PowerSpells: Get the Magical Edge in Business, Work Relationships, and Life ReviewI also wrote a review of Easy Enchantments by the same author and some of my comments in regard to that book are repeated here. I am not Wiccan and don't purport to be especially informed about Wiccan traditions and rituals. I can see how a practised Wiccan might find some of the author's spell recipes too simplistic, but, as a lover of kitchen and folk witchcraft, I think they're both evocative and, on the whole, effective.
The author is a superb writer able to coax a quality of tactile, enjoyably sensuous mystery from her descriptions and anecdotes. As far as I'm concerned, that in itself is magical. After reading the book I became much more aware of the esoteric properties inherent in all kinds of everyday foods and products, which caused me to feel more connected with the "magically vibrational" potential of my quotidian surroundings.
I tried the Preservation Spell when I was really depressed about my future and not sure where to focus my energies or whether to give up trying to be an artist. About an hour after doing the spell I went out for a walk and found a beautiful leather bookmark lying on the sidewalk printed with the words "Man cannot exist without dreams and dies if he gives them up". I know this may not sound like much but it definitely answered my question.
I've tried quite a few of the other spells. Not all of them have worked but most of them have in some form or another.

The Spellcasting Picture Book: Visual tools for grown-up magic (Volume 2) ReviewIf you think magic and the casting of spells is Serious Business then do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT read the rest of this review, and on pain of the death of your supercilious ego, avoid Diana Rajchel's The Spell-Casting Picture Book.
"This isn't a teaching spellbook or a beginner's book. If I wanted to spend forever hacking at the same basic crap other Wiccan writers get stuck with, I'd have done it. I decided to skip that part and go straight to the spells. There are a couple basics - grounding and centering - but for the rest, a search on USENET under FAQs on energy work will do you just fine."
In one sense, that sums up what this Spellbook is about - no nonsense, no mucking around, no moralizing, and totally direct. In another, it completely belies the absolute FUN that the reader will find herein. A spellbook, fun? Absolutely.
Moreover, this is an exploration in creativity, pushing boundaries and finding fresh perspectives. I found the sheer delight and fun on every page to be nearly as wonderful as the spells themselves. (Which are, by the way, lucid, focused and powerful - much better than most spellwork I've reviewed over the years.)
The colors are rich and fluid, the spells themselves rhymes, often accompanied by gestures (pictures of Diana's hands are included). This is crude by most people's standard's but they do not lack power for all of that. If you want complicated, look elsewhere. If you want polished, it ain't here. If, on the other hand, you want to read what a REAL witch has in her Book of Shadows (well, kind of: my pages aren't nearly so colorful, but I'm a frustrated and frustrating artist) then get this one.

It is basic enough that one can read it with no pror knowledge and get and overview of both. Addison is very gentle as he introduces the enneagram, which is uncommon since the enneagram is base on compulsions. The Druid Magic Handbook: Ritual Magic Rooted in the Living Earth ReviewOn my trip to Iowa, one of the cool things that happened is that I got JMG's "The Druid Magic Handbook"...for free!
While in Ames, a friend of mine and I were talking about art and art patronage. I am a struggling artist myself. Seeing as I am always hand-to-mouth, my friend mentioned wouldn't it be cool if you had a patron? They asked where I wanted to go. I said the local bookstore. We went there, and sure enough, "The Druid Magic Handbook" was on the shelves as I had hoped it would be. So I set it aside in a stack of books I wanted to look through. Then before we left the store, my friend said they would like to help me as a sort of patron, and offered to buy a book of my choice. So...duh, I selected JMG's book :-)
So I read it on my flight back to Montana. And there are some really really good things in there, such as:
-The idea of disenchantment and RE-enchantment of the natural world as a part of the Druid path...something that I had come to Druidry hoping that others sought! Back in the 80s I had done an art exhibit called "Earth Songs." And Ishi, played by Graham Greene, in the movie "Last of His Tribe" heard the song of the earth, asked Professor Kroeber (Jon Voight) if he could hear the earth singing, and Voight pretended he could (I think I can) and Ishi said, "What she say?" And was so upset when he learned the Professor could not hear it after all and was pretending. And then Ishi began to sing the song he heard the Earth singing. We Indians sang our prayers...songs are vital to this effort of working with the natural world. Hearing their songs, and singing back:
chanting (song) / en-chanting (put the song into) / dis-en-chanting (removing a song which was put into) / re-en-chanting (replacing a removed song)
- The idea of the Tree of Life relating to mapping space, while the Wheel of Life is a map of time...and one can use BOTH..brilliant!
- The comparison not only of the five hermetic elements and the druid elements...but the comparison of the five elements with the states of matter affirmed by science (fire=energy, water=fluid, earth=solid, air=gaseous, spirit=time/space continuum)..brilliant stuff!
- I also really like that JMG cautioned people from rushing out and messing with sacred places, that the neglected, ruined, and harmed placed are the places that need "re-enchantment"-- don't mess with places that retain their song! Leave the Medicine Wheel in peace, leave Mount Shasta in peace. See what you can do in that vacant lot, your backyard, that neglected patch of woods. Plus it is a longterm effort to do this work, from the acorn a mighty oak will grow, even though we may only live long enough to see a sprout
There was some GREAT new ways of thinking about magic in there, ways that JMG described it that made immediate intuitive sense as never before. And the way he described the three Druid elements of calas, nwyfre, and gwyar, well, I finally "got it"!

