777 And Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley: Including Gematria & Sepher Sephiroth ReviewLet me start this review off with a disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of Aleister Crowley. Crowley was a colossal egotist who brought disharmony and conflict everywhere that he went, who was despised by nearly everybody who knew him well, and whose reputation was only later rehabilitated by associates who were reaping a financial profit from Crowley's collected writings; Crowley was a drug addict, with all of the chaos and upheavals that this lifestyle brings into a person's life, and despite Crowley's pontification about the will he ultimately surrendered his own will to the dread god Opium; Crowley took serious and irrevocable oaths to several Occult orders, seldom staying long enough to be fully initiated into their higher mysteries, and repeatedly violating these solemn oaths by publishing whatever secrets happened to be entrusted to him; Crowley was a charlatan and a fraud, the kind of person who would fake a mountaineering expedition in Mexico in order to bilk his backers out of their sponorship money, as he was once caught red-handed doing by a Mexican newspaper... it just makes you doubt the veracity of Crowley's prophecies, particularly prophecies in which Crowley was to be the sole voice of authority, and especially considering that this status provided Crowley with a meager trickle of income for the remaining days of his miserable life. Crowley simply was not credible as a prophet or as a supposedly "enlightened" human being. This is not a man that I would emulate spiritually, certainly not somebody that I would turn to for advice or guidance, and probably not somebody that I would even want to know or be associated with. The bottom line is that you wouldn't take an estimate from this guy to fix your plumbing or paint your house, yet thousands of people around the world revere Crowley as some sort of demigod! It's sad, and it speaks to how desperate the West is for "spiritual truth," but in my opinion Crowley would have been entirely forgotten by now if he hadn't generated so much controversy and notoriety during his own lifetime.
That said, I'll be the first to admit that '777' is clearly one of the best works of its kind, and rightly merits a place of honor on every occultist's bookshelf. '777' is really a compilation of three of Crowley's published works on Qabalism, and each deserves some discussion on its own merits:
The first chapter or book in '777' is an early essay on Gematria, the Qabalistic art or science of rendering words into numbers and deriving meaning from the result. To give Crowley his due, the man clearly knew his way around Hebrew and Greek Gematria, and this essay contains several examples of Crowley's best Qabalistic work, marred perhaps by Crowley's tendency to obfuscate his meaning when he wanted to sound mysterious. Unfortunately, this defect is characteristic of Crowley's writing, and '777' is replete with this intriguing mumbo-jumbo. There are also several editorial errors which have apparently passed through several successive editions of '777' without notice (one blatant example is the lengthy quotation from Mathers, which lists a first example and a third example, but oddly omits the second example from Mathers' original). Still, this essay on Gematria is one of only a handful of clear, concise introductions to the subject, and Crowley covers the topic with his usual wit and keen insight.
The next chapter in '777' is really the heart and soul of the entire volume. Originally published by itself as 'Liber 777,' this chapter contains page after page of Qabalistic associations and attributions. Although this sort of stuff filled the hand-scribbled grimoires of magicians and Qabalists in the Middle Ages, there haven't been many reliable works of this sort published anywhere in modern times, making 'Liber 777' a real gem. Most of the attributions given in 'Liber 777' probably came directly from Allan Bennett, Crowley's mentor in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, who was known to have compiled his own list of Qabalistic attributions before leaving England for health reasons. Dion Fortune, in "The Mystical Qabalah," confirmed that many of the attributions listed in 'Liber 777' had previously circulated among initiates of the Golden Dawn, and for this reason it can be assumed that much of this material was presented to Crowley when he joined the Order. Crowley clearly enlarged and expanded upon Bennett's work, but some of his attributions are suspect-- and as Fortune went on to point out in her book, many of Crowley's additions to this material are completely at odds with other attributions under the Golden Dawn system. It's almost as if Crowley, in an effort to expand on whatever material had been entrusted to him, compulsively meddled with that material without ever bothering to clearly identify or source any of his contributions. Still, Crowley's list of Qabalistic attributions is the only surviving version to have survived the Golden Dawn's demise, and occultists are indebted to him for preserving this material for posterity. For this reason 'LIBER 777' is an invaluable resource, and one that no occultist should be without!
