The Book of Shadows : The Unofficial Charmed Companion ReviewTo the practitioners of witchcraft and the followers of the religion known as Wicca, the phrase "Book of Shadows" refers to a journal of sorts. Traditionally, a "Book of Shadows" is a blank book that is gradually filled up with spells, meditations, ideas and notes on "The Craft". The creators and writers of the tv show "Charmed" use "The Book of Shadows as more of a spell book, but also as a way for the Halliwell sisters to grasp how they came to be endowed with special powers and how their ancestral female family members dealt with the supernatural. Author N.E. Genge combines these ideas to make a fun and knowledge-filled book. Although billed as "The Unofficial `Charmed' Companion", this is no lightweight script adaptation or silly "Behind the Scenes" look at what Alyssa Milano likes to eat for breakfast. Instead, the first section concentrates on what a beginner or teen witch needs to have as she takes the first steps on her path of learning. The first chapter entitled "The Witches Chest", touches upon the meaning and power of many different items-herbs, gems and crystals, even everyday stuff like paper and ink. Did you know you could use hair ribbons to bind people or parts of a spell together? The second chapter, "The Witches Place", deals more with the actual altar, the private area where a witch works. Sacred items such as the athame and cauldron and their various uses in spell craft are explained. Some beginning spells are also given, like ones to protect a house and to make you or a friend more lovable. But Genge is definitely all about the learning--trying to give just a taste of arcane knowledge to the readers. The point is made many times that a teen or someone who only recently got interested in witchcraft and Wicca (especially someone who heard about it on "Charmed") needs to explore, to do research, rather than rush in and experiment with things they don't understand. Throughout these lessons, there are little notes about the show, as well as about different terms used, kind of like Wicca "Pop-Up Video" facts. Genge also poses questions for the young witch to ponder as she learns more about herself and the old ways. The second section of the book is a detailed guide to the series "Charmed". Genge gives a key to each episode, including its title, guest stars and writers, as well as a short plot synopsis of each. Then the author does something interesting-asks the reader to be an "Observant Witch". "Magical Notes" are given on the supernatural significance of each episode, as well as what traditions are being explored and which stories came out of legends and myths. Readers are asked to view each show through eyes of someone who practices "The Craft" and try to hone their awareness of the many levels of the world. Again, questions are asked and ideas are brought up, as study points for the newly initiated. This "Book of Shadows" even goes so far as to have a section of bloopers where dedicated "Charmed" fans can see how close they truly are watching. It truly is a good starting off place for a teen interested in the finding out more about "That Old-Time Religion".The Book of Shadows : The Unofficial Charmed Companion Overview

Practical Protection Magick: Guarding & Reclaiming Your Power ReviewThis book is ok. It's a really good starting place for most people, and it's something I would recommend if Jane Doe asked me what to do about protection and defense. This sort of book is desperately needed. I'm glad it's out there. The author did some great things, and she fell woefully short in a few key areas. I'll break it down:
The Good
1. She starts with a quiz to inventory your psychic proclivities, then helps you work throughout the book to understand how they make you strong and vulnerable against different challenges. Different kinds of attack are broken down into what kinds of warning bells you might get and how to handle them. Good stuff.
2. The emphasis on the bulk of what we all encounter being unintentional or not necessarily malicious is important. We all have the urge to strike out when threatened. Giving readers practical mundane things to do and gracious yet firm ways to handle situations is excellent. You will read it and go, "Oh THAT'S how to handle the guy who creeps me out at work." And you will feel better about it having smooth, simple ways to deal with it.
3. There are some things people at every level of experience can learn. No matter what path you follow, you won't have to worry about karmic repercussions from using her methods. It's mostly defensive work.
The Not So Good:
1. Sections on specific kinds of attack, like psychic vampires, are very repetitive, yet they present an incomplete picture of the sort of attack and a very limited number of ways to deal with it. I would have loved to have seen explanations of different shielding techniques and ways to visualize them. I don't have to work to avoid touches from people if I've made my aura spiky at them and kept them at a distance in the first place.
2. The emphasis on common problems is good, but what about when what you're facing is an especially malicious version of a common threat? Variations to add oomph to things like house cleansing rituals is something easy and really important when someone needs it. Sage, holy water, and intent aren't always enough to really send something packing. In the same vein, stronger warding or even minor offensive techniques should be in here. Mirroring techniques to send an attack back on the sender have been around for ages and don't violate even strict interpretations of "harm ye none".
3. For such a sorely needed book, I was really sad that it didn't go beyond what I consider to be very basic, intro-level stuff. I get being cautious with the kind of knowledge you hand out when you don't know the experience level or capability of your readers. It's wise. But there's this whole level above what's in this book that is still safe, still doable by beginners, and are bigger and stronger than what's in here. There's a big gap between this and some of the more aggressive Traditional methods that not everyone is comfortable with (or should be doing). I really wanted a book I could hand off to people that would teach simple, useful techniques beyond the basic stuff they should already be doing. This isn't it, but it's not a bad place for people to start.Practical Protection Magick: Guarding & Reclaiming Your Power Overview

