Dragon Over Washington (The Third War Of The Bir Nibaru Gods) ReviewThis book from an unknown author really gave me a surprise. It turned out to be one of the best and most interesting books I've read lately, though I go through one or two kindle titles every week.
I'll start with the hero, an NSA employee called Thorpe. Thorpe is a likable character, a man who is really a boy in his heart, who works for the NSA mainly to get a chance to play with all the neat gadgets and electronic toys that only the government possess. Then, interesting things start happening and Thorpe, mainly out of boredom with his normal tasks, start to investigate. Thorpe, right in front of our eyes, finds out disturbing things, things that herald an unimaginable danger coming to out earth. However, among all the trouble brewing and Thorpe having to fight for his life against a mystery foe, Thorpe manages to grow up a bit, starting to understand something about responsibility and dependability. But even so, he still finds time to fall in love with a fellow agent. Following Thorpe's character development was a real treat.
The book involves supernatural events occurring right in our own, mundane world. The author managed to describe the events in such a way the reader feels that real events are being described, that if you'd open your TV, six o'clock news would declare that in London, wield and catastrophic events started happening. This blending of the real and the unreal was written so well as to make the seams invisible, immersing the reader into a fantastic adventure that nevertheless feels absolutely real.
The book's uncompromising realism is especially pronounced when battles against fantastic monsters (I can say dragons and demons but I don't want to give away the surprises from the book) are being described. The reader feels he is actually in the battle scene, seeing every fang and talon, hearing every growl and hiss. It's an incredible experience.
Last but not least, the book leaves tantalizing hints involving our own ancient history. There is a deep connection, a mystery to be unraveled that makes you want to devour this book in one go, even forgetting to sleep (but not eat, of course. I usually eat and read at the same time).
I've never read a book quite like this before. I can highly recommend it to anyone searching for something really interesting and original to read. If you don't believe me - just download the prologue!!!

Divorced, Desperate and Delicious (Love Spell Contemporary Romanc) ReviewThis book was so much fun to read. It's a sizzling romantic comedy about a woman who's dog discovers an injured man in her backyard. He (Chase) is a cop that just escaped the bad guy, but who is also being framed as a bad guy. You know from page 1 who the bad guy really is, but its quite a mystery as to how they will prove it. Meanwhile, these two spend many days and hours confined together in her remote home near a lake, which creates a great deal of whitty dialog and steamy scenes as they go about trying to prove him innocent. There are a lot of secondary characters that were great. I really hope we see one or two spin off stories from this book, especially Jason's story. ;-) Fans of authors such as Rachel Gibson, (who like their stories funny but with depth to them), will love this book. This is NOT a fluff book or a book that is all about sex (which are becoming way too common!) This has a real strongly developed story that showcases a very interesting couple on the journey to falling in love. A yummy book, highly recommended!Divorced, Desperate and Delicious (Love Spell Contemporary Romanc) Overview

