Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic ReviewI have been studying sleight-of-hand magic and other departments of the art for thirty-five years. Additionally, in my own professional life, I have written 25 textbooks in another field. --With these credentials, I simply must step forward to praise Mark Wilson's "Complete Course in Magic," for the masterful instruction and the highest quality presentation.
First of all, this book is a coffee-table book-size, produced with quality binding, excellent paper selection, and the most captivatingly perfect photographic cover treatment possible! This all promises quality content; this inspires pride in possessing such a weighty and elegant work.
I can say, unequivocally, that this book is easy-to-understand, eminently practical, and immediately enjoyable; the learning factor --even for someone quite skilled-- is off the charts! Drawings everywhere! Little tips of patter and misdirection accompany all the sleights, and even self-working tricks are turned into miracles.
I have never, in all my reading over almost half-a century, encountered a more beautiful presentation, a more lucid instruction in magic. **If just one of these tricks ("presentations," really) enters your life, your personality, and, in turn, delights the people around you, the cost of this book will be rewarded many, many times over.
This is no kiddy's Course in magic, although youngsters with intelligence may begin a lifetime of delight through these pages. This is a careful, complete presentation of magic principles and nifty presentations that EVERY magician must have in his/her library.Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic Overview

Necronomicon Spellbook Reviewnow, it has been debating in-depth, quite for some time whether or not the necronomicon in general is a myth. That the belief system of this book generates it power only by new believers. Whether the necronomicon is authentic or not, this is not the case with me because it is a very powerful book. i know this by having a copy of it years ago.
now concerning the spellbook; the book is explained quite simply. you will come to know what spirit to call and for what purposes, from what i've heard the results are immediate.
i actually came across this book because of the sigils for i'm interested in all sorts of sigils.
i have not tried any of the spells or incantations out of this book because there is not banishing ritual ( a license to depart the spirits after you've called them ) and that is a very bad thing. that is why i am giving this book a three star rating.
to me, it seemed like simon was trying to get more consumers to buy his products with the continuation of the necronomicon legacy for the sole-purpose of making a fast buck. but if the spells due work (and from what i've heard, they do) it was very irresponsible of him to not decribe any banishing rituals in the book. any practitioner of the arts knows that banishing is a very serious rule of thumb when contacting any type of spirits. therefore i doubt his authentification (if any) of his knowledge in the occult.
if you do buy this book and intend to use it, please learn how to properly banish spirits so you can develop a solid system of your own to banish these entities.
you may get what you want but if you happen to so something wrong or just pissed of the the spirit by summoning it;it may linger around and eventuall destroy your life and that far outweighs any wish granted. so becareful!Necronomicon Spellbook Overview

Dragonborn (Love Spell) ReviewThis was more of a fantasy story with some sex thrown in than a love story. I finished it, but didn't have any problems putting it down, which is too bad as I just LOVE dragons. If you're looking for a love story with a good plot and dragons, try Kiss of Fire by Deborah Cooke.
Kiril knows dragons are evil. He should, as he works for the evil dragon-bonded emperor (the same one who killed Kiril's entire family). Kiril is the most feared dragon-hunter in the kingdom and now there's only one egg left for him to find and dispose of.
Dragons are good. Natiya knows because she is carrying the last egg, a Queen dragon. She has eluded capture all these years, but time is growing short and her dragon is about to hatch.
I guess I didn't enjoy this book because of all the conflicting thoughts and actions. Kiril doesn't like to kill but he does. The emperor killed his family, yet Kiril kills the only things that might be able to depose the emperor.
Natiya can't make up her mind about Kiril, dragons, or even the emperor. She has several TSTL moments and I really didn't feel for her throughout the book. I didn't feel a connection (other than good sex) between her and Kiril and both hid hurtful secrets. Anyway, I'm sure there's a vast audience for this, but I wouldn't have shelved it in romance.Dragonborn (Love Spell) Overview