The final chapter of '777,' SEPHER SEPHIROTH, is a Qabalistic encyclopedia started by Allan Bennett and expanded by Crowley and others throughtout the course of Crowley's life. Crowley's high esteem for Bennett is obvious in that he gave him full credit for authoring the document, instead of following his usual modus operani and claiming sole authorship for himself! Unlike most encylopedias, which list entries in alphabetical order, SEPHER SEPHIROTH arranges its entries in numerological order-- making this book a really handy reference for anybody interested in Gematria. It's a simple matter to render the Gematria value of any Hebrew or Greek word, and then consult SEPHER SEPHIROTH for other words and phrases with the same value. A word of caution, though-- because it was a group project spanning many years, SEPHER SEPHIROTH lacks any sense of focus or editorial consistency. Different dialects of Hebrew are mixed haphazardly throughout the work, the spelling is inconsistent, and several entries appear to be contradictory upon closer examination. (Indeed, Crowley's editors even apologize for their inability to define some entries, stating that the origin and exact meanings of some 'words' had been lost due to carelessness on Crowley's part!). SEPHER SEPHIROTH is a great reference, and a definite time-saver, but I wouldn't rely upon its authority too heavily! I refer to this part of '777' fairly often, but I always cross-reference Crowley's work with STRONG'S CONCORDANCE or another reliable reference before taking it to heart.
I know that, in some occult circles, it's almost an act of heresy to criticize Aleister Crowley. I think that Crowley, ever the iconoclastic rabble-rouser, would have been amused with the sort of hallowed iconic reverence that some people hold him in today. In any case, Crowley reached a sort of zenith with '777,' a lovely reference work that makes a useful addition to any occult library. Taken for what it is, '777' is sort of like having a set of Cliff notes on Qabalistic attributions-- useful, perhaps, for gaining a surface understanding of the subject matter, and valuable as a quick reference, but hardly authoritative on its own. I refer to my own copy several times a week, and I'd strongly recommend '777' to any practicing Qabalist.777 And Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley: Including Gematria & Sepher Sephiroth Overview

Liber Kaos ReviewLiber Kaos is definately not a good book for someone new in chaos magic. Read "Condensed Chaos" by Phil Hine if you are a neophyte. Even though it does introduce key ideas about chaos magic Peter Carrol progresses rather quickly into more advanced concepts, that combined with large amounts of pesonal dogmatism makes it unsuitable for the newcomer.
As an advanced chaos mage you will clash with Carrol's ideas. The book from the beginning contains hard to agree with dogmatism. Within the dogmatism are some great theories and ideas but it is up to the reader to weave through it. Even though Peter Carrol in the father of chaos magic (with Austin Osman Spare being the grandfather) he suffers from what most authors about magic suffer from. Presenting their beliefs as universal truths.
Not all is negative though. Within his book there is a plentiful of concepts that you might or might not decide to include in your toybox. Moreover its a book that must be in your library since Peter Carrol is the first to give chaos magic a name and he is the one that started it all.
Assume nothing.Liber Kaos Overview

Initiation in the Aeon of the Child: The Inward Journey ReviewThis book is the first critical and credible contribution to our doctrinal understanding of the initiatic system of the Order known as A:.A:., and the formulae of the `New Aeon' of Thelema, since the original writings and teachings of Aleister Crowley. Interestingly enough, it is the originality of the new content by Mr. Gunther - or at least its open publication (for a review on the back cover of the dust jacket pretty much says this content is privately taught within the membership of A:.A:.) - that has stirred controversy and even contempt, as one of the other Amazon reviews here confirms. These opinions make for poor literary reviews, and should neither detain nor discourage the serious and interested reader or student. Study the book for yourself and make up your own mind.
