Vintage Soul (The DeChance Chronicles) ReviewHidden within the city of San Valencez, California, a dark and mysterious society thrives. A society shaped by the supernatural, magic, wizards and vampires.
Amongst blood scented candles in a luxuriant and sumptuous setting, vampires gather to indulge in a celebration, hosted by the enticing Preston Johndrow and Vanessa DiCaprio.
"I have brandy, I have the blood of kings...I have the exsanguinated voices of an entire choir in three cases, from bass and contralto to the shiver of soprano. Tonight, we will celebrate the blood." However, the celebration quickly turns to horror as security is breached and Vanessa is abducted.
A private investigator skilled in the art of magic, Donovan DeChance, is hired by the elder vampires to find and rescue Vanessa. Armed with talismans, charms and a wealth of magical knowledge, DeChance embarks on a dangerous journey. With the help of his self-assured and powerful partner, Amethyst and his unique Cat, Cleopatra, DeChance sets about solving the mystery, fighting his way through supernatural dangers and rogue vampires.
A young vampire, Vein and a crow, Asmodeus, are just a few of the intriguing characters that inhabit the darker side of San Valencez. The occasionally cocky Donovan DeChance is charming and likable. The reader is lured into a world that is fluid, uncertain and ominous. Vintage Soul is a thrilling read, full of suspense and style.

The Darkslayer - Fantasy/Adventure (Illustrated) ReviewIn a word, fun!
In three words: FUN FUN FUN!
Seriously this is a great action fantasy. I love the way Halloran keeps the action moving forward. Evil needs to have its face smashed and the Darkslayer is the hero to do it. Alternatively, Evil might require a dirk slid betwixt its ribs and Melegal (my fave character) will be happy to oblige.
This is not Tolkien. Noone will break into a 5-page song about the coming of spring (not that there's anything wrong with that!) but that's probably not what you're looking for reading the DarkSLAYER, is it? Look at that cover-- that's what I'm talking about! That reminds me--Ernie Chan (arguably the best of Marvel's illustrators for the Conan the Barbarian and SSOC series among others) produced some spectacular artwork to highlight scenes throughout the book.
Buy it! Read it! But strap on a helmet first. Maybe wear a cup.The Darkslayer - Fantasy/Adventure (Illustrated) Overview"Do as they say or die in the dungeons," the poor storekeepers would say. "Do as they say or disappear," the commoners would warn. But Venir and Melegal could not have cared less what anyone had to say. They had been this way since their childhood. As the underlings rally all of the evil forces they can muster to destroy the mystical and legendary Darkslayer, something unexpected has upset the delicate balance between good and evil on the world called Bish, making the Darkslayer a pawn in other insidious disputes.Strife and turmoil are constant features of life as humans struggle to survive among a wide array of creatures, including orcs, ogres, and the most evil of all--the underlings. When recklessness provokes a Royal household, Venir is forced to flee the city, along withhis comrade, the skinny thief Melegal. The Royals and underlings soon unleash some unusual powers against him and start to close in. Facing the final showdown, nothing unfolds as it should.

Spellwright. Blake Charlton (Spell 1) ReviewBlake Charlton has done the extraordinary with Spellright. He has managed to use all the tired tropes of classic Epic Fantasy (magical books, dragons, a school for wizards, and a boy who didn't fulfill his destiny) and make them all feel fresh and engaging. Plus he does it with a main character, Nicodemus Weal, who you can't help but to root for.
The dragons, although they happen off screen, are quite inventive as are the various animated helpers that swarm the keeps and grounds of Starhaven, which is the school in question. Nicodemus is an apprentice spellwright also known as authors who suffers from a form of magical dyslexia known as Cacography, which is based off the authors own battles with it. Of course the story also involves prophecies about a special Wizard who could be a a great hope to the land or harbinger of the demons of the past who wish to control the world.
There are a few bumps in the road, but most are forgivable in the name of fun escapist Fantasy. The pacing was a little stop and go, especially in the first third. The magic systems while also the strongest and most original part of the book are initially a bit confusing, but about 100 pages in a much clearer explanation is given. This could have come a tad sooner, but it probably would have slowed down the pacing of the story if it had. Also, at one point the main villain comes off a a little too much like a bad Bond nemesis by over explaining himself and the plot, which was on the excessive side. More than one soliloquy happens like this. This problem may stem from the author trying not to drag things out. Lastly, the fight at the end of the story was worth waiting for, but the very last section felt a little tacked on and Eragon-like. Still Charlton at least condensed a fairly long time frame in a short number of pages instead of stretching a training story into a whole other book as Paolini did.
There are many different wizard factions each with their own view points and magics. The histories shared from each group were quite fascinating, although there is plenty left to reveal in future installments. Charlton has also sneaked in one of my favorite and criminally underused mythical constructs, which I'd love to mention but he went through pains to make it a big reveal. The style is heavily influenced by the likes traditional Epic Fantasy from Feist, Le Guin, and Tad Williams so don't go expecting some gritty, harsh Fantasy. Blake is being evocative of something more playful yet every bit as Epic as all the aforementioned names. A whole lot of foreshadowing goes on, which was expected given it is planned trilogy.
Even though Spellwright is Charlton's debut it certainly doesn't show many freshman jitters, but he has left himself room to grow. If you're a fan of classic style Epic Fantasy this will be a must for you. I give Spellwright 8 out of 10 Hats. Spellwright is definitely in the running for debut of the year so far and it would be surprising if it wasn't still near the top by the end. Now he's gotten me all in the mood to read some classic Robin Hobb.Spellwright. Blake Charlton (Spell 1) Overview