It tells you how to make certain infusions, candles, among other natural magic spells. It offered really good tables, although they are not complete. He offers an excellent bibliography for you to pursue more info to fill in the gaps that he admits leaving. I got a little lost in the last chapter on alchemy. I felt that he could have explained that a little better (I admit that I don't know very much about it). Spellcaster: Book of Magick ReviewI can't rave enough about Spellcaster! I've always wanted to learn to cast a spell, make a circle and use all the right correstpondences. This book has everything I needed, right down to how to make a besom (witch broom). I found a list of crystals and what they do, feathers, moon phases, all the herbs and so much more. The list of spellcasting tools and how to make an altar was fantastic. I've learned so much already!
All the spells in the book can be used for me or for someone I care about. There is a cool section for more advanced witches to make their own spells too. I really like the sheets in the back that help me while I learn to make a spell of my own. I tried a wishing spell...and my wish came true! How great is that? It gives concise directions and simple everyday substitutions for ancient or hard-to-find ingredients used to create magick spells.
Its author, Lexa Rosean, has been practicing the magickal arts since 1982, and she presents this much-needed contemporary spellbook for ease of use by the burgeoning population of Wiccans eveywhere. And the spells themselves are pleasant and easy. For example, a spell to induce prophetic dreams involves placing a poppy-seed bagel under your pillow before sleep.
If you are of the Olde Schoole of Magick, be admonished that the contemporary nature of the book may take some getting used to -- after all, who would have guessed that a Fig Newton bar would end up being a principal ingredient in a powerful love ritual, or that waxed, mint-flavored dental floss could be used to bind a spell? -- but overall, the magickal workings presented herein should be a delightful experience.