My own approach was to read the book in full for an overview, then go back to it and focus on parts which particularly interested me, and then as an ongoing engagement, work through the book carefully. In my opinion, it is a book to be experienced rather than analysed, and worked with and worked through over time. In this sense, Gunther's book can serve as a supplementary textbook to Crowley's teachings and curricula - clarifying some points, hinting at others, and revealing doctrinal contexts that underpin the system. The discussions about the Aeons, what formulae are abrogate and what have been superseded, the doctrines of the Messiah and the Four Gates, the dialectic of Thelema, and the Sevenfold Arrangement of Hoor, are a few of the topics covered. Readers new to Thelema and the A:.A:. system need not be intimidated if the above leaves you wondering what the hell I am referring to - the book is grounded in a scholarly approach to the subject, and articulates many of the processes and formulae within a psychological framework, making the book accessible to readers not necessarily familiar with the language of Initiation and Thelema. Qabalah and Alchemy are also used to explain the various stages of the journey. There are some typos but you'll pick them up on careful examination. Of particular note is the diagram on page 179 - match the trigrams to the descriptions on the following page so you have the right ones. There is an extremely useful glossary provided as an Appendix, which is worth reading through sequentially in its own right.
So, what has all the fuss been about this book? Why are some folks getting so worked up about it? I suspect that by default Inward Journey has put on notice every self-styled Thelemic teacher, authority, and bogus A:.A:. group out there with their fraudulent invention of "lineages". By their fruits ...
I was interested in the review on Amazon for this book titled "The first significant systembuilder since 666 within Thelema" which described how the book would be of relevance to members of the O.T.O. To add to that, I thought it worth mentioning that the Australian Grand Lodge has formally incorporated "Inward Journey" into its curricula.Initiation in the Aeon of the Child: The Inward Journey Overview

Goth Craft: The Magickal Side of Dark Culture ReviewWhere is the dark spirituality in this book other than
trying to make your self look like a uber-goth? I
couldn't find it. (However one star for a nice layout)
Dark spirituality is more than just
the trapping of the "costume" you choose to wear. It
IS who you are. If you are looking to find real
information and guidance look somewhere else , this
book is nothing more than Wiccan basics with splash of
Hot topic thrown in for good measure. And it's a real
shame ,quality books on dark paganism aren't easy to come by
and that's why I figured I give it read. I did do a
bit more research on Mr. Raven Digitalis and it seems
as though his brand ( and yes I do mean commercial
paganism ) is stacked with contradictions. Dark
energies are not commonly associated with light and
love , they are the polar opposite. While much
happiness and fulfillment can be found in Dark
Paganism, it takes more than just eyeliner and a
love for spookiness.
If the dark path is right for you the information will
come- from somewhere else.
I recommend :
"Out of the Shadows" by John J.Coughlin,
"Crossroads" by Greg Crowfoot
"The Witching Way of Hollow Hill" by Robin Artisson
"The Pillars of Tubal Cain" by Nigel Jackson
"Strange experience;: The autobiography of a hexenmeister"
by Lee R Gandee
"Ceremonial Magic & The Power of Evocation: A System of Personal Power"
by Joseph C. Lisiewski
"Cunning-Folk and Familiar Spirits: Shamanistic Visionary Traditions in Early Modern British Witchcraft and Magic" by Emma Wilby
or as a gentle start you could even try Konstantions.
But don't think you're going to walk way from this book with a real
understanding of Dark spiritualityGoth Craft: The Magickal Side of Dark Culture Overview

The Spellcasting Picture Book: Visual tools for grown-up magic (Volume 2) ReviewIf you think magic and the casting of spells is Serious Business then do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT read the rest of this review, and on pain of the death of your supercilious ego, avoid Diana Rajchel's The Spell-Casting Picture Book.
"This isn't a teaching spellbook or a beginner's book. If I wanted to spend forever hacking at the same basic crap other Wiccan writers get stuck with, I'd have done it. I decided to skip that part and go straight to the spells. There are a couple basics - grounding and centering - but for the rest, a search on USENET under FAQs on energy work will do you just fine."
In one sense, that sums up what this Spellbook is about - no nonsense, no mucking around, no moralizing, and totally direct. In another, it completely belies the absolute FUN that the reader will find herein. A spellbook, fun? Absolutely.
Moreover, this is an exploration in creativity, pushing boundaries and finding fresh perspectives. I found the sheer delight and fun on every page to be nearly as wonderful as the spells themselves. (Which are, by the way, lucid, focused and powerful - much better than most spellwork I've reviewed over the years.)