Spellwright. Blake Charlton (Spell 1) ReviewBlake Charlton has done the extraordinary with Spellright. He has managed to use all the tired tropes of classic Epic Fantasy (magical books, dragons, a school for wizards, and a boy who didn't fulfill his destiny) and make them all feel fresh and engaging. Plus he does it with a main character, Nicodemus Weal, who you can't help but to root for.
The dragons, although they happen off screen, are quite inventive as are the various animated helpers that swarm the keeps and grounds of Starhaven, which is the school in question. Nicodemus is an apprentice spellwright also known as authors who suffers from a form of magical dyslexia known as Cacography, which is based off the authors own battles with it. Of course the story also involves prophecies about a special Wizard who could be a a great hope to the land or harbinger of the demons of the past who wish to control the world.
There are a few bumps in the road, but most are forgivable in the name of fun escapist Fantasy. The pacing was a little stop and go, especially in the first third. The magic systems while also the strongest and most original part of the book are initially a bit confusing, but about 100 pages in a much clearer explanation is given. This could have come a tad sooner, but it probably would have slowed down the pacing of the story if it had. Also, at one point the main villain comes off a a little too much like a bad Bond nemesis by over explaining himself and the plot, which was on the excessive side. More than one soliloquy happens like this. This problem may stem from the author trying not to drag things out. Lastly, the fight at the end of the story was worth waiting for, but the very last section felt a little tacked on and Eragon-like. Still Charlton at least condensed a fairly long time frame in a short number of pages instead of stretching a training story into a whole other book as Paolini did.
There are many different wizard factions each with their own view points and magics. The histories shared from each group were quite fascinating, although there is plenty left to reveal in future installments. Charlton has also sneaked in one of my favorite and criminally underused mythical constructs, which I'd love to mention but he went through pains to make it a big reveal. The style is heavily influenced by the likes traditional Epic Fantasy from Feist, Le Guin, and Tad Williams so don't go expecting some gritty, harsh Fantasy. Blake is being evocative of something more playful yet every bit as Epic as all the aforementioned names. A whole lot of foreshadowing goes on, which was expected given it is planned trilogy.
Even though Spellwright is Charlton's debut it certainly doesn't show many freshman jitters, but he has left himself room to grow. If you're a fan of classic style Epic Fantasy this will be a must for you. I give Spellwright 8 out of 10 Hats. Spellwright is definitely in the running for debut of the year so far and it would be surprising if it wasn't still near the top by the end. Now he's gotten me all in the mood to read some classic Robin Hobb.Spellwright. Blake Charlton (Spell 1) Overview

The Spell Sword (The Gregg Press Science Fiction Series) Review"The Spell Sword" is another Darkover novel by Marion Zimmer Bradley. This one is set sometime after the Terran Empire rediscovered Darkover. Now there are both the Darkovan natives, as well as men from Terra living on Darkover. This novel begins in a way that we have seen several times before: with a crash of a Terran vehicle on Darkover. This time it is from a team based at the Terran outpost at Thendara. Andrew Carr is a member of the Mapping and Explorations team that is slowly gathering information about Darkover. In a winter storm, the plane crashed and it was only through what Andrew thought was a hallucination that he was able to survive for very long in the storm. Andrew had visions of a woman named Callista guiding him away from the plane and to safety, but he had difficulty believing that these visions might be true. Eventually, Carr does come to accept that the vision is more than a hallucination, but someone communicating with him.
Damon Ridenow has been called to help find Callista, who has gone missing without a trace. Before Damon arrives at Callista's home he has to travel through someplace called "the darkened land" where the land is in shadows, uninhabitable and attacks can come from invisible assailants. Not a place you would want to spend much time. After passing through "the darkened land", Damon learns more about Callista's abduction and also meets Andrew Carr who was led there somehow by the vision of Callista. When Andrew and Damon discuss what has happened, they see the connection and that the only way to save Callista is by working together. Damon is surprised to discover that Andrew, a Terran, also has the potential to be a telepath, which Damon believed was a skill native to Darkover.
Throughout the Darkover series we hear that there are non-human races on the planet: the chieri and the cat-people. While we see the chieri once or twice, we have never seen the cat-people before and this was an area that I was interested in. For the most part, they are not developed as a race or as characters, except that we now know that some can be telepaths like humans (and chieri). We also know that they are mainly enemies of humans (though they have worked with the less reputable humans from the Dry Towns), though Damon does allow that their motives and culture are so far removed from human that it would be difficult to truly comprehend it.
This is a short novel, coming in less than 200 pages, but I found it to be fairly entertaining and I suspect that it sets the stage for the much longer "The Forbidden Tower" which features many of the same characters. "The Spell Sword" serves as introduction to Andrew Carr, Damon Ridenow, and Callista. It is fairly good for a fantasy novel, though it does not feature the depth of some. This is a straight forward story with some action. The Spell Sword (The Gregg Press Science Fiction Series) Overview

White Magic: Spells to Hold You, A Novel ReviewIf you've read THE LIFE HISTORY OF A STAR or AFTERSHOCK, you'll know this is an author who packs an emotional punch with language and with humor. Notably, with those books and THREE WITCHES, she writes male characters that are sympathetic in their struggles. Yeah, this book is about girls, a coven of would-be witches. But the star of the book, to me, was Jimmy the n'er do well alcoholic who falls under their spells. This book rocks.White Magic: Spells to Hold You, A Novel Overview

