Fate of Thorik (Altered Creatures) ReviewI enjoyed this book, and look forward to further installments of this series. Those of us who enjoy fantasy literature always are looking for new worlds and characters to explore, but we're often disappointed. Too often it's more of the same, and Piers Anthony and J.R.R. Tolkien did it better. Wedgeworth may not be in their league yet, but he has created characters with depth and believability that we can care about, and the action keeps moving. The descriptions of Thorik's world are vivid in detail, yet they do not overwhelm the narrative. Plot turns and twists are reasonable, but not ridiculous. The story stands on its own, yet leaves the reader with an interesting cliffhanger to bring him or her back. A fine first offering.Fate of Thorik (Altered Creatures) OverviewFate of Thorik begins with a countdown to pending doom. Our heroes and heroines know the date, but not the location, of an imminent attack. Compounding the issue, they don't trust each other with the critical information they do possess.Struggling to find the truth, Thorik confronts an entirely new world to him with overwhelming magic, altered beasts, battle-risen undead, and even deceivers amongst his closest allies. Weighing upon Thorik's shoulders are his uncle's desire to control him, his mentor's obsession to vanquish the new rising evil, and Thorik's own internal demons of self-doubt. The land's destiny is in Thorik's hands, while his confidence and conviction to his beliefs will define his own fate.Fate of Thorik is the first of 6 books in the Altered Creatures saga about Thorik Dain's journey across unknown territory to save family, friends and the land he loves.

Celtic Traditions: Druids, Faeries, and Wiccan Rituals ReviewThis book is the best book I've read lately about the Celts, Faery, Druids, Celtic Gods, and Celtic Wicca. Sirona Knight covers all of these subjects in-depth and with intelligence. She obviously spent a great deal of time writing this book, and the information in it is both scholarly and experiential. She writes about the origins of the Celts, who the Druids and Faery are, and she also gives plenty of hands-on exercises. I have read many other books by this author, and each one of them is intelligent, articulate and very thought provoking. If you are interested in Celtic subjects and facts, read this book first!Celtic Traditions: Druids, Faeries, and Wiccan Rituals Overview

Healing the Highlander (Daughters of the Glen) ReviewHealing the Highlander was a great addition to this series! I love how Ms. Mayhue continues to build on the world and characters we encountered in her first books. Modern day Leah, who we encountered in previous novels, is the subject of this book along with battered and scarred highlander Andrew MacAlister. When I first started to read about Andrew I feared that he'd end up being a angry bitter character for the entire book like most scarred heroes I've encountered. I was so glad to see that Andrew remained determined and strong throughout the book, and while he did battle his insecurities and challenges stemming from his injury, he never let it get the best of him. Leah, complete with her own emotional scars, is rescued by Andrew from a loch and while she battles her own internal issues, we have the pleasure of seeing Leah's walls come down. Andrew and Leah are a wonderfully paired couple, both strong in their own ways and weak in others, and they both complement each other in how they face those weaknesses.
This book has all the elements of a lighthearted Romance. I especially loved how Ms. Mayhue conveyed that family goes beyond the immediate. Leah is transported to Medieval Scotland to escape the torture of a Nuadian Fae, and there she finds a family she has never met before. She embraces them and is embraced by them, forging new bonds of loyalty which sends her on quest to save them in this book.
Much like Ms. Mayhue's previous books, I was drawn into the writing, the story and the characters. I continue to love how these stories unfold, each highlighting specific characters, letting their stories be told and live independently and yet part of a whole. This seventh book in the series does not disappoint. I would strongly recommend reading these books in order since characters appear throughout the series and events that take place in previous books have an impact on things that happen in later ones (for example; how modern day Leah ended up in the past)

Fairy Spells: Seeing & Communicating with the Fairies ReviewThis small hardcover book is illustrated with many famous paintings from the past. It's an interesting mixture of things, as the author talks as much about angels as she does about faerie, relegating the latter to things of children and vegetation and other "lesser energies." That's probably the biggest issue I take with the book. In many ways, she makes work with fairy seem almost formulaic, providing information on fairy hours and special days and what she calls "fairy dieties."
Some of the advice given is very Christian in orientation, making this a good book for those who see faerie in that way. In it she writes "I who walk with angels would walk with the fairies," and describes a secret well of the heart called the Cup of Mary. Her spells are formulaic as well, with lots of poetry, and they link fairy with angels in a way that isn't comfortable for me.
Although I don't particularly like this book, I agree with her writing on the use of imagination and intuition as gateways to faerie. She stresses the importance of attitude and intent in working with them and I agree.
The book makes no references to other books, and no bibliography is included. It's not one I'd particularly recommend.