The colors are rich and fluid, the spells themselves rhymes, often accompanied by gestures (pictures of Diana's hands are included). This is crude by most people's standard's but they do not lack power for all of that. If you want complicated, look elsewhere. If you want polished, it ain't here. If, on the other hand, you want to read what a REAL witch has in her Book of Shadows (well, kind of: my pages aren't nearly so colorful, but I'm a frustrated and frustrating artist) then get this one.
Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended. The Spellcasting Picture Book: Visual tools for grown-up magic (Volume 2) Overview

Practice of Magic: An Introductory Guide to the Art ReviewWhat a gem! If you have not read this introductory book on practical Occultism, let me tell you to run out and buy a copy NOW!
Mikaharic is one of those unsung heroes in the Occult who has not only successfully practiced what he preaches but also has developed his own system of practical Occultism (like yours truly!;o) Unlike a lot of the authors out there who play follow-the-follower when it comes to writing about Occultism be it Witchcraft, Vodu, Ritual Magic, etc., Mikaharic does his own researches, formulates his theory, tests his theory and then doing this over and over again after which THEN tells you what actually works.
Born in rural Bosnia prior to WWI, Mikaharic he immigrated to the US in the late 30s and made his living practicing Occultism and passing himself off as a "witchdoctor".
The book covers many subjects from Religious Ritual to learning Natural Magic and much in between. Ritual and Ceremonial Magic, Elemental Magic, Candle Magic, etc. However you may ho-hum the book and say "Been there, read that!" and probably you have. Yet the author gives personal anecdotes and experiences that are typically NOT found in your average "new age practitioners" book that you spent 1 ½ to 2 times the amount of money to get. (My copy retailed for only nine dollars and ninety-five cents).
The exercises while basic in content and form offer some truly unique results if the dedicant perseveres enough. He even relates how his first teacher admonished him after he sent Mikaharic away with the command to practice the art of relaxation. After four months of diligent practice, Mikaharic went back to his teacher only to discover he had not mastered this subtle but necessary art fully. Thus he was told to not come back until he had done so. After another six months of diligent practice, he was ready to continue.
There are other exercises sprinkled throughout the book that you can make use of after you've practiced and mastered them. Under the chapter on Deific Magic, the author discusses the forces at present in the objective universe and how many devotees of magico-religious systems learn to grow under the tutelege and guidance of such powers.
There is a nice Bibliography and a worthwhile Index for you to use. If you know of a beginner who really wants to do it the right way, THIS is one of the better primers you'll be able to lead them too. It should be required reading in all covens, lodges and temples regardless of the path. I have recommended it to my students in my Sorcery tradition as well. And yes I practice the exercises dutifully.
I rate this work 5 stars as it is complete, touches on a wide variety of topics and is not preachy but guiding. The author has chutzpah and practices what he preaches. He's also the author of two other essential books that you may want to look up and obtain as well.Practice of Magic: An Introductory Guide to the Art Overview

Angels, Demons & Gods of the New Millennium ReviewFinally, an advanced book of magick! So much of what we get from the publishers today are works for beginners. In Lon Milo DuQuette's Angels, Demons, and Gods of the New Millennium we are fortunate to receive a work written for those who have more than a passing knowledge of Kabbalah, sorcery, and other arts of magick. Here is a book written with the authority of experience, yet without the overbearing weight of received truth. DuQuette speaks to us as if we were guests in his home who share his love of magick. Knowing the groundwork is already covered, he shares the fruit of long thought about, and experience of, magickal practice.
DuQuette writes with a different voice from those of the greater lights of early in this century. His style has the personal qualities of Israel Regardie's but in the '90s it is just not possible to speak with such certainty. Instead DuQuette writes from experience, from successes and failures. He digests all this down to what he feels is important, even if the outcome doesn't fit the usual interpretations.