Simple Spells for Hearth and Home: Ancient Practices for Creating Harmony, Peace, and Abundance ReviewIt seems to me that the majority of spell books on the market focus on love and prosperity, almost to the exclusion of anything else. With that in mind it's refreshing to see a spell book promoting harmony and happiness, especially in the home, where unfortunately it is oftentimes lacking. This book covers practical advice, correspondence tables and spells for moving in, safety, nurturing and love, health and joy for grandparents, coziness, healing, and finding buyers. I especially like the section on mood shifting for fire, earth, air and water signs. The last portion of the book covers spells for holidays - traditional and "nature" (read: pagan). I thought the spells for the Sabbats were very lacking and that's why I took off one star... The Book of Spells II: A Sequel to the Book of Spells ReviewOk... no you shouldn't buy this book if you've never studied magic(k) before. I work in a new age bookstore and the original Book of Spells is most often purchased by children and younger teens who look at it and are impressed by the cover and the title as if the thing was written by merlin back in the dark ages. The book isn't going to teach spirituality but it didn't ever make that claim. It teaches a litle bit of magical theory in it's opening chapter but I think there are better choices for successful spellcasters (I recommend Magic for the Solitary Practitioner by Nancy B. Watson.)
BUT... after you've been doing all of the regular candle spells and seasonal rites for a while and coming up with your own stuff and working with divinity SOMETIMES it's fun to crack open a cute lil spellbook and try it that way. Most magical folk I know are playful people and sometimes the idea of getting yer spells from a "tome" like this one is appealing. Plus it looks so neat on the coffee table with the beautiful photos and well OCCASIONALLY it's fun when your non-magical friends see something like this in your house.
This one is much better than its predecessor (I have, to date only felt compelled to cats one spell from the original). The chapters are organized in a way I haven't seen before. I am used to spells being listed either by need genre (love, prosperity, protection) or alphabetically by spell name. Green organized them by planets, zodiac, elements, kitchen magick, dreams etc. an approach I liked. Also the spells in this one have a LOT of room for personalization, for example a Wreath created for career success will be decorated with objects that appeal to your career choices. Also the elemental spells are geared toward using the elements to improve other magical works and taht's always a good idea.
So it's a fun book for the person who already has 20 books on paganism in general, it's actually useful, and the art is great (i bought the book originally just because the guy pictured in the Pluto and sweet dreams spells is pretty cute).The Book of Spells II: A Sequel to the Book of Spells Overview

I am responding to Kim Scudazio's 'rave' review of the book, which seems to have not worked for her. However, this book is not a joke and the magic does work. For example, I was informed that the love cake was made on three separate occasions and each time an engagement was announced within a few days. Also, when working with magic, it will only work for those who are ready for love to come into their lives. I suggest to Kim that perhaps, leaving a review of such scathing nature may point to the fact that she has trouble in the love department anyway. But we are all entitled to our opinions. However, take a look inside the book. It is simple, natural magic, aimed at those who have no deep experience of the magical world. And, like my other magical books, the spells and potions do work very effectively. How To Be A Wicked Witch: Good Spells, Charms, Potions and Notions for Bad Days ReviewI have long been a fan of the no-nonsense writing style of Patricia Telesco. The title is what caught my eye, but the author is what made me buy it. I was NOT disappointed.
This book is a blend of practical approaches to modern witchery and older folk magic. She suggests easily-obtainable substitutes for the "budget-minded witch" and invites you to adapt spells to suit your individual purpose.
The title may be somewhat misleading to someone who doesn't bother to delve beyond it. It's not about curses and hexing, but about taking the phrase "wicked witch" and OWNING it; being proactive in your life, instead of letting things just happen to you. It's about turning an epithet into a badge of honor. (Women who take pride in being called a b**** will know exactly what I mean!)

