Fate of Thorik (Altered Creatures) ReviewI enjoyed this book, and look forward to further installments of this series. Those of us who enjoy fantasy literature always are looking for new worlds and characters to explore, but we're often disappointed. Too often it's more of the same, and Piers Anthony and J.R.R. Tolkien did it better. Wedgeworth may not be in their league yet, but he has created characters with depth and believability that we can care about, and the action keeps moving. The descriptions of Thorik's world are vivid in detail, yet they do not overwhelm the narrative. Plot turns and twists are reasonable, but not ridiculous. The story stands on its own, yet leaves the reader with an interesting cliffhanger to bring him or her back. A fine first offering.Fate of Thorik (Altered Creatures) OverviewFate of Thorik begins with a countdown to pending doom. Our heroes and heroines know the date, but not the location, of an imminent attack. Compounding the issue, they don't trust each other with the critical information they do possess.Struggling to find the truth, Thorik confronts an entirely new world to him with overwhelming magic, altered beasts, battle-risen undead, and even deceivers amongst his closest allies. Weighing upon Thorik's shoulders are his uncle's desire to control him, his mentor's obsession to vanquish the new rising evil, and Thorik's own internal demons of self-doubt. The land's destiny is in Thorik's hands, while his confidence and conviction to his beliefs will define his own fate.Fate of Thorik is the first of 6 books in the Altered Creatures saga about Thorik Dain's journey across unknown territory to save family, friends and the land he loves.

Cleah: The Lost Fury Chronicles (The Otherworld) ReviewCleah is a wonderful heroine who attempts to always do the right thing, although maybe a little too much. However, she is likable and I found myself cheering for her throughout. Her companion on this journey, Ronan, is a bit more flawed, making him more dynamic in the story. Both characters grow-up during their time in the Otherworld and are forced to take on new roles and challenges leading them to see each other in new ways.
The Otherworld is a fun read. The story is a coming-of-age tale full of adventure, magic, battles, and even a touch of romance. The plot of the story is well executed and the pacing keeps the pages turning.
Overall, I found this to be a wonderful fantasy. There were a few instances where I was confused by how another character were presented in the story and also some minor technical errors in the writing. However, it was easy to forgive and continue reading through the story.Cleah: The Lost Fury Chronicles (The Otherworld) OverviewLong ago, in ancient Eire, lived a young orphaned slave named Cleah. Her life is shattered when raiders destroy her home and she is forced to find safety in the Otherworld, where fairies, trolls and dangers await as well as the possibility of love. Cleah soon realizes that in order to survive and return to her own World, she must first learn to fight and to love; and, she must uncover the tangled truth of her origins.

Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures ReviewI've been fascinated with mermaids all my life. I have recently been trying to collect as many books as possible for my personal library. A couple of months ago, my obsession turned to mermaids. I ordered this book and another that mostly contained pictures.
If you're looking for facts on mermaids, mermen, and other types of merfolk (there are more than you think), this book is for you.
This book contains several mermaid legends from around the world. It covers the different types of water folk, grouping them by the waters they inhabit: Rivers, Small Streams and Waterfalls, Desert and Arrid Regions (Who knew?), Swamps, Fens, and Wetlands, and finally Lakes. There is also a section of other kinds of water creatures, such as dolphins and hippocampus.
In addition to these facts, there are sections on how to contact merfolk and use water magick. None of which I have tried yet but maybe someday. Even if you find that a little ridiculous, the book is worth it for the other information it supplies.
There are illustrations, in black and white, most from Clipart. If you're looking for a book with mostly pictures of mermaids, I recommend Mermaids (Magical Beings) by Elizabeth Ratisseau.Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures Overview

Fairy Spells: Seeing & Communicating with the Fairies ReviewThis small hardcover book is illustrated with many famous paintings from the past. It's an interesting mixture of things, as the author talks as much about angels as she does about faerie, relegating the latter to things of children and vegetation and other "lesser energies." That's probably the biggest issue I take with the book. In many ways, she makes work with fairy seem almost formulaic, providing information on fairy hours and special days and what she calls "fairy dieties."
Some of the advice given is very Christian in orientation, making this a good book for those who see faerie in that way. In it she writes "I who walk with angels would walk with the fairies," and describes a secret well of the heart called the Cup of Mary. Her spells are formulaic as well, with lots of poetry, and they link fairy with angels in a way that isn't comfortable for me.
Although I don't particularly like this book, I agree with her writing on the use of imagination and intuition as gateways to faerie. She stresses the importance of attitude and intent in working with them and I agree.
The book makes no references to other books, and no bibliography is included. It's not one I'd particularly recommend.