For example, DuQuette plays with both conceptions of the AA (Argenteum Astrum): the group of people who worked with Aleister Crowley and his students on the one hand, and, on the other, the body of initiates that has been guiding humanity towards enlightenment since time immemorial. DuQuette raises the logical point that if this organization has been present "since the dawn of consciousness" and has been embodied in such great souls as Lao-Tse, the Buddha, and Pythagoras, then how can access to it be limited to those with pieces of paper signed by Crowley and his heirs? DuQuette moves the AA to a more immediate plane, where any student with right aspiration can find herself in the great chain of initiates.
DuQuette's chapter on the Kabbalah is more basic than most others in this book, but it is pithy enough to give anyone a leg up on the study and practice of the discipline. He avoids the usual formulaic definitions of the sefirot and other components of this tradition by speaking from the distilled essence of his experience. One excellent display of his skill is his presentation of the Shem ha-Mephorash, the 72-fold divided Name of God from which a series of spirit names are generated. DuQuette boils down the abundance of turgid writing on this subject to a few pages accompanied by a chart, which Weiser obligingly prints in color in a foldout sheet. This, combined with the methodology presented in the later chapter "Demons Are Our Friends," provides a sufficient, though sparse, basis for sorcery, the practice of spirit conjuring.
A practice more common in theology than in magick is textual exegesis. DuQuette engages this discipline by explicating the Emerald Tablet of Hermes in light of the doctrine of the Holy Guardian Angel, the practice of seeking contact with the divine through a personal source, one's own angel. In his analysis DuQuette interprets the alchemical process of the Tablet as a way of attaining to knowledge and conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel - a key component of Crowley's magick.
Such analyses are a necessary step in the evolution of magickal thought and practice. We can only improve on our methods by engaging with classical texts and practices in the light of our own experience; doing so illuminates the depths that we have intuited in these sources. Having no formal academy in which to share our insights, we are aided by DuQuette's book. He has moved our understanding of magick forward.

Practical Elemental Magick: Working the Magick of Air Fire Water & Earth in the Western Esoteric Tradition ReviewThis is the second book of three produced by the authors in the same series. I hope that there will be many more.
This book, like the other two books in the series (Practical Planetary Magick and Practical Qabalah Magick) is filled with excellent, well organised research on the topic covered. In this instance, the Four Elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth. It is a great book for both beginners and experienced practitioners of ceremonial magick, but would also benefit those on a pagan or Wiccan path as the four elements play such a crucial role in those traditions too.
The practical workings, meditations and rituals presented in this book provides both regular workings for people who want to develop a daily practice, as well as inspiration for people who are creating their own solitary or group rituals. The information provided in this volume on the different elemental beings and spirits is absolutely priceless and worth the cover price of the book just for it twice over. It clarifies and provides clear references as to the development of some of the systems, as the manifestations of these beings from a historical perspective.
What is great about the books in this series is that they are traditional in the information they provide, but have none of the stuffiness of the books produced by other authors who have written around the same subjects. In fact there are no other books on the market covering these fundamental subjects in such a down to earth, intelligent and informed way.
Highly recommended and I am hoping that there will be more in this series and format from the authors in future.Practical Elemental Magick: Working the Magick of Air Fire Water & Earth in the Western Esoteric Tradition Overview

Magical Knowledge Book II - The Initiate Review(...) At this point many magicians give up their magical career. This book is not about acquiring basic magical skills, experience and practice. This book assumes you have done all your homework already. Homework during elementary, grammar school and college that is. It basically is that black car waiting in front of the gate of your university, engine humming, when you come out, final degree in your hand. It is what you have waited for all these years. And what rarely happens in real life. Well, consider yourself lucky - this time it does. It's right in front of you - 336 pages humming just like that engine, cover open, waiting for you to jump in. Stephen is an ex-Satanist high priest. He is well qualified to speak on the subject of occultism, and unethical agendas of practitioners. Making a midlife faith-change from Satanism to Christianity makes him able to speak candidly from both viewpoints.
Our society has adopted a post-Christian worldview that tolerates anything except fundamental Christianity. Before the 1970s, witchcraft was hardly spoken of in public. In the 50s, Rowling would have been run out of town. Witchcraft was seen very negatively.
It is now acceptible to indoctrinate children with "Witchcraft 101" via realistically crafted tales like H.P. There are clear differences, which the author points out, between pure fantasy literature and that rooted in fact.