The Way Of The Green Witch: Rituals, Spells, And Practices to Bring You Back to Nature ReviewI'm writing this review for two reasons. The first is to add my advice to skip this book. If you are new to Green Witchery there are other books far better and if you aren't new to it this book will be a waste of your time at best and piss you off at worst. My second reason is to make sure those not familiar with her other books don't miss out on her truly wonderful books because of this unfortunate misstep. I can't recommend Power Spellcraft and Solitary Wicca enough. Power Spellcraft is a wonderful book on pure Spellcraft(not High Magick) sans religion. Solitary Wicca is clear, concise and encourages the reader to think about why you are doing something instead of just learning how to do it. If you are in the market for a Wicca 201 book or a book on spellcraft seperate from religion, please read the reviews for the aforementioned books for more info. Witch on the Go: A Book of Spells to Take with You Review
Witch On The Go is a unique little book (literally a "little book" at 4 3/4" x 6 1/4" and 160 pages) that packs a big wallup. Don't be led astray by the cartoonish cover, or the authors rather breezy style. This is a book where every word counts - skimming will get you nowhere fast! The spells and other words of wisdom contained here are for those whose lives are crammed full to overflowing with "things to do, places to go and people to see". It is pointed out that full ritual is not necessary for all things, and that intent goes a long way towards manifesting results.
The backbone of this book is what Garrison calls her "Portable Spell Kit". It is small enough to fit into a purse, so that it can be carried around at all times, without being obvious. It rather reminds me of the medicine bags t hat Native American Shamans carry with them, although the contents differ greatly. Garrison's kit consists of the following items:An empty Altoids tin
A one-dram bottle of musk oil
A small quartz crystal
A book of matches
A few multi-colored birthday candles
Some Post-It notes
Some black thread
Some red thread
With the use of this kit, spells can be done at any time - at home, at work, on vacation, or while traveling. In this manner, not only will you never have to miss honoring a Sabbat or Moon Cycle, but you can release (or call in) whatever energies that you need at any given time. Most of the items are self explanatory. The quartz crystal is used to program whatever issue is being worked on, the Post-it notes are used to write the spell work on, and the threads are used to bind the spell - which can be very important in instances where burning the spell paper would attract all too much attention.
The work discussed in this book should not be taken lightly, but the practitioner should realize that an abbreviated form of ceremony or ritual may be better than none at all. Know what you can and cannot do, and when you can and cannot do it. Don't light candles in the ladies room - you are bound to get into trouble because of the match, if not the candle! If you insist on using salt to create a circle, less is better, and easier to carry. Connecting with the Four Directions can just as easily be done mentally as out loud. There is also a wonderful section on easy to obtain herbs, and their best uses (such as apples for love spells, and coffee to hurry up the timing of a spell). The days of the week are also listed, along with what spells are best done on each day. Oh, by the way, be sure to include a compass, so that you know where your directions are!
There is a section in this book that is absolutely magickal! Garrison discusses the normal everyday things in life that we all have to do - like waking up in the morning, and how they can be done in a sacred, conscious manner , wherever we are. Stretching to form a cross, and mentally chatting with the guides at each of the four directions. Using the morning shower as a cleansing ritual. Stirring coffee with a cinnamon stick to consciously send your intention into your coffee cup. Adding essential oils to skin lotions to place appropriate energies in your day. (I used to - OK, I still do! - use jewelry in the same manner. I have an onyx ring that gives me courage and helps me present myself at my most dignified best.) Cooking dinner, falling asleep ... these can become ritual activities. There are instructions here for reviewing ones day - in reverse - to release negative energy and "rewrite" bad endings. This alone is well worth the price of the book.
Now we get into actual spells, spells that can be done in traffic, spells for specific purposes - like getting the traffic moving again! Ummmm - you will want to check out how to insure that you have a parking space wherever you are going. I remember the time I was in a car full of witches, in Hawaii, headed for a New Year's Eve party. We were all bemoaning the fact that Honolulu is notorious for not having good parking, and what were we going to do. Our High Priestess was with us, and silenced us all by saying, in a very calm voice: "We are a car load of witches. How could there NOT be a parking space!"
I like that fact that Garrison includes Rune pieces and crystals in her spells. Different energies do work well together to manifest goals. Love spells - even a spell for road rage! Whatever one might need when on the go - it is here. To help things along, there is a concise listing of animal, bird and insect symbols to add to the mix. The dates for each of the solstices are listed, along with abbreviated spells for each of them.
There is much, much more to this book - including an Appendix with a ritual for calling in the guardians. The book and kit will fit easily into most purses (or knapsacks). What a wonderful tool of empowerment - to be able to do whatever one wants to do, anywhere one needs to do it. Enjoy!

Silver's Spells for Prosperity ReviewAlot of negativity amongst these reviews. I think people are missing the point. Lady Silver IS a lineaged Witch and a Wiccan Priestess. She is very knowledgable. You all complain that it's all fluff, and real Witches write their own spells anyway... Ms. RavenWolf is writing these books for the BEGINNER...the person who needs a little help, the "new" Witch who needs a little help when it comes to composing a spell...I use her spells as templates, I never copy them word for word, and if you actually READ her words you'd realize that she recommends people to alter them to their specific goals anyway... And why must the Craft be so cold, and serious all the time...what's wrong with making it fun from time to time? Silver RavenWolf is my favorite Craft author and I will continue to buy her books, supporting her. As she promises, "If you keep reading, I'll keep writing." So if you don't like her books you've only yourselves to blame if you keep reading them.