Wayward Lady (Love Spell) ReviewThis book was to long winded.By the time the reader even meets "Kaytano" you were connected to Austin Brand. For 3/4's of the book you read about this man and everything he suffered.I felt he should have been the hero of the book.I found the author could have also condensed this book. I wanted to put the book down because it was just to long and boring , however I am not a quiter so I kept reading and suffering.I did not like the author killing Austin .I think she should have found someone else for him to love .In my opinion Suzette was not good enough for him ! Granted he made mistakes, but not as big as robbery. He was honorable , kind , handsome and rich etc. what else can a girl ask for in a man who adores her, and if he treated Suzette like a little girl , maybe she acted like one!Wayward Lady (Love Spell) Overview

The Redeeming (Immortals (Love Spell)) ReviewThe Immortals Series:
IMMORTALS SERIES: (Paranormal)
The Calling
The Darkening
The Awakening
The Gathering
The Redeeming
The Crossing (Oct 2008)
The Haunting (Nov 2008)
The Reckoning (March 2009)Note: Do not start this series with this book. As book 5 of the series, this story finishes the tale of 5 Immortal brothers. The hero, Tain, is the youngest of them. Each of the 4 older brothers stories involves the seven- hundred year quest to save Tain from a demon who is torturing him. Tain's own book is about how his love for a woman has helped his soul to find "Redemption". The triumph was worth the wait!
For 15 months, Tain has been walking the earth looking for an end to the nightmares he has of his centuries of torture. His brothers have been giving him unconditional love and support, but Tain's soul is still tormented. The one thing that has kept him going is the comfort of the dreams he has of Samantha. She is half- human/half- demon. It was her powerful presence that helped him defeat his evil captor. Now he watches over her.
Samantha is a cop in the Los Angeles Paranormal Police Dept. Her half-demon blood gives her very little power, but her courage makes up for it. While performing her duties, Samantha is attacked by full blooded demons of rivaling clans. She is shocked when a face from the past rises to her defense. In a matter of seconds, her attackers are demolished. For the first time in 15 months, Samantha is face- to- face with the Immortal, Tain. All of the emotions he stirred in her over a year ago are back in a flash.
Young female demons are being murdered. Rival clans of demons blame one another. If the real murderer isn't found, the clans will burst into a full scale war. The world will become a battle ground. When evidence surfaces to suggest that Tain may be to blame, Samantha is slammed with a devastating choice: Believe in Tain and work with him to find the killer, or believe the evidence that indicates that Tain may be praying on demons to get revenge for his past torture.
Whatever the future holds, Tain will not let Samantha face the danger alone. Providing her with strength, support, and protection has become Tain's personal road to Redemption. More powerful than all four of his older brothers combined, Tain is ready to face Hell all over again for Samantha.Awesome story! Jennifer Ashley did Tain's book right. It's not all roses and beauty, but it's also not all vengeance and anger. Tain is tormented by the past, but more than ready to find comfort in his love for Samantha. He is powerful, but not invulnerable.
Samantha is brave, but not stupidly so. She is stronger than a regular human, but not prideful when others step in to offer her help. No mean streak or immature pouting. I was able to really like both main characters as well as several side characters. (I'm hoping for a book about her police partner, a werewolf named Logan!)If you want to read the series, Here are the first 4 books:
The Calling (Immortals, Book 1)
The Darkening (Immortals, Book 2)
The Awakening (Immortals, Book 3)
The Gathering (Immortals, Book 4)
The next book in the series:
Immortals: The Crossing (Book 6)If you like paranormals, you definitely will want to try these two series (First book in each series listed here):
The IAD Series:
A Hunger Like No Other (The Immortals After Dark Series, Book 1)
The Psy/Changeling Series:
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1)

The Reckoning (Immortals (Love Spell)) ReviewI should have paid more attention before buying this book. I didn't realize it was three short stories. The stories were good, but, too short. Garden Spells (Bantam Discovery) ReviewIn 46 years of reading a plethora of genres, I have come to love "magic realism." Sarah Addison Allen has a gift for delivering it. The Waverley girls of Bascom, N.C. all have been blessed/cursed with special abilities; Claire has a pruned a garden that grows year round and quite rapidly. Each flower is used to enhance dishes for her catering business. Subtle spells can be gained with a pinch of marigold, a dab of crystallized pansies or an apple from a very temperamental tree. Bay Waverly, 6 years old, has a talent to know exactly where everything goes in any home she enters as well as in any life she enters. Her sister, Sydney, who has fought being a Waverley for 10 years, finally embraces her ability to style and cut hair with a magic that spells her customers into feeling self confident and flirty. Their cousin, Evanelle, gifts people items they don't know they need until something happens later. This charmed family is so endearing, so lovely, one can't help but embrace them heartily.
I am nearly jealous of those who have not read it yet. It is a vibrant experience to live between the pages even if they turn so quickly.
As a first time novelist, Allen bewitches with savory prose and keen insight, leaving this reader to want more. Think of the very best fairy tale you were ever told; now pick up "Garden Spells" and read one of the best magical stories for adults this reader has enjoyed in a long, long time.
