Soapmaking Reviewafter purchasing and trying some of the author's soap i was blown away by it's creamy texture, thick (but not too heavy) scent and beautiful appearance and packaging. when i found that she had written books about soap- i had to check them out. let me say that i like soap, but am not a soap enthusiast, or someone who knew anything about soap.
her first book (soapmaking, a magikal guide) is dedicated to the basics of soap making. it offers unbelievably clear, simple, and unpretentious directions. if you want to make soap tomorrow- or even today- this is the book to read. it also details the use and making of magikal soap- a variety of soaps used to bathe before pagan rituals. for those uninterested or unfamiliar with paganism, be not intimidated- if you want to make soap, this book is worth reading.
her second offering, a book from the everything series entitled the everything soap making book delves into a more detailed and explicit look at making soap. she offers suggestions for packaging, whether it be for gift giving or running your own business. she has suggestions for all kinds of soaps, recommends products, tells you what supplies are worth shelling out the big bucks for and what supplies you can pick up on the cheap. there are a lot of recipes and info on how to set up a successful work space, etc.
the very best thing about books written by alicia grosso is that they are very simple and easy to follow. her writing flows well and is enjoyable to read. best of all she is very funny- often down right hysterical. she is completely unpretentious and happy to share her secrets. and best of all- she'll teach you how to make damn good soap.Soapmaking Overview

Spellcaster: Book of Magick ReviewI can't rave enough about Spellcaster! I've always wanted to learn to cast a spell, make a circle and use all the right correstpondences. This book has everything I needed, right down to how to make a besom (witch broom). I found a list of crystals and what they do, feathers, moon phases, all the herbs and so much more. The list of spellcasting tools and how to make an altar was fantastic. I've learned so much already!
All the spells in the book can be used for me or for someone I care about. There is a cool section for more advanced witches to make their own spells too. I really like the sheets in the back that help me while I learn to make a spell of my own. I tried a wishing spell...and my wish came true! How great is that? Thank you Lady Rose, finally a book that has everything I need! I love this spellbook! Blessed Be!Spellcaster: Book of Magick Overview

The Pagan Book of Halloween: A Complete Guide to the Magick, Incantations, Recipes, Spells, and Lore ReviewPublished by Penguin Compass in 2000, this book follows the same kind of format as the Halloween book by Silver Ravenwolf published by Llewellyn in 1999. The research for the history differs a little as is from some different sources, and focuses on the Celts in Briton and Ireland to the present. Ms. Dunwich then examines the symbolism of Halloween, Divination, magic spells, rituals and recipes.
In the history section, the retelling of the myths, legends and actual historical background of the holiday we know as Halloween is much more cut and dry than other volumes previously presented. There is, however, some spin placed on events. I did find some questionable conclusions and some errors in facts. The mention of a pagan deity "Muck-Olla" is not accurate, as this is a bull from Welsh legend, not a pagan god. Just one of many examples.
The bibliography that Ms. Dunwich draws from appears to be quite extensive, and covers much folklore, some pagan sources and some actual historical sources. Again, some questionable conclusions are drawn, in my opinion, as well as confusing or misrelating some facts.
She covers some of the traditions of this Holiday and how they became incorporated in today's modern celebration. She looks at Trick or Treating, Day of the Dead and shows the incorporation into today's customs. She then goes into the modern practices of Wicca and how this holiday has some mistaken associations, none of which are associated with Wicca, and gives her brief accounting of where this misinformation may have originated.
These areas are covered briefly, not delving into much detail and gives an overview of the topic. Ms. Dunwich refrains from spinning too much of this into an issue, which is, in my opinion, good but could have been better.

The Symbols part of the book covers the usual: bats, skeletons, jack-o'-lanterns, cats and cauldrons and more.
Ms. Dunwich includes more in a section entitled Legend and Lore, focusing on the fire, astrological and fairy associations as well as others. Irish and Briton lore is included, making for some interesting stories and reading.
She then takes a brief look at some herbs. She examines some herbal associations to flying ointments, as well as magical properties of some herbs associated with the holiday.
We come to some Superstitions and Omens, which covers such items as weather, candles, blood, cats, venturing off into old wives tales. "If the moon at Halloween is new, this indicates that the coming year will be fertile ground for new beginnings to take place, such as the start of a new project, a new career, or even a new way of thinking." Further examples are given.

