Dragon Over Washington (The Third War Of The Bir Nibaru Gods) ReviewThis book from an unknown author really gave me a surprise. It turned out to be one of the best and most interesting books I've read lately, though I go through one or two kindle titles every week.
I'll start with the hero, an NSA employee called Thorpe. Thorpe is a likable character, a man who is really a boy in his heart, who works for the NSA mainly to get a chance to play with all the neat gadgets and electronic toys that only the government possess. Then, interesting things start happening and Thorpe, mainly out of boredom with his normal tasks, start to investigate. Thorpe, right in front of our eyes, finds out disturbing things, things that herald an unimaginable danger coming to out earth. However, among all the trouble brewing and Thorpe having to fight for his life against a mystery foe, Thorpe manages to grow up a bit, starting to understand something about responsibility and dependability. But even so, he still finds time to fall in love with a fellow agent. Following Thorpe's character development was a real treat.
The book involves supernatural events occurring right in our own, mundane world. The author managed to describe the events in such a way the reader feels that real events are being described, that if you'd open your TV, six o'clock news would declare that in London, wield and catastrophic events started happening. This blending of the real and the unreal was written so well as to make the seams invisible, immersing the reader into a fantastic adventure that nevertheless feels absolutely real.
The book's uncompromising realism is especially pronounced when battles against fantastic monsters (I can say dragons and demons but I don't want to give away the surprises from the book) are being described. The reader feels he is actually in the battle scene, seeing every fang and talon, hearing every growl and hiss. It's an incredible experience.
Last but not least, the book leaves tantalizing hints involving our own ancient history. There is a deep connection, a mystery to be unraveled that makes you want to devour this book in one go, even forgetting to sleep (but not eat, of course. I usually eat and read at the same time).
I've never read a book quite like this before. I can highly recommend it to anyone searching for something really interesting and original to read. If you don't believe me - just download the prologue!!!

Evolving Ecstasy (ALMOST HUMAN ~ The First Trilogy) ReviewThis is Melanie's best book thus far!
As Felicity and Cain's relationship continues to grow they are both faced with making difficult choices that will change the course of their lives forever. Despite her love for Cain, can Felicity bear the idea of giving up her future human life of marriage, children, grandchildren, and a career? Can she say goodbye to her family to live alongside Cain in an undead existence for eternity? She loves him with everything she is, but is it enough? Cain is having his own internal moral battle regarding changing Felicity over. He wants nothing more than her by his side forever, but must debate the implications of taking her human life.
Of course there is more excitement with the rest of the gang: Ben, Sindy, Allie, and the return of Mattie as we get ready for the first book of the second trilogy Born to Blood. Evolving Ecstasy is an excellent read with an unbelievable ending that left me in tears!Evolving Ecstasy (ALMOST HUMAN ~ The First Trilogy) OverviewALMOST HUMAN ~ The First TrilogyIn this paranormal fantasy, chapters alternate perspective between a vampire and a young woman, as they join an ensemble cast of characters to navigate difficulties of addiction and desire; perils of zombies and vampires; and struggles with abuse, morality and... college.Volume 3: Evolving EcstasyThe relationship between Cain and Felicity has crested to a peak that leaves them unsure whether to step back from each other for safety, or jump into a future united in death. Felicity is unlike any human Cain has known before. She treats him as an equal; a man worthy of friendship, respect and even' love. She embodies qualities of gentleness and loving trust that he has never found among his own kind. This makes her far more desirable to him than any creature of darkness could ever be. The venom of Cain's bite could protect Felicity from hostile vampires, but it would give him a measure of psychic control over her as well. Would Felicity only accept becoming a vampire, due to his addictive venom, coupled with the foolishness of a young girl in love? Perhaps there is a brighter future for her in the human world. Is Cain's desire for Felicity's love worth the loss of her life?*ALMOST HUMAN is a series of successive trilogies, not stand-alone books. Each trilogy is self-contained enough to be read alone as a 3 book set, but the story unfolds chronologically, and the characters do continue from one trilogy to the next. Main storyline closure is in each 3rd book, but there are also story-ties leading from one trilogy to the next in the series. *For series updates, visit: MelanieNowak.com

Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) Review
Wow! What a fun read! The author really has a winner here. If you're looking for a fun romp through a magical world, then look no further. In this book, the author has put an original spin on the essence of magical powers, giving the story a fresh new twist. He also manages to blend the real and magical worlds in a unique way which helps you identify more closely with the main characters: they truly are as real as you and me (no need for a prized lineage or a high midi-chlorian blood count!). If you have kids who don't like to read, hand them this book. They will more than likely change their minds! Is this the next Harry Potter? Who knows, it certainly could be. Although it is a fun book for young and old alike, and full of magic, one thing it is NOT is "another" Harry Potter. This is a truly original story and a lot of fun to read. Once you start, and your internal movie projector gets going, you will quickly get attached to the characters and won't want to put the book (or should I say kindle?) down. There is one down side however: it appears we'll have to wait over a year for the next book! In the meantime, grab a copy, enjoy it, and spread the word!Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) OverviewTwo powerful wizards battle for the greatest magical force ever to exist. The power escapes, but is severely injured. In order to survive the mystical force enlists the help of Dylan Murphy, a sixteen year old boy from Colorado. Strange things happen throughout the state as Dylan helps the magical force survive, restoring it back to health. Unknown to Dylan wicked foes will stop at nothing to seize control of this supreme power. The king and queen of Colabra dispatch friendly forces to align with Dylan as the great chase begins. He is pursued from Colorado all the way across the universe through magical and mystical places. Battle after battle ensues with the wicked wizard and his followers as Dylan attempts to protect this great force from evil.

Cleah: The Lost Fury Chronicles (The Otherworld) ReviewCleah is a wonderful heroine who attempts to always do the right thing, although maybe a little too much. However, she is likable and I found myself cheering for her throughout. Her companion on this journey, Ronan, is a bit more flawed, making him more dynamic in the story. Both characters grow-up during their time in the Otherworld and are forced to take on new roles and challenges leading them to see each other in new ways.
The Otherworld is a fun read. The story is a coming-of-age tale full of adventure, magic, battles, and even a touch of romance. The plot of the story is well executed and the pacing keeps the pages turning.
Overall, I found this to be a wonderful fantasy. There were a few instances where I was confused by how another character were presented in the story and also some minor technical errors in the writing. However, it was easy to forgive and continue reading through the story.Cleah: The Lost Fury Chronicles (The Otherworld) OverviewLong ago, in ancient Eire, lived a young orphaned slave named Cleah. Her life is shattered when raiders destroy her home and she is forced to find safety in the Otherworld, where fairies, trolls and dangers await as well as the possibility of love. Cleah soon realizes that in order to survive and return to her own World, she must first learn to fight and to love; and, she must uncover the tangled truth of her origins.

Black Magic Woman (Morris and Chastain Investigations) Review_Black Magic Woman_ by Justin Gustainis is one of the best contemporary fantasy novels I have read in a long time. It has great pacing, characters and plot.
The book starts out fast, with the prologue taking place at the Salem, Massachusetts witch trials in 1692. From there we move to the present day, where our two main characters -- Quincey Morris and Elizabeth "Libby" Chastain -- are each running their own private supernatural consultant businesses. Quincey specializes in dealing with supernatural problems like demons, vampires, or angry ghosts. Libby is a white witch who focuses on magical issues and misuse or misrepresentation of mystical powers such as black magic, fake mediums and fraudulent preachers. They are good friends who have worked on cases together before, and this time it is Quincey who needs Libby's help defeating the curse placed on a family.
There were A LOT of things I liked about _Black Magic Woman_:
- Quincey and Libby are great characters. Both are interesting, have their own personalities and backstories, and their interactions are pleasant to read as well.
- Even though there are a lot of secondary characters and a lot of subplots, it doesn't get confusing or boring, and everything is tied together at the end.
- A lot of passing references to classic horror movies and novels. It's fun to see how Gustainis weaves these into the story.
- References to current-day events, such as politics at the FBI, or some of the more intractable problems in post-Apartheid South Africa.
- Gustainis did a lot of research on his subjects. In particular, lynch mobs attacking suspected sorcerers in Africa and "necklacing" them is something that really happens, and it was obvious Gustainis did a lot of background study before writing this book. At the same time, Gustainis has a light hand with his material and his writing never becomes boring or pretentious.
- In particular, _Black Magic Woman_ stands out from a lot of recent dark urban fantasy in its treatment of gore and Christianity. Some authors in this genre have a tendency to spend A LOT of text on torture and pain, and treat Christianity as being either judgmental and overly rigid or hollow and materialistic. While _Black Magic Woman_ is definitely a crime thriller and a lot of ugly things happen during the book, Gustainis does NOT make the reader wade through pages and pages of blood and horror and bad guys lovingly describing their sadism. Also, the treatment of Christians, Christianity and Christian mysticism was very even-handed.
- There are a lot of great story lines and great secondary characters which would all make interesting books in themselves. Do Quincey and Libby ever run into Barry Love in New York again? Does Fenton ever get sucked into more odd cases? Do we ever get to see Van Dreenan again?
Regarding things I didn't like about _Black Magic Woman_ -- there wasn't much. I think one escape where our protagonists FLEW was a bit far-fetched, but that's the only major complaint I have.
I am looking forward to the next book, and definitely consider this one to be a five-star read.Black Magic Woman (Morris and Chastain Investigations) Overview