The general public doesn't accept Wicca as a valid religion. Its darker cousins, such as sorcery and satanism are also believed to be fiction. I challenge defenders of H.P. stories to prove their realism with a simple topical websearch.
Therefore, since H.P. is based on values and practices of modern Witches and Sorcerers, these books must be viewed as promoting a religious set of values. This is of questionable benefit for children. Stephen is doing a public service by calling attention to the omission of this information from reviews of Harry Potter. We have a right to fair disclosure.
The proliferation of the H.P. stories feeds an appetite for secret knowledge and power, often leading into practice of magick-based "traditions" - aka religions.
Stephen presents clear logic about how this material is presented to readers, and how it creates such a hunger for forbidden knowledge. He offers ways to remove this influence, if parents or young adults themselves choose to break the connection.
To those who understand that the spirit world is as real as our visible world, this will make sense. To those who believe it is all "make believe" it will seem like a paranoid attack on a world-renowned author.
He provides the knowledge to let us consciously choose to allow occult-based religious literature into the home. If reading overtly "religious" material at a young age would be unacceptable, then H.P. should be banned from a child's library.
This can be compared to adult relationship preferences. It is possible to read entertaining books showcasing an alternative lifestyle, but are they appropriate for young readers? What about books showcasing alternative spirituality? We have a choice. Let's make it an informed one. Hear Stephen out and decide if it makes sense.
For readers looking for an informed, Bible-based look at the HP phenomenon, this is a good place to start. They will feel vindicated for their misgivings. Those opposed to Biblical values will find it intolerable and judgemental. Either side should find it informative.Under the Spell of Harry Potter Overview

The Rollright Ritual ReviewWhen William G. Gray bicycled across the moonlit English countryside to commune with the Rollright stones in Oxfordshire he was presented with a vision of a simple pattern; the fourfold balance of the quartered circle. This pattern was already familiar to him as the structure underlying the hermetic magic of the Western Mystery Tradition: the four quarters, the four elements, the four magical implements. He saw the pattern imprinted on the stations of the Rollright site itself: the stone circle, the solitary megalith "king stone", the portal dolmen of the "whispering knights", and a nearby gateway site which formed the womb/tomb to complete the circuit. He also saw the pattern as a template for the evolution of the soul's consciousness, and by drawing microcosm and macrocosm together he came up with the Rollright Ritual, a self-initiatory journey through the four stations of consciousness.
Much has been written about stone circles of the megalithic age but where others have sought to explore the Outer Dimensions, looking in from the vantage point of the historical intruder, W.G. Gray is more concerned with the Inner Dimensions and the power of the stones as a form of communal keep. In a sense, Gray gets his blood from a stone by fleshing out the previously enigmatic and presenting these megaliths as "condensers of consciousness" with a unique and yet universally human story to tell. His study of the Rollright stones will be a treat to geologists, archeologists, anthropologists, geomancers, mythologists, geometrists, and divinators alike as Gray moves from the shadow angles on the "cosmic clock" to the familial wheel and their "spirit spokes." The stone formation is considered both as a representation of the communal assemblage that was contained within the circle - and as a collection of separate symbols or station points that make up its function as a whole. No stone is left unturned as Gray presents his stage-map of ritual drama - and yet the visiting seeker takes care not to trample on nor mar their message with modern clumsiness. The stones serve as antennae to some historical and spiritual truth, and the reader of this marvellous work will hear but a little of their magical whispers. The Rollright Ritual Overview

Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: A Complete Guide to Loving Enchantment ReviewI got this book last Yule from a friend. I have never heard of this title so I placed it on the side thinking I will read it later.
Since receiving it, I must say I call upon this book a lot when there is a problem or I am stuck. This is one of the most useful and helpful books in my library.
Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: The complete guide of magical enchantment is a wonderful book. However, I think the first four words puts people off. They think this is just another spell book. However, it is so much more.
In this book, there is a vast collection of spells and recipes for wonderful charms, talismans and amulets. However, there is so much more.
This is a great book for beginners as well as a great reference book for all of us who has been practicing for a while.