She also covers Divinations and Incantations, or magic, such as crystal balls, love spells, apple magic, fire scrying, nut divination (the food) and much, much more.
Ms. Dunwich also includes a ritual which can be adapted by both covens and solitaries and offers a list of Gods and Goddesses connected with Halloween.
She offers some actual spells, for everything from keeping evil spirits at bay with garlic to blessings for the dead. And finally some recipes for food for that day's celebrations including Colcannon, mulled cider and soul cakes, to mention a few.
The book is a small one, pocket size, approximately 5 inches by 7 inches. The paper is typical paperback paper used commonly by Penguin books, and the cover is coated, giving it texture and making the lovely print of John Waterhouses "The Crystal Ball" stand out. The book is peppered with some small woodcut prints in black and white which have associations to the chapter contents. And it has an index for easy referencing.
The book makes a fair presentation of the holiday of Halloween but does not generally offend. Ms. Dunwich tells her stories in an easy to read fashion.
The fact that it mirrors the same kind of content as the Halloween book by Llewellyn from a year earlier makes this book almost redundant, except for the fact that Ms. Dunwich does add some of her own material here and there. But she covers similar ground, and the appeal here would be if you were a Gerina Dunwich fan rather than a Silver Ravenwolf fan you would find this book more appealing.
This book offers a simple overview on the various topics. A good book overall, but nothing to get excited about here unless you are a Gerina Dunwich fan. boudicaThe Pagan Book of Halloween: A Complete Guide to the Magick, Incantations, Recipes, Spells, and Lore Overview

Exploring Spellcraft: How to Create and Cast Effective Spells ReviewI really liked this book. Most Wicca 101 books come with a chapter on magick spells and Magickal Correspondences. This book basically takes that chapter and blows it up into something a little more useful.
However it doesn't contain any info on raisng and focusing power or using visualizations so if you don't already have a book on that (Laurie Cabot, Scott Cunningham, Silver Ravenwolf etc.) yer gonna have a recipe book. I think it makes a good companion piece to a book that teaches a specific magickal path.
Note: Conservative Wiccans aren't gonna like this one, it challenges the Law of 3 and the idea of not using person specific love spells. If you have serious problems with that i'd stay away from this one.Exploring Spellcraft: How to Create and Cast Effective Spells Overview

HedgeWitch: Spells, Crafts & Rituals For Natural Magick ReviewI'll never understand why people are so mean. This is supposed to be a path of life that celebrates, not berates. I have seen many people post reviews saying that SRW talks down to her audience, speaks to us like children. Did you know that the New York Times is written on a high school level? She is speaking in a language that everyone can relate to. Reading her book is like having a conversation with her. Now, i have never read any other books on Hedge Witchery, she is my first, so i can't compare her views to the "real" views that some of you have issues with. But isn't it about what makes you feel good? What sits in your heart and soul and just feels right? If it is all about the rules and what is right or wrong, then join one of the traditional religions and go to church every week and follow a book of rules and regulations that are rigid and unchanging. That's not for me though. Whether or not the book is what you might consider "real" Hedge Witchery, all i know is that in the end, the words inside that book resonated with me and made me feel good. If you don't like it, or her, then don't read it. But don't tell other people what to do, let them decide for themselves.HedgeWitch: Spells, Crafts & Rituals For Natural Magick Overview

Spell Crafts: Creating Magical Objects (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) ReviewSince early times, crafts have been intimately linked with spirituality. When a woman carefully shaped a water jar from the clay she'd gathered from a river bank, she was performing a spiritual practice. When crafts were used to create objects intended for ritual or that symbolized the Divine, the connection between the craftsperson and divinity grew more intense. Today, handcrafts can still be more than a pastime-they can be rites of power and honor; a religious ritual. After all, hands were our first magical tools.