Creative Ritual: Combining Yoruba, Santeria, and Western Magic Traditions ReviewI understand what the author was trying to do... Help those who are in the Wiccan tradition understand and convert some of their practices. But, this book does a very poor job in doing so. Anyone interested in combining the practices of Santeria, Wiccan or any of the African traditions. Would be best to study New Orleans Voodoo and it would help them to read Luisah Teish's Jambalaya. You would be better off to skip this book. Only qualified individuals should attempt to do what this author is suggesting. Then again, some things are better left alone.
Unfortunately, this is one of the reason why it is hard to go deeper into these traditions because of people trying combine, mix, convert or whatever. Please skip, if you know what's good for you.Creative Ritual: Combining Yoruba, Santeria, and Western Magic Traditions Overview

Natural Magic; Potions and Powers from the Magical Garden ReviewI thought this was a really good book. It explained a lot of things that I had not understood from previous books that I had read. It tells you how to make certain infusions, candles, among other natural magic spells. It offered really good tables, although they are not complete. He offers an excellent bibliography for you to pursue more info to fill in the gaps that he admits leaving. I got a little lost in the last chapter on alchemy. I felt that he could have explained that a little better (I admit that I don't know very much about it). A very good book on the subject.Natural Magic; Potions and Powers from the Magical Garden Overview

Encyclopedia of Natural Magic ReviewThis book is set up with a brief description of what Natural magic is followed by an encyclopedia section describing the associations, mythology, and uses of several natural ingredients. One of the neatest features of the book is that it has a last section, called the "Natural Magic Workbook". It briefly describes how to make many useful things, such as potions, soaps, satchets, and more. The book is also written from a non-denominational standpoint, leaving room for someone of virtually any spiritual path to make use of it. Overall, the book was well-written, well-organized, and is a highly recommended addition to anyone's magical library.Encyclopedia of Natural Magic Overview

Simple Spells for Success: Ancient Practices for Creating Abundance and Prosperity ReviewI really enjoyed this book. I own a lot of spell books and what separates this from all the others is its simplicity. Dolnick tells you why you are doing the spell and exactly how and when to do it. The only thing I found missing was a further explanation as to why particular flowers or herbs were used and if we could substitute (i.e., some flowers are expensive and not always in season). There is little-to-no spiritual reference in this book so you do not have to be Wiccan or Pagan to appreciate it (Wiccans/Pagans may miss the witchy atmosphere as I did at first); Dolnick mainly relies on astrological information and herb/color lore - again, without much explanation (my opinion, the only failing of the book). If you like your spells with a little more flexibility, you may feel a bit constrained. I like that there are spells to work during the waxing and waning moons and that prosperity can be about letting go of fear as well as drawing opportunities. I am very glad that I purchased this book.Simple Spells for Success: Ancient Practices for Creating Abundance and Prosperity Overview

Workplace Spells: Everyday Magick on the Job ReviewI am very impressed with both the writing and the presentation of this book. Brooks is a gentle writer, creating a product that is tightly woven, general enough to be used by individuals from any culture/background, while specific enough to be incredible helpful!
Note that while the spells are for career concerns, they are performed in the indididual's own home. There are 51 spells addressing such concerns as finding the perfect job, job anxiety, getting to work on time, gossip and much, much more!
There is a section on creating one's own spell, as well as instructions for performing the Lesser Banishing Ritual, and raising energy.
There are sections at the end of the book on herbs, amulets, divination, gemstones and incense.
A very workable book that contains a tremendous amount of top rate, usable material. And ... it is filled with beautifil, glossy, full color photo's!Workplace Spells: Everyday Magick on the Job Overview

Encyclopedia of 5,000 Spells ReviewJust a helpful tip to whoever originated this page for the author. Perhaps I didn't see this in the reviews for this particular book (nor did I see this while reading the description for this particular book) that this is actually a DUPLICATE of the ELEMENT ENCYCLOPEDIA OF 5,000 SPELLS. Both have the same author listed, have different covers. Please be careful to make it clear going forward, because simply having a review that talks of the Element book under the 'plain' 5,000 spells title is not really all that crystal clear. It is not cool to have two copies of the same book, people don't have that kind of money to spend. Now I now have both copies of the same book. Luckily it's a book I use and the first one was falling apart, so I will not send this second one back. Please be careful with your advertising and be clear.
