Hex and Spellwork: The Magical Practices of the Pennsylvania Dutch ReviewThe first reviewer of this book states that the work is too short and glosses over many things. This is true. It is also true that I, too, agree that the author's attempt to conceal his identity is "annoying". There is also a section towards the middle of the book, which goes into a lengthy description of the history and development of alphabets and writing. It comes off more like filler than necessary material. And, lastly Herr has a potentially debatable section on the magical use of barn (i.e., "hex") signs. There has been little scholarly agreement on just *what* these signs are for. Some Dutchmen have said that they are "just for nice" (decoration).
However, with these objections aside, one cannot go wrong with this book. It is a valuable alternative and remedy to works such as "Silver Ravenwolf's" (i.e., Jenine Trayer's) work "American Folk Magic", which is a re-release of her previous book "Hexcraft".
Herr's book is as close to the straight stuff as one will come without learning from a real powwow or hexenmeister. Herr does the subject justice by keeping the practice firmly within its cultural and spiritual roots. Yes, this is magic(not "magick"). But, this is also *Christian* work: because Jesus Christ is, indeed, the true foundation of all "hex" work for the real powwow practitioner.
This book is a good starting place for one who has no idea what real hex work is like, but would like to find out. It gives a very good starting place, and provides an adequate bibliography for those who wish to dig into the subject further.
I highly recommend that those interested in powwow purchase this work in addition to Lee R. Gandee's "Strange Experience". Also, add to the collection: Hohman's "Long Lost Friend", Albertus Magnus' "Egyptian Secrets", and "The Sixth & Seventh Books of Moses".Hex and Spellwork: The Magical Practices of the Pennsylvania Dutch Overview

Practical Protection Magick: Guarding & Reclaiming Your Power ReviewThis book is ok. It's a really good starting place for most people, and it's something I would recommend if Jane Doe asked me what to do about protection and defense. This sort of book is desperately needed. I'm glad it's out there. The author did some great things, and she fell woefully short in a few key areas. I'll break it down:
The Good
1. She starts with a quiz to inventory your psychic proclivities, then helps you work throughout the book to understand how they make you strong and vulnerable against different challenges. Different kinds of attack are broken down into what kinds of warning bells you might get and how to handle them. Good stuff.
2. The emphasis on the bulk of what we all encounter being unintentional or not necessarily malicious is important. We all have the urge to strike out when threatened. Giving readers practical mundane things to do and gracious yet firm ways to handle situations is excellent. You will read it and go, "Oh THAT'S how to handle the guy who creeps me out at work." And you will feel better about it having smooth, simple ways to deal with it.
3. There are some things people at every level of experience can learn. No matter what path you follow, you won't have to worry about karmic repercussions from using her methods. It's mostly defensive work.
The Not So Good:
1. Sections on specific kinds of attack, like psychic vampires, are very repetitive, yet they present an incomplete picture of the sort of attack and a very limited number of ways to deal with it. I would have loved to have seen explanations of different shielding techniques and ways to visualize them. I don't have to work to avoid touches from people if I've made my aura spiky at them and kept them at a distance in the first place.
2. The emphasis on common problems is good, but what about when what you're facing is an especially malicious version of a common threat? Variations to add oomph to things like house cleansing rituals is something easy and really important when someone needs it. Sage, holy water, and intent aren't always enough to really send something packing. In the same vein, stronger warding or even minor offensive techniques should be in here. Mirroring techniques to send an attack back on the sender have been around for ages and don't violate even strict interpretations of "harm ye none".
3. For such a sorely needed book, I was really sad that it didn't go beyond what I consider to be very basic, intro-level stuff. I get being cautious with the kind of knowledge you hand out when you don't know the experience level or capability of your readers. It's wise. But there's this whole level above what's in this book that is still safe, still doable by beginners, and are bigger and stronger than what's in here. There's a big gap between this and some of the more aggressive Traditional methods that not everyone is comfortable with (or should be doing). I really wanted a book I could hand off to people that would teach simple, useful techniques beyond the basic stuff they should already be doing. This isn't it, but it's not a bad place for people to start.Practical Protection Magick: Guarding & Reclaiming Your Power Overview

