See Them OverviewFairies are mysterious and elusive creatures that inhabit an invisible realm-a realm that exists alongside the merely physical world we live in, a place the old Celts called the "Otherworld." Theirs is a kingdom where it is always summer, where the orchards bear fruit and flowers at the same time, and where death and old age are unknown. For the lucky few, these creatures are occasionally seen in the blink of an eye or on the edge of a dream, and their haunting voices heard on the wind through the lonely valleys and forests - for those who have ears to hear it.As elusive as they are, there have been tales of humans who have spent extended time with fairies-by walking inadvertently into the mist between two stones or by stepping accidentally into a fairy ring-and who have been taught by them to heal, make potions, and use spells.Sadly, as we humans have moved away from our close connection to the earth, we have also lost our link with the "wildfolk." The stories of them that persisted lost their awe-inspiring quality: in our feeble imaginations we have turned them into the cute Tinkerbells of popular nursery tales. But this is not a book about the imaginary creatures of storybooks: It is about real fairies, potent and awe-inspiring beings of earth, air, fire and water, of plant, stream, rock and place. Working With Fairies describes in detail the diverse world of the fairy, from house spirits, nature spirits, elementals, and devas, to personal fairy guardians and sweethearts. And it contains techniques to enable you to contact the fairy realm or "Otherworld," including:When, where and how to see fairies; Attraction techniques;Workings and Rituals to involve fairies;Dealing with the unwanted attentions of fairies;Guided meditations;Spells and potions to enable ‘the sight';Anna Franklin is the author of The Illustrated Fairy Encyclopaedia, The Fairy Ring, Fairy Lore, and Watercolor Fairies. She is well-known to fairy fans and readers of MBS books on both sides of the Atlantic. Her works have been translated into eight languages. Anna lives in a village in the English Midlands.

Enchantments: 200 Spells for Bath & Beauty Enhancement ReviewWhen I first skimmed through the book, I was going to give it 2 stars... It was not what I had expected it to be. I had expected it to be a book about spells in enhance or increase beauty, but in fact, it is mostly about spells using beauty products (such as soap, lotion, perfumes, etc.). I was rather disappointed at first. But, then I decided to read through it a little more thoroughly. It does include some recipes on beauty-enhancing spells and items (beauty soap, beauty perfume...). In addition to that, it explains how to make basic soap (but not from scratch!), lotions, perfume bland, massage oils, shampoos, conditioners, and other products. For anyone interested in both spellcraft and natural beauty products, I would definitely reccomend this book. Anyone looking for a get-ptretty-quick spell, don't bother with this, there's nothing like that in here. My final vote: 4 and a half starsEnchantments: 200 Spells for Bath & Beauty Enhancement Overview

Tears for Hesh (short story) (Beyond the Veil) ReviewWell written story. It has all the typical stuff you expect with a fantasy story: magic, evil wizard, slightly dim yet likeable wizard's helper, and dangerous potion components. It has a tragic ending, which is why this didn't get 5 stars.. I am one of those people who loves to see the bad guy get a taste of his own medicine, so the ending dissapointed me a little. Otherwise, good story!Tears for Hesh (short story) (Beyond the Veil) OverviewTears for Hesh is a short story of just over 3,200 words. Set in the world of The Guardian's Apprentice, this is the story of Hesh, a young man who works for a coniving, power-hungry wizard who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Hesh is a gentle giant, towering above others, but soft spoken and afflicted with a stammer when he gets nervous. Sent on an errand for his master, he ucovers a terrible secret and must face the consequences.

The Witchcraft Codex A Guide to Black Magic Practices, Spells, Curses and other information ReviewThis book describes itself as being intented for serious people only. The book leaves out vital information(symbols)and also has incomplete rituals. Then it goes on to talk down to people who would use black magic to harm others. Apparently they forgot the title of the book. The book does follow suite of old world witchcraft, but this particular book is incomplete. The Witchcraft Codex A Guide to Black Magic Practices, Spells, Curses and other information OverviewThis is for those, who are seriously interested in black magic.People with prejudices and the mob should stay away from here:they would only toddle in darkness and be highly indignant. The described black magic rituals are not without danger and are consequently unsuitable for people who are not mentally in good constitution.Take heed to follow all instructions the way they are described.Without the necessary precautions every ritual will turn to your disadvantage, confusion and total destruction. On the contrary, by following the instructions with precision, you will achieve a complete success in all your enterprises. Finally I have to mention that here nothing is written for the skeptic people and it will not help them.Black magic is deemed the selfish perversion of magical arts to destroy others, or for personal gain, but can be used for good intent. The conscious use of black magic rituals is for the adept only. A magician may summon the Devil or one of his demons and remain a white magician, so long as the purpose for the summoning is benevolent.Black magicians are usually those who made a pact with the Devil. They invoke diabolic and infernal powers by black magic rituals and spells.Beware to use this wisely as it has been blessed by a practitioner and is deemed for the use of good intent only.