The Weight of Blood (The Half-Orcs, Book 1) ReviewWhat would you get if you turned Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser into a pair of half-orc brothers, gave them severe inferiority complexes, moral ambiguity, and massive tempers, and then threw in a powerful religious zealot who sways them closer to the dark side than any individual should ever be comfortable with?
Why, you'd have "The Weight of Blood" by David Dalglish.
"The Weight of Blood" is an extremely dark fairy tale that tells the story of those aforementioned half-orc brothers, Qurrah and Harruq Tun. As far as main characters go, I don't think I've ever seen their likeness. Sold separately into slavery by their orc mother early on in life, they eventually escaped and found each other again, only to grow up without guidance on the streets of a town called Veldaren, scavenging for food and learning that sometimes in life, when you come from nothing, it's better to kill than be killed. Qurrah is a spindly and coldly intelligent sort whose greatest passion is to become a powerful sorcerer. Harruq, on the other hand, is a large-bodied and (sometimes) kind-hearted oaf who exists seemingly only to protect his physically weaker brother. The dialogue between the two borders on hilarious in the early going, when they're still nothing but vagrants. But there is something darker in them, mostly in regards to Qurrah, which begging to be released. They are archetypal antiheroes, existing on the periphery of a society that wants no part of them.
The story starts off with a bang, dropping us in on the brothers as an army of orcs attempts to invade Veldaren. It is here that we first meet Velixar, a necromancer and master of the dark arts, who eventually takes the brothers under his wing. Through Velixar, we also are presented with a sizeable chunk of the world Dalglish has created, which is notable if for no other reason than it gives the reader a frame of reference to draw upon further down the road.
The novel is chock full of intense and extremely graphic battle scenes. It would be easy to get lost in the action if these scenes weren't expertly crafted, which they are. The actions the brothers take from the onset vary from miscreant to downright evil. They butcher women, children, whole families, mostly without batting an eyelash. Even when one of them seemingly finds love, through the appearance of a beautiful sorcerer elf named Aurelia, this does little to stifle the loathsome behavior. Qurrah and Harruq appear to be brutes, ostensibly without a soul, and they act as such.
That statement is not quite true, however, and herein lays the brilliance of the world author Dalglish has created. This is a story of their fall and hopefully redemption, though as a series, once we reach the end it is still in the early stages. But the hope is there that these two will find their way. We get to see inside the brothers' heads, and what we find there, though disturbing, allows us to feel a glimmer of gallantry. They are capable of love - this much is evident by the way they feel about each other - and any being who can experience that emotion in its fullest and most vulnerable can eventually learn to harness that inner goodness. All they ever needed was guidance, something that was denied them through unfortunate circumstances beyond their control.
And this is where we come to the crux of the fable that the author is telling us. In many ways, the brothers' situation mirrors events we see all the time in the "real world". They have nothing, they are starving and ostracized. Everyone looks down on them. They wander through life without a purpose save staying alive. When one looks at it like this, is it any wonder that when a stranger approaches the destitute pair and offers them a life that has meaning they leap for it? They who have nothing are promised the world. They who've been looked at as the lowest of the low are told they will be worshiped as gods. They who have had to scrape and claw are given gifts of such power that they become death incarnate. When viewed from this vantage point, can we not understand, even sympathize, with the plight Qurrah and Harruq have been forced to deal with? If we, as civilized humans, were put in the same situation, would our morality not begin to wither and die after a while? This rings true with what happens every day in certain parts of the world. It is almost the very blueprint for terrorist recruitment. And at the end of the day, that is what the brothers become. Terrorists. They target not only the enemy but the young and innocent. They strike from the shadows, seeking to assist a greater agenda that they either don't or can't understand.
This is a very dark book, so take that as a warning. If you don't like the images of flayed arms and legs, decapitation, or bodies reduced to quivering masses of blood and innards, stay far away. However, if you appreciate a well-told story that pulls you into its world and won't let you back out, this is the novel for you. It is unrelenting and fast-paced. It makes you care about the characters, no matter what bad deeds they may perform. And, best of all, it allows you to feel hope that the characters will turn it all around, and through something as simple as an act of kindness.
In short, I loved "The Weight of Blood". The title says it all. It's about the inherent price of violence, the duty of family, and the pressure to do what's right. I would definitely recommend it. As far as fantasy goes, I feel you'd be hard pressed to find one that equals its scope and passion. I, for one, can't wait to get pulled into the next volume.