Flowers ReviewFlowers is a wonderful collection of twelve short stories, without a stinker in the bunch! These stories range from creepy to surreal, haunting to gripping - but each one is an absolute page turner.
The opening story 'The Vampire Shortstop' is probably the strongest in this collection. It's about a small town little league team that just happens to have a vampire on the team. People have become tolerant of all different races and religions, but there remains a schism between the living and the undead. The story comes to a head as tensions rise between this twelve year old vampire shortstop and the intolerant townsfolk, and plays out in a very Twilight Zone-esque manner. If this sounds interesting to you, then you will almost definitely enjoy this collection of stories. Flowers definitely left me interested in checking out more stories by Scott Nicholson.
It's also worth noting that these stories are appropriate for young adults. I would have loved to read this as a sixth grader!Flowers Overview"Always surprises and always entertains." --Jonathan Maberry, ROT AND RUINA fantasy and paranormal collection. Star Crash (Love Spell Futuristic Romance) ReviewWhen her beloved Alex apparently died in a crash, Cora Daniels lost her will to live. She became reckless driving her space vessel Freedom and keeping up repairs as if she planned a suicide crash deep in her subconscious.
When the Freedom finally fails, Cora, using all her skills, manages a safe emergency landing on an unknown planet. Aliens capture her and take her to a prison encampment where she meets other humanoid species who are being forced into breeding by their guards who believe humans are dumb beasts of burden. Cora vows to escape, but is stunned when she sees Alex is one of the prisoners. He does not remember her or anything before his captivity. However, she now has a reason to live free as she plans to liberate her, Alex and the others.
Obviously reminiscent of Planet of the Apes, STAR CRASH is an interesting romantic science fiction that is at its best when readers obtain insight into the aliens and how they see humans as being beneath them. However, when the plot turns to sexual encounters, it decelerates as these trysts feel unnecessary. Still fans who appreciate outer space encounters of the first kind will enjoy Elysa Hendricks' entertaining look at comparative anthropology from ET's perspective.

Hard Spell (Occult Crimes Unit Investigation) ReviewIn Hard Spell, the first book of the Occult Crimes Unit Investigation series, Stan, his partner, their boss, and their other associates work to ensure that normal and supernatural people (aka `supes') get along by whatever means necessary. After dealing with some difficult cases, Stan Markowski finds himself investigating a series of gruesome vampire murders that might be part of a sacrificial ritual while also dealing with wizards, a cursed book, witchfinders, even more vampires, and a cultist out for revenge.
Despite the backwards way that information was occasionally passed on,* Gustainis' writing was very solid and very engaging throughout. There were also a few typos, but that was nothing compared to a terrific amount of details, an excellent pace, the flow of events, and Stan Markowski and Karl Renfer's partnership. Stan was very much a loner and very much -and somewhat desperately- married to his work. I loved his first person point of view. His sarcastic, more-than-slightly jaded take on things made sense given his job and really just the dangers lurking around every corner of Scranton. However, I was very thankful for Karl being there. He was able to provide a really great sidekick element to the book and also prevented Stan from retreating too deeply in on himself.
Over all, the world-building was excellent and wonderfully well-executed. Gustainis paints a very dark, gritty, edgy picture of a town swarming with supernatural and paranormal activity. While there are plenty of gray areas throughout the novel in regards to supes and several aspects of Stan's primary case, I liked that the vampires, werewolves, ghouls, witches, and cultists were a lot more complicated than simply being good or evil. The way things were fleshed out in terms of the Occult Crimes Investigation Unit was very convincing and well-developed too. In addition, there is no romance here, plenty of swearing, and no real happy endings to be had, which I appreciated. Really, I was incredibly impressed by the level of believability this book had despite how very unbelievable everything was. I also enjoyed the humor of the book, particularly the darker aspects of it, as well as all of the pop-culture references. Particularly Karl's love of all things Bond and Stan mentioning both Night Gallery and the Necronomicon.
All of that said, I did sort of wish that the female characters in Hard Spell hadn't been so obviously assigned specific roles and relegated primarily to the background. There were women in a lot of scenes and a few of them were important minor characters like Rachel Proctor and Christine, but really they didn't get to kick butt and take names so much as be rescued from overwhelming trouble and/or danger. I also find it a bit weird that the only female member of a SWAT team featured later on in the book has to be bailed out by male teammates and that even the female Hellhound thrown into the mix was described as not being as intimidating as the male of the species.
Not wanting to focus too often or too hard on female characters is fine, of course. I have enjoyed plenty of books that has taken that approach such as the first two books of Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles, which does include female characters but is mostly about a druid named Attitcus, his dog, and his supernatural lawyers. But there's also no reason to have a lot of female characters around only to have them read as very or at least slightly inferior to their male counterparts. Granted, this element of the book didn't ruin the story for me or make me care any less for Stan or Karl, but it was -and still is- a bit troubling.
In conclusion, very, very good and pretty much exactly what I'd been hoping for. If you've been finding Urban Fantasy far too light on substance, far too heavy on romance, or far too light in general, I'd highly suggest checking out Hard Spell. I am also incredibly glad that this is the first book in the series because I definitely want more. I do hope that Evil Dark utilizes female characters in a better way, but for the most part I simply can't wait to see what happens in book two.
* Occasionally, I had to wait until the end of the chapter or section for Gustainis to reveal something Stan had known for a long, long time or that the person Stan had been talking to was a friend, relative, or colleague.Hard Spell (Occult Crimes Unit Investigation) Overview