The Sorcerer's Songs ReviewAdam is a scorecerer with magical powers and is afraid of it's strength, so therefore runs from everyone and everything that he's held dear, especially his one and only love Stacey. Too afraid of hurting her, he's lived the past twenty years on the road, a loner, with nothing or no one to keep him company except for his guitar and the string of meaningless one night stands in his wake.
He can't get Stacey out of his head and decides to finally return to his home town. Only to find that Stacey has returned recently as well. His love for her soars, and he's willing to do anything to make things up to her, serenading her and all, and although devastated she wants nothing more than to enact what they should have had all those years before by becoming physically intimate. She finally pries his secret out of him as he saves her from becoming severely hurt. Scaring her at first, she then has to decide to take him how he is with powers and all, or to let him walk right back out of her life for good...
Getting into this book I knew that this story was very heartfelt, and it made me not only enjoy, but appreciate it because of it's meaning. I loved that Ms. Howell derived this story through her husbands songs, and through the words encorporated a very enjoyable paranormal romance.
The Sorcerer's Songs Overview~All song lyrics in this story are from the CD, Weathervanes, by Steven Howell~ If I knew then, what I know nowI'd like to think I'd choose a different way to goBut, my mistakes have paved the wayDown this dark and lonely, dead-end road Poised on a stool in a corner of yet another bar, in front of a crowd of maybe fifty, the harmonies he played reached out to those around him. The rhythms in his head stirred his heart. For a man of magic, a sorcerer with powers he had never asked for, his musical talents were sung spells. They were his weapon of defense against loneliness, bringing people to him like a siren's song. Yet, for the most part, he let his music haunt the deeper needs of those who listened-letting musical phrasings stir wants unnamed or purposely forgotten. Although he felt but a living and breathing jukebox, these strangers who came to see him play were the only lives he could touch. He reached out to them with his songs. That is until one night one of Adam's songs lures him back toward his hometown, and he calls out for Stacey, the one he was forced to leave behind all those years ago. Only this time she wants answers as to why he left, and maybe a bit of revenge for the heart he destroyed. I wrote The Sorcerer's Songs using my husband's song lyrics to create the plot. It was a lot of fun to write, and a great writing exercise! I think I was so inspired by his music that the story practically wrote itself. Click Here to listen to the song that inspired the story called "The Road" from Steven's "Weathervanes" CD. I am just so excited, and so grateful to my husband, Steven Howell, for letting me use his music!

Spell of the Black Unicorn ReviewThis debut novel by Lorelei Bell is entertaining quirkiness all the way through. Bell blends her wit of the ages with fresh ways of looking at ancient characters. Dorian, the knight-turned-vampire is a vampy hunk and Aunt Tillie is the token weathered and wise old crone. But Bell's treatment of the enigmatic sorceress, Zofia, wraps the story up in fantasy, with a touch of female realism. A fun read for the young and young-at-heart.Spell of the Black Unicorn Overview

The Spell Book Of Listen Taylor ReviewThis book threw me off a bit. The Spell Book of Listen Taylor begins by focusing on a seventh grader named Listen Taylor, addressing her troubles with her old friends at a new school. Listen finds an odd spell book and the spells might actually work, though Listen seems less informed than readers about the spells' outcomes. (Despite the wonderful cover, this is NOT a fantasy--it's contemporary realism with hints of whimsy and magical realism.) Anyway, I quickly allied myself with Listen as the main character, only to find that she was a member of an ensemble cast--many of whom are adult characters.
The narrative is framed by the Zing Family Secret, which impacts a surprising number of lives. Listen's father's girlfriend Marbie is a Zing, and a large portion of the book is about Marbie, Marbie's sister Fancy, and Fancy's daughter Cassie's second-grade teacher, whose name is Cath. I should note that people cheating on their spouses or boyfriends is a strong thread running through the narrative. It occurs three and a half times in key subplots--the half being an imaginary affair. (The affairs are treated as troubling, but not entirely objectionable.)
Of course, readers will spend much of the book trying to guess the Zing Family Secret; it turns out to be both ordinary and extraordinary when it is finally revealed. Moriarty's characters are likable and the humor is subtly ironic. There are also a number of fresh plot points and details, plus the author has a very appealing voice.
I soon found myself wondering, however, whether this is truly a book for Young Adults. The majority of the book is about the adult characters, which is usually a no-no when writing for children or teens. Listen's piece of the plot is certainly compelling--Moriarty captures the random cruelty of middle schoolers with laser-like precision. But Marbie, Fancy, and Cath--grown-ups understandably preoccupied with their adult relationships--are given an awful lot of page time. A reader Listen's age may be unwilling to sit through long passages about adult women's lives (mothers, teachers, and grandmothers, no less!), but perhaps older teens will.
In a way, what throws me here is the juxtaposition of the story of a cluster of affairs with the humorously cloak-and-dagger plot line of the Zing Family Secret, as well as with Listen's school troubles. These story strands feel like they could have been three different books. Connections are eventually made between the strands, but in the meantime, they make for a slightly uneven braid.
Yet I found a lot to like about the book. Certain characters are particularly intriguing--Cassie, the second grader, could do with her own book, in my opinion. And there are so many nice touches, like the thread about hot-air balloons and the role of pies in one of the subplots, also a sly, funny bit about writer's block--how writing manages to emerge in someone's life even when she thinks she's stuck. Obviously, I have mixed feelings about The Spell Book of Listen Taylor, but I'll end by happily vouching for Jaclyn Moriarty' talent.
P.S. Update: It's been a few weeks, and I just have to say, "Aha!" Last night I read a Horn Book review that says Listen Taylor is "a revised version of an adult novel." So that explains a lot!The Spell Book Of Listen Taylor Overview