Moon Spell: Part One in the Tale of Lunarmorte (Volume 1) ReviewMoon Spell is a romantic fantasy with a feisty heroine, sexy alpha hero, and a wonderful mythology that pulls you in from the very first page. Not only do I love the plot to Moon Spell, which had sprinkles of true uniqueness throughout it, but I love the characters. Caia is a girl who starts off as quite reserved and then as she's taken through all the twists and turns (and there are many!) of rejoining the pack and discovering who she really is, she develops into this strong young woman who knows her own mind. The pack itself are full of wonderful, rambunctious, funny characters, and you really do forget that they're not real as you're reading about them. Finally I just loved the way Young uses Greek mythology to explain the existence of supernaturals, very different and exciting.
Now I can't wait for the next installment.
Pure escapism and a young adult novel for all ages!

Wings ReviewToday, I had the greatest difficulty trying to get my hands on this book. I first stopped at the local Troll (ha... ha... ha...) & Noble, hoping that since the book's publisher was HarperCollins, they'd have it. To my sadness, they didn't, and they didn't seem to understand why they didn't have it either. Hm. Fortunately, I managed to find it in an obscure bookstore that I have found has a much more reliable stash of YA goodies for sale. Yay discoveries!
Anyways, I agree with the reviewer who stated that the book starts a little slowly. I wasn't too enamored with David, as he's nice but nothing very interesting. When protagonist Laurel started growing flowers out of her back, that's when it caught my attention. Alas, not enough to interrupt my afternoon nap, but still, I continued the book after dinner.
About half-way through, it started getting really interesting.
First, we meet Tam. This guy has all the charms of Edward and none of the obnoxiousness. We meet him once, then spend some more time playing detective, and all the while I'm thinking "homg...homg... when are we going to see forestboy again?" Fortunately, there was no disappointment in sight! Hurrah! (Random Book-Thought Moment: Tam, you need to wear gloves whenever Laurel's in bloom. We readers can see right through your shenanigans. ) We got to see him multiple more times, and even lead up to a very pleasing climax, with lots of action and kick butt. As fascinating as he is, I'm glad he's not invincible. It's nice to have the heroine have some part in the butt-kicking ending.
Speaking of the butt-kick ending, I loved that. I apologize for using ambiguous terms in this review, but I'm avoiding spoiling any plot bunnies for readers on the fence who might be reading this review. (Subliminal message: read it, read it, read it!)
All in all? There are very few books that leave my hands slick with perspiration upon finishing the last page. This is one of them. I only hacked off one star because the beginning lagged a bit--not too much, but I admit my attention span is tiny tiny. And naps are good. From the middle on, though, it earns five stars and more. I can see why someone on the author's website stated this book would "change the world." In a Twilight sense, at least.
Read it, fellow walkers of the written page!Wings Overview

Maizie And The Sorcerer's Spell ReviewIf you're a fan of fairy tales, "Maizie and the Sorcerer's Spell" by Melva J. Henderson is a book that you and your children will want to read again and again.
It's the story of Maizie Trimble and her little brother, Timmy, and their terrible situation: their mother has died, their father has remarried, and their new stepmother (Rhotundra) has come to stay and brought along three new step-siblings for Maizie and Timmy.
Needless to say, the stepmother is evil, the step-siblings are dreadful, and they make life miserable for Maizie and Timmy. Their father is away from home, so Rhotundra and her children's reign of terror is unchallenged. The children's dog, Lazzlo, is their only comfort.

Then, one day, Rhotundra locks the two in the woodbox so that she can take her own children for a picnic in the woods. While waiting in the woodbox, Maizie discovers a teeny, tiny rhyming sprite named Puddles - and everything changes for the children. Puddles is full of magic and tells stories about the children's faery blood. After she introduces the children to their extended faery family, they learn about the mystery surrounding their mother's disappearance and Modoc the Sorcerer and his terrible spell.
Ms. Henderson is a talented writer (I love the rhymes), but more importantly she is a wonderful storyteller. You'll feel Maizie's despair at the start of the story as she worries about her younger brother and misses her mother; you'll be just as excited as she is when she learns how to use her powers. And you'll definitely be cheering at the ultimate showdown because you will really care what happens to Maizie. Is Rhotunda just an evil stepmother, or something more sinister? What has to happen before Maizie's tenth birthday? What is Modoc's spell? What is the scent of lilacs? Is the Trimble family lost forever? You'll just have to read "Maizie and the Sorcerer's Spell" to find out. Our family looks forward to more books from Ms. Henderson.