Spells for Money and Wealth ReviewAngela Kaelin's Spells for Money and Wealth is an interesting work which describes ways in which magic can be used to help you pay for bills or turn the odds in your favor. It begins with a brief description of the differences between money and wealth, which I think is very important. She describes money as something you use in exchange for something else, and wealth as the things you acquire.
The book then describes how to make your own money and wealth talisman, which basically a small bag filled with herbs and rocks specific to what you desire. It then lists many dozens of herbs, oils, and gemstones and their association with certain types of wealth. For example, allspice and juniper berries are used for good luck in regard to business and so is malachite. The rest of it describes casting methods and components needed to perform a variety of spells relating to specific desires regarding money and wealth, such as job promotions, business ventures, and so on.
I approached this ebook from the perspective of someone with no prior knowledge to magic and found the work rather fascinating. I know some people would be disturbed by the subject matter, but the look inside these practices is really interesting and worth a read even if you don't intend to do any casting. The author writes quite clearly and describes the purpose of each spell in such a way that it doesn't feel glossed over like she's trying to sell you something.Spells for Money and Wealth OverviewPowerful money spells - no fluff! The Wicca Spellbook: A Witch's Collection of Wiccan Spells, Potions, and Recipes ReviewI bought this book in the early days of my interest in Wicca. At that point in time, I gobbled up anything with the mention of the word in the title, and in a small bookshop to my misfortune, this was it. I had quite a strong reaction to this book - and not a very positive one at that - and now I bet you are wondering what the heck it is about it that caused me to feel this way. I can sum it up in one word: hypocrisy. This is simply the most hypocritical "Wiccan" book I have ever discovered.
The book opens with an incredibly fluffy and feel-good description of Wicca in its introduction: "Wicca is respecting and living in harmony with all living things. Wicca is light. Wicca is love" (ix). Chapter One, entitled "Gerina's Grimoire," begins directly with the Wiccan Rede in italics, and she follows by explaining its implications,"It is imperative to bear in mind the Wiccan Rede before performing any magickal spells or rituals, especially those which may be considered unethical or of a manipulative nature. [. . .] If you deliberately harm or manipulate another person through black magic or any form of evil, you will pay for it by having the evil returned to you threefold" (1-2). Perhaps Ms. Dunwich should take her own advice since she apparently believes it is wrong to violate the free will of another, yet has no problems blatantly supplying spells that do just that.
This type of spellwork that Gerina has previously denounced is especially present in the section devoted to love magic. For example, one spell begins, "to gain the affections of [. . .]" (15). Another spell intended to make a love secure requires a lock of hair or fingernails of one's spouse or lover (10), and one to reunite parted lovers instructs,"write his or her initials next to yours and then draw three circles of blood around both initials" (17). All of these spells aim to coerce another human being, the "object of your affections," into loving or being sexually attracted to you against their will (13). One spell even calls for the blood of a white dove, and Gerina follows this with a caveat suggesting that in order to gain this ingredient one should,"find a dove that is already dead. Never kill a live dove! [. . .] Most Wiccans and modern day Pagans agree that the deliberate taking of life in unnecessary and [. . .] is in violation of the Wiccan Rede" (14). I live in a forested area, and have all my life, and I can say that I've never come across a dead dove. I wonder how some young person interested in completing this spell intends on obtaining dove's blood - I can just imagine some fourteen year old going to their local petshop and asking if any of their white doves have passed to the Summerlands recently and then requesting if they can "borrow" the feathered corpse. But I digress....
The next section that clearly provides spells that do not respect other living things are "spells to deal with an enemy." Yet again, Gerina states that black magic violates the Wiccan Rede and stresses that despite one's anger at another, one should "never resort to the use of black magick or sorcery" (32). Amazingly, the next few pages contain spells that require the use of photographs, names, and birthdates of enemies which are all used to bind them (31-4). Overall, the book presents this statement to the reader: Never, ever resort to black or manipulative magick because it's evil and violates the Rede, but here are all the spells you need to do so anyway!
There are Witches and Wiccans (not necessarily the same thing, mind you) who fall under all shades of the spectrum in regard to hexing, binding, and all other forms of magic that may interfere with another's free will. But even those who have absolutely no qualms about using magic in the defense of themselves and their loved ones, in other words, those who are willing to use magic as an assertive means of protection in extreme and grave situations, would not resort to doing so to curb something as petty as a gossiping neighbor! Admittingly, gossip is an annoyance that can have an effect on one's reputation and can cause much social discomfort, but if one is immature enough to feel that they must resort to magic to bind their gossiping peers, I don't believe he or she is mature enough to perform magic at all. And yet, The Wicca Spellbook provides such a spell, as well as similarly petty and/or impractical ones including how to break a curse placed upon you by a sorcerer (can we say paranoia?), and how to force someone you dislike to move away. It contains nothing to handle a situation that may actually warrant something like a binding or hexing, and nothing to deal with a serious threat to someone's life.
Gerina went through all the trouble to stress the evils of manipulative magic and seemed careful to document the consequences of violating the Rede (all in classic fluffy-bunny, white-light style) and then proceeds to contradict her own warnings with blatantly manipulative magic. To make matters worse, when she did insist upon breaking with her own philosophy of "harm none" as stated earlier in the book, she did so for some really stupid reasons!
I suppose this book got on my nerves because it identified itself specifically as a "Wiccan" spellbook, which implies that it is intended for those who follow Wicca. Obviously, not every person or group that engages in magical practice is Wiccan or follows the Rede so if this spellbook had not indentified itself as such, it probably would not have affected me in such a negative way. As stated earlier, not even all Wiccans/Witches concur on the interpretation of the Rede and how far it should be taken. However, Ms.Dunwich made such a big deal throghout the book about following it and not participating in any form of negative magic - and so there is no excuse for such an arrant discrepancy between what she apparently believes and what she does. The Wicca Spellbook: A Witch's Collection of Wiccan Spells, Potions, and Recipes Overview