The Cinderella Curse ReviewI'm a finisher, so I kept reading this, thinking it would improve as it progressed. It didn't. I was left thinking perhaps this was a 'novel' texted in pieces by a teen text wiz. As literature, even light romance lit, it ain't magic. It's choppy, fairly obvious and the friend is more interesting than is the main character. Or perhaps that's because we see less of her and hear less of her thoughts. I thought, '70 pages. Should be a quick read.' It seemed a lot longer. The Cinderella Curse OverviewPlease note that this is a novella equivalent to 70 pages of a hardback novel. From the acclaimed author of Reunion comes the hilarious tale of a girl who whacks a witch, gets cursed, and becomes a pumpkin at midnight. Sound strange? She thinks so.Cindy had a fairy tale life - well, not literally - but she was pretty and popular. Then one fateful autumn day, while picking apples, she encountered a real-life witch. After accidentally clocking the witch on the head with her basket of apples, the angry witch put a spell on her. As Cindy would soon find out, she was destined to live out her nights turning into a pumpkin at midnight. Talk about a crimp in your social life! There is only one antidote for Cindy's terrible curse - if only she knew what it was. Hilarity ensues as Cindy attempts to lead a normal life as a part-time pumpkin.

HedgeWitch: Spells, Crafts & Rituals For Natural Magick ReviewI'll never understand why people are so mean. This is supposed to be a path of life that celebrates, not berates. I have seen many people post reviews saying that SRW talks down to her audience, speaks to us like children. Did you know that the New York Times is written on a high school level? She is speaking in a language that everyone can relate to. Reading her book is like having a conversation with her. Now, i have never read any other books on Hedge Witchery, she is my first, so i can't compare her views to the "real" views that some of you have issues with. But isn't it about what makes you feel good? What sits in your heart and soul and just feels right? If it is all about the rules and what is right or wrong, then join one of the traditional religions and go to church every week and follow a book of rules and regulations that are rigid and unchanging. That's not for me though. Whether or not the book is what you might consider "real" Hedge Witchery, all i know is that in the end, the words inside that book resonated with me and made me feel good. If you don't like it, or her, then don't read it. But don't tell other people what to do, let them decide for themselves.HedgeWitch: Spells, Crafts & Rituals For Natural Magick Overview

Utterly Wicked: Curses, Hexes & Other Unsavory Notions ReviewI read through this book rather quickly, as it is not all that difficult to read or understand. That is one of the signatures of works by Dorothy Morrison, easy to read and understand.
I also found myself nodding my head as I went through her basics for what she offers in this book. Yes, there is an ethics discussion.
And if you are under the impression that Ms. Morrison should have gone further into ethics, this book is not for you. Personally, I feel if you need a dose of ethics with a witch's book on hexes and curses, then you should do as she suggests in the opening of the book: Close this book now and put it back on the shelf.
Ms. Morrison does an excellent job covering the basics of our practices involving curses and hexes. And while she does explain that we should use this as last resort, she also points out that many times we have good reason and we should not ignore it.
So, moving on, the book is typical Morrison material. We are presented with the hows, the whys, and all the recipes to do. I love the "11" doll" material. Damn, I never thought of that! I also notice that much of the material is adapted from hoodoo basics and this is good. Hoodoo is a working tradition; working because it is effective. To adapt this material from a working practice is smarter than trying to make up your own. Why waste the efforts to create something that is already in place. I also think this is a great education in the workings of our native magical traditions.
This book contains the now famous "Swifting of Energy" working that everyone wants. It's a great spellworking! Just right for the beginner or the experienced witch.
There is a section on reversing hexes and curses as well. You never know when you may change your mind, or if someone else will whap you with some of this wonderful stuff.
If you've got the guts, if you know that it's now time for you to drop the fluffy ball and move into the real realm of witchcraft, this is an excellent primer. The recipes are wonderful and I recognized many of them. Others are great Morrison improvisations utilizing time honored traditions and sure fire workings. This is another one of Dorothy Morrison's instructional manuals that adapts tried and true magic and brings it up to date and into the real world. boudica

Marie's Book of Spells ReviewThis book is exactly as its described. It begins with an introduction as well as an explanation the tools you're going to need in order to cast spells, the space that's required, etc. There are 16 spells altogether, and they range in usefulness depending on what your needs are exactly. For instance, you may never need to help a friend find a job, so the spell "To Send Employment to a Friend" may never be useful. The spells I liked the most were the one for creating a wishing well and the one to "Increase One's Beauty," which is really more a spell for confidence. As an experienced spellcaster I appreciated the candid look at the magical arts. The author's writing style is very romantic and it just draws you into a whole other world.Marie's Book of Spells OverviewThis collection of spells and magical advice is not restricted to one magical path or religion. What entails is an easy to use and understandable charm of a book that introduces readers to the art of casting spells. Whether you're interested in healing a loved one, gaining prosperity, of finding peace within yourself, Marie's Book of Spells will assist you in discovering a personal magic. It is an excellent first foray into the magical realm and will inspire readers to approach the arts with a romanticized view of the world.