Star Crash (Love Spell Futuristic Romance) ReviewWhen her beloved Alex apparently died in a crash, Cora Daniels lost her will to live. She became reckless driving her space vessel Freedom and keeping up repairs as if she planned a suicide crash deep in her subconscious.
When the Freedom finally fails, Cora, using all her skills, manages a safe emergency landing on an unknown planet. Aliens capture her and take her to a prison encampment where she meets other humanoid species who are being forced into breeding by their guards who believe humans are dumb beasts of burden. Cora vows to escape, but is stunned when she sees Alex is one of the prisoners. He does not remember her or anything before his captivity. However, she now has a reason to live free as she plans to liberate her, Alex and the others.
Obviously reminiscent of Planet of the Apes, STAR CRASH is an interesting romantic science fiction that is at its best when readers obtain insight into the aliens and how they see humans as being beneath them. However, when the plot turns to sexual encounters, it decelerates as these trysts feel unnecessary. Still fans who appreciate outer space encounters of the first kind will enjoy Elysa Hendricks' entertaining look at comparative anthropology from ET's perspective.

The Camelot Spell (Grail Quest Trilogy, Book 1) ReviewFourteen-year-old squire, Gerard, is utterly disappointed that he has not been chosen to accompany the knights on the Quest for the Holy Grail. After all, it is his wish to prove himself as a great hero who is brave, and ready for anything that life has to throw at him. However, he never realized that he would have the chance to prove his bravery this soon. For, on the eve of the Quest for the Holy Grail, at a large feast celebrating the momentous occasion, every adult in King Arthur's castle, in the midst of their filling meals, falls into a deep sleep - an enchanted sleep - and nothing will wake them. Now it is up to Gerard, who has spent every waking hour of his life dreaming of becoming one of the prestigious Knights of the Round Table; along with the help of Ailis, a maidservant who has been his friend through thick and thin over the years; and Newt, a rough and tumble stable boy, to make their way through various obstacles - including an ugly bridge troll, a dark and powerful witch who wants nothing than to take down King Arthur and the realm of Camelot, and a scheming dragon - in an attempt to save their home from the evil that will stop at nothing to have its way. And, in the meantime, make a name for themselves, and prove that, even though they are children, they have the strength to save the kingdom that has given them shelter all these years.
Over the past couple of years, I have become very interested in Arthurian history, which is why I was ecstatic to learn that Laura Anne Gilman's GRAIL QUEST was being released. THE CAMELOT SPELL is an enchanting series debut that mixes the history of Arthurian legend, with fantastical elements to create the ultimate thrill ride through adventure and magic. The characters all bring about their own perspectives on the situation they have been throw into - from Ailis' quick-thinking, and wit; to Gerard's trained hand with the sword; and Newt's ofttimes cynical thoughts. THE CAMELOT SPELL offers a bit of something for everyone, male or female, history buff, or fantasy fan; and will leave everyone craving the sequel MORGAIN'S REVENGE. An enchanting, keeps-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat read that will be devoured in one sitting.