Come Spell or High Water ReviewThis was a great read! I was scouring the internet for more! Surely this can't be the end for these vibrant, jump-off-the page characters?Come Spell or High Water OverviewSpell Slayer might be a certified weirdo, but she was also a whole lot of other things including: a whole lot of fine in 5'8" and 165 lbs of dark chocolate beauty. She was also a whole lot of smart and a whole lot of unpredictable'just like all of the Slayers. Daughter of Zeus and Sheriff Dream Slayer, sister of Lure Slayer (3 time bass-fishing champion), Sensei Slayer (pro football player), Calm Slayer (badazz karate master and trainer of Special Forces units), and Rage Slayer (the co-owner of You Can Kiss Our Whole Sass Sports Promotions). One of the top sports agency firms in the nation, You Can Kiss Our Whole Sass had four rules:1) No hockey players.2) No soccer players.3) No motherfuckers.4) If while we're representing you, you turn into a MF, you have to get the fuck out.Rave Loïc is a hockey player. He's also 6'5 230 lbs of ripped, hot chocolate man with a shelf full of hockey awards proclaiming him the best offensive player in hockey. He's also co-owner of the title for best a*s in all of professional sports. The guy he shares the title with is Deuce Loïc-the best all around defensive player in hockey'and his brother. Both Loïc males want to be sole owners of the best ass title. But as bad as Rave wants the title, he doesn't want it nearly as bad as he wants Spell Slayer.

Under His Spell (Harlequin Blaze) ReviewJimmy Ray was the nerd in high school. He never spoke up for what he wanted, he never got the girl. Now Jimmy or Jim, as he prefers to call himself, is all grown up. Tech geek turned millionaire turned all-round hottie. But he still doesn't have the girl. Not until Nicky Taylor, the gal he's had a crush on since high school, walks into his stage show.
Nicky is overwrought and overworked. She needs a vacation and a break. Basically she needs to chill, but with hundreds of jobs on the chopping block at her firm, she's taken all the responsibility onto herself and can't let go of the office, the cell phone, or of her own deep-seated self-doubt, despite her outward success.
Maybe it's because this book has so much of what I love that it rings true to me. Sure Jimmy seems too good to be true on the surface -- hot body, sharp mind, millionaire AND he's a hypnotist! But Kathy Lyons makes him so vulnerable and real. He's the insecure boy who was every girl's friend in high school, but when it came to prom, he stayed home without a date. Nicky is the woman who seems to have it all, but it's at the cost of her family and her personal life. She's as scared and vulnerable as anyone else, without being weak and simpering.
The hypnotism is grounded in Nicky's fears and need to let go. It's not just there as a device and the author has taken pains to be realistic about what hypnotism can and can't do. Which is super-wonderful because it also happens to lead to some really smokin' hot love scenes. Like really, really hot.
Did I say hot?
At first I was a little puzzled as a fan that Jade Lee was writing under a new pen name as Kathy Lyons. But after reading this book, I think there's definitely a place on my shelf for both.

Spell Games (Marla Mason, Book 4) ReviewThis installment of the Marla Mason series continues the solid story-telling and writing.