It covers all the basics from basic traditions of beliefs and it takes a look at the magickal tools, deities, words of the Wiccan way. It also shows you some helpful physical and mental techniques. This book shows you how to prepare an altar and the meaning of certain symbols and colours to everything in between.
What this book has that many books do not is a true Do-it-yourself style. There is wonderful recipes to make your own oils, incense to even making a simple robe. It takes you step by step so anyone can do the spells or make any item in this book.
Pamela Ball's writing is easy to understand. She is best known for her dream books. However, this book in my opinion is her best. The information in this book is very useful and helpful. However, what I love about this book is NOT, it is not boring. The writing is simple and uncluttered.
This book is completely underrated, and not given a fair share as other books on the subject of Wicca. Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: The complete guide of magical enchantment should be in any Pagan/Wiccan's library as much as any other book on the subject.
It is a shame that book is no longer in print. This is a lesser-known gem that should be hailed just as much as other beloved books of the path.Spells, Charms, Talismans & Amulets: A Complete Guide to Loving Enchantment Overview

The Real Witches' Kitchen: Spells, Recipes, Oils, Lotions and Potions from the Witches' Hearth ReviewThis book is FULL of wonderful recipes & is a great companion to the Real Witches Handbook. For those not familiar with Kate West, she's a Brit high priestest & writer. Her books are easy to read & well organized for both beginner & advanced students.
Because her work is read in different countries all over the world, there are 1-2 measurement units that require conversion to US standards. But these are simple elementary conversions. However the bulk of her recipes are in standard formats any wiccan would find in any other book. The oils, teas, & bath products recipes are given in drops, tsp, & tbsp (standard). The dry insence, potpourri, & herb recipes are given in parts (standard).
The only "tricky" measurements are in the food recipes. Since some but not all of her readers are American, she gives recipes in standard units that are familiar to most countries. (All Europeans, Austrailians, & Americans are familiar with pints.) If you prefer your measures in cups, then just remember back to 5th grade math: 1 (british)pint=2.5cups (1 US pint=2cups). And if you look right there on your measuring cup, you will probably have measurements for ounces listed right along side the cup measurements since 8oz=1cup. Or you can simply remember: 1 oz=2 tbsp
This is not rocket science, folks, so don't be scared off by customer reviews complaining about having to do simple conversions. Many times, Ms. West supplies conversions for you, such as a Harvest Moonshine recipe with calls for "8 pints (20 cups) water". Really, the pints measurements are the only "confusing" aspect, (if you are so inclined to be confused).
ALL US recipes use cups, tbsp, tsp, drops, pinches, pounds, ounces, & parts......and so does Ms. West. However, if you prefer your recipes in a different format than given, you can always write down your own version in your Book of Shadows. I had no problems following the recipes though.
This book has so many great recipes & craft/gift ideas it would be a shame to allow fear of simple math to scare you away. Here is a review of the Chapters & content which will hopefully help you in your decision on whether you would like this book:

Exploring Spellcraft: How to Create and Cast Effective Spells ReviewI really liked this book. Most Wicca 101 books come with a chapter on magick spells and Magickal Correspondences. This book basically takes that chapter and blows it up into something a little more useful.
However it doesn't contain any info on raisng and focusing power or using visualizations so if you don't already have a book on that (Laurie Cabot, Scott Cunningham, Silver Ravenwolf etc.) yer gonna have a recipe book. I think it makes a good companion piece to a book that teaches a specific magickal path.
Note: Conservative Wiccans aren't gonna like this one, it challenges the Law of 3 and the idea of not using person specific love spells. If you have serious problems with that i'd stay away from this one.Exploring Spellcraft: How to Create and Cast Effective Spells Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Spells and Spellcraft ReviewI have reviewed this book, and found it thusly:
As an eclectic solitaire, and not a Wiccan, this book has a lot of merit. For those wishing to know of Wicca, it is a good read.
This book has the opportunity to inform, teach, and be a window into an area of personal spirituality that is still a mystery to a great deal of the population. To the reader-to-be, always read well, meditate, question, evaluate what you realize as answers, and examine them as self-truths, or just another book for the home reference shelf, as one writer has spoken.
But by all means, please support this author and buy her book. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Spells and Spellcraft Overview