The Healing Spell ReviewThe Healing Spell by Kimberly Griffiths Little is a surprisingly wonderful book. Although written for the middle graders, all the adults that I know who have read it have found it moving, engaging, and deeply satisfying. I started it on one day and couldn't put it down until I finished it late into the night. The story grabs you and pulls you along.
Livie lives in the bayous of Louisiana with her family. Her mother has been injured and is in a coma. Her father brings her home to hopefully recover, although the hospital doesn't give her much chance. Eleven year old Livie is a middle child who doesn't feel like she fits in her family and is carrying a terrible secret about her mother's injury and feels she must do something to help her recover from her "sleeping sickness."

It is a story told through Livie's eyes and mind. It is about a family's healing, loving and reaching out to each other.
The characters are fully drawn and realistic and the settings are lush. Every character is one you can understand and sympathize with, no stock bad guys or wicked stepsisters here. The book deals with universal truths and feelings and draws you in beautifully.
The author shows great skill in the storytelling, revealing the plot in natural and intriguing ways. Brief descriptions are woven naturally into the story vividly enough you can visualize everything and the narrative never lags.
You will cry at the end of the book but not out of sadness but because you have been touched so deeply and profoundly. It may even help you heal and understand yourself. It is a book about family, faith, healing, and reconciliation. There is a healing spell in it, but it is really about the magic in love and faith and commitment. Youths will identify with it but even more so do adults. It would also make a good read aloud book for the family. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

The Spells Trouble ReviewCan a holistic, vegetarian witch and a blood sucking vampire find true love? If you had asked Arianna Belford that before that eventful Halloween night she and her friends spent at the Crypt Casino, she would have said no. That's why she makes it a rule to not date vampires - ever.
Jake, the sexy vampire bartender at the casino, won't take no for an answer when he meets the beautiful witch, and he swiftly proves to Arianna that there is an exception to every rule...
But another vampire has set his sights on Arianna this night - and it is up to Jake to keep her alive!
Cobblestone Press's Vegas Magic series is a trilogy of connected stories by three different authors whose skills and imagination complement each other very well. The Vegas Magic stories star three friends who arrive at the Crypt Casino in Las Vegas to celebrate Halloween night. They separate almost immediately upon arrival, and each book is told from the perspective of a different woman, and centers on her romance.
While the books do ask that the reader suspend disbelief a bit, as each of the friends finds true love on the same night and in the same place, the effect of the three perspectives is undeniably fun! Each of the books is peppered with tidbits from the other two women's stories, which enhances each of the stories. While the three stories share a setting, each has a different antagonist to challenge the leading couple.
After reading one of the books in this series, I knew I had to read all of them right away, and I was not disappointed in any of them. Although the books' storylines are closely integrated, and the timelines are simultaneous, they can be read in no particular order without spoiling the experience at all.
I have to say, Shelli Stevens hit me right where it counts by pairing a vegetarian with a vampire in her addition to the Vegas Magic series, This Spells Trouble! When a sexy story makes me laugh, it is a winner in my book every time! I sincerely hope Stevens uses the same ironic wit in her other books, because I will definitely be buying more of her work after reading this one!
Stevens easily holds her own with the other authors in the Vegas Magic series, and her offering rounds out the cast of alpha males with an oh-so-sexy vampire bartender who isn't exactly what he seems. Coupling him with the sweet and quirky Arianna makes for a delightful read that will keep you turning the pages until you finish the story!

Of Spells and Demons ReviewKeric and Coran return in this book. This time they take a journey to the White Mountains to find the source of the demon infestation. Like Tolkien there is a fellowship of Wardens who are the the Marines in this book. They all take turns protecting the mage Keric. Being a scroll mage he has limited powers but finds out he really has a great deal more. The knomes are very helpful with healing him and Bale and correct damaged scrolls. There is a life and death war between the good mage and the bad ones. As you can tell I really enjoyed this book. I even read it while on vacation at Disney world, if that tells you anything.Of Spells and Demons OverviewSomething dark is stirring on the edges of the mage-kingdom of Sacreth. The ruling Mage Council, complacent and divided, is stirred to action by the attack of a rampaging demon on one of the valley's outlying settlements. The young but talented wizard Keric Olwyn is sent to investigate, along with a hand-picked team of elite Border Wardens, and a somewhat reluctant mountain guide. Armed with some of the most powerful magic that Sacreth's mages can provide, Keric and the Wardens must confront and overcome not only demons, but magic and treachery in their efforts to protect the people of Sacreth from the threat posed by the wizards of the mysterious Academy.