A Wintertide Spell ReviewForesta's Queen Geneva is on the hunt for her erring husband. It seems her kingly husband has been cursed to love 13 women before he's 50. The Queen is pregnant for the third time and hoping for a boy, in spite of being cursed with only female children. I can't say too much more without spoiling the story, but Ms. Wallace's story is delightful and charming, if you don't mind a realistic description of childbirth.A Wintertide Spell OverviewIf the King is fated to love thirteen women before he turns fifty, is he still husband material? One cold, snowy Wintertide Eve, Queen Geneva of Foresta tracks her straying spouse in an attempt to discover where exactly he goes at night. Has he met his next great love already? Will he put her and their three children aside? As Geneva labors over the solution to her husband's curse, King Reginald is attempting to discover a solution for a problem of his own--and for the entire Middle Kingdoms. This 7500 word short story is a stand-alone prequel to A Spell for Susannah.

Fairy Realm #9: The Peskie Spell Review[note: this review was dictated to me by my seven year old daughter who has read most of this series. Mostly her mother has been reading this series to her for a couple of years but now she's old enough to read (or re-read!) them herself. We now own the whole series.]
"I really liked when they walked on the Ribbon Road to Dally Glade to get the Sky-Mirror flower. This book in number nine in the series and it is my second favorite book in the series. My first favorite "The Third Wish" -- the third book in the series.
I think lots of girls will like this series because it is magical and there are lots of fairies, unicorns and elves."Fairy Realm #9: The Peskie Spell Overview

Maizie And The Sorcerer's Spell ReviewIf you're a fan of fairy tales, "Maizie and the Sorcerer's Spell" by Melva J. Henderson is a book that you and your children will want to read again and again.
It's the story of Maizie Trimble and her little brother, Timmy, and their terrible situation: their mother has died, their father has remarried, and their new stepmother (Rhotundra) has come to stay and brought along three new step-siblings for Maizie and Timmy.
Needless to say, the stepmother is evil, the step-siblings are dreadful, and they make life miserable for Maizie and Timmy. Their father is away from home, so Rhotundra and her children's reign of terror is unchallenged. The children's dog, Lazzlo, is their only comfort.

Then, one day, Rhotundra locks the two in the woodbox so that she can take her own children for a picnic in the woods. While waiting in the woodbox, Maizie discovers a teeny, tiny rhyming sprite named Puddles - and everything changes for the children. Puddles is full of magic and tells stories about the children's faery blood. After she introduces the children to their extended faery family, they learn about the mystery surrounding their mother's disappearance and Modoc the Sorcerer and his terrible spell.
Ms. Henderson is a talented writer (I love the rhymes), but more importantly she is a wonderful storyteller. You'll feel Maizie's despair at the start of the story as she worries about her younger brother and misses her mother; you'll be just as excited as she is when she learns how to use her powers. And you'll definitely be cheering at the ultimate showdown because you will really care what happens to Maizie. Is Rhotunda just an evil stepmother, or something more sinister? What has to happen before Maizie's tenth birthday? What is Modoc's spell? What is the scent of lilacs? Is the Trimble family lost forever? You'll just have to read "Maizie and the Sorcerer's Spell" to find out. Our family looks forward to more books from Ms. Henderson.

The Magic Knot (Love Spell Paranormal Romance) ReviewIt's not every day you read a book where the heroine is a rather dull-seeming accountant. Perhaps Rosenwyn Tremain is a bit dull but her life changes overnight when she finds herself driving to Cornwall to carry out an accountancy check on a pub. When she arrives at the pub she meets twin brothers Michael and Niall O'Connor and from that point on nothing is the same. She feels a strange connection to Niall but he's reserved and seems to be hiding something. Part of her reasoning to visit Cornwall is to search for her father, a man she doesn't remember; however there's more to her Dad than she can possibly imagine and meeting him starts her on a quest, along with Niall, Michael and another ususual male, to rescue a whole race of piskies and to attempt to help Niall keep his sister safe.
Rose is a good heroine, a women who's fairly down-to-earth and who is able to take rather dramatic events in her stride, but a woman who also knows to focus on people as the most important thing. Niall, however, was a rather unsatisfactory hero for me; he is a bit too moody and reserved and has a dreadful tendency to not tell Rose what's going on so she's constantly in the dark. The other characters were well described but didn't really ring entirely true for me.
The setting in Cornwall and then Ireland was interesting enough although our English/Irish protagonists slipped into using American language at times, which was rather incongruous. There were some rather dramatic plot events which I felt weren't always handled very well and the central romance didn't feel particularly romantic. However the story was interesting with good pacing and the change in setting from Cornwall to Ireland was also good.
This book was apparently the winner of the 2008 American Title IV contest; although it was a reasonable read it wasn't anything special, at least for this reader, but those who like fairy/sidhe/magical stories should enjoy it.