Illusions (Aprilynne Pike) ReviewILLUSIONS, by Aprilynne Pike, is the HIGHLY anticipated third book in the Wings series. If Wings and Spells had romance and love triangularity, this book multiplied the respective tension by a thousand. For those who have heard my thoughts on the matter I am 100% Team Tamani and I was very pleased with his presence in this book.
The first books in the series explored the relationship between Laurel and David in our world (Wings) and Laurel and Tamani in Avalon (Spells). In Illusions, David and Tamani went head to head to win Laurel's heart. For as much as some roll their eyes at a love triangle, I really love this one even at the expense of our heroine. Since her memories of her past in Avalon were wiped away all Laurel really knows is her human life. In her effort to stay with what she knows and is comfortable with, she leans toward being to David. But Tamani's presence awakens her roots (plant pun intended) to where she was from originally. Talk about being torn literally in half.
All of the typical characters from the previous books came back for more action, but Pike introduced Yuki a foreign exchange student to the story. I was interested but wary of her supposed shyness. Tamani played his part well to get her to open up to him but her secrets were held tight.
Along with the romantic tension, Pike stepped up the action and danger that Laurel faced in the wake of a mysterious threat. I went back and forth in my head wondering who was causing problems, but Pike's talent for suspense kept me guessing until the very end then dropped a massive cliffhanger! These books keep me coming back for more and fans of this series will not be disappointed.Illusions (Aprilynne Pike) Overview

Spells (Aprilynne Pike) ReviewI was looking for a quick, escapist read a few weeks ago and picked up "Wings." I had heard great things about it, and while it wasn't quite as amazing as everyone had said, it was enjoyable. I was intrigued enough by the character Tamani to want to find out more.
"Spells" was a decent read. I debated between 3 and 4 stars, and decided on 4 stars because of Tamani. Girls, say it with me: "TEAM TAMANI ALL THE WAY." "Spells" wore a little thin in a few parts, and here's why: Laurel cries. A lot. Laurel is needy. A lot. Laurel and David make out. A lot. Honestly, it felt like every few pages Laurel and David were making out, and it got pretty nauseating after awhile. I liked David just fine after reading "Wings," but after "Spells," I don't know how anyone could be Team David. All of the Laurel/David chemistry from "Wings" vanished, so every time they spewed lovey words and kissed, it felt really strange and forced. I like a good romance as much as the next girl, but I was SO tired of the make out sessions by the end of the book. I have hope that making David annoying in this book is all part of a big plan to eventually bring Laurel and Tamani together. I don't know how ANYONE could be cheering for David at this point.
And poor Tamani. Laurel's treatment of him was completely appalling. She toyed with him and strung him along to the point where I really couldn't stand her by the end. Let's hope Laurel was acting like this so we can see the process of her maturing and growing as a character in later books. Go Shar for finally putting Laurel in her place regarding her deplorable treatment of Tamani. Poor Tamani seemed a little defeated for a lot of the book, as he wasn't quite as confident and flirtatious as he is in "Wings." Pining for Laurel is just sucking the soul out of his character. Let's hope he comes back as his charismatic, charming self in Book 3 because I'm weary of selfish Laurel using him and bringing him down!
And the conclusion? Anyone who's read the book knows what I'm talking about. I kind of felt like how I did when I read "Little Women" for the first time and literally threw the book against the wall when Jo refused Laurie. At least there will be two more books for Laurel to mature and make the right choice.
I have faith in you, Aprilynne Pike, that you'll eventually give us readers the conclusion we're all cheering for. I understand that there are two books after this one so you can't exactly resolve the love triangle just yet. All I'm asking is that eventually Laurel will grow up and be with Tamani, and please give us at least one book where she and Tamani are happily together (conflict is okay...just let them face it together). Don't pull a Jane Austen (my favorite author) and make me read 400 pages waiting for the two character to get together, and then I only get to relish five pages where they're finally happy.Spells (Aprilynne Pike) Overview
