Arcana Evolved Spell Treasury ReviewThis book adds hundreds of new spells to the already impressive list from Arcana Unearthed and Evolved. For D&D players, many will seem familiar, but there are also plenty of new ones. Even the familiar spells are tweaked somewhat, with new names sometimes, and added heightened and diminished effects. The only problem you might have with this book is the overwhelming number of options. There is a extremely handy .pdf that can be downloaded from Monte Cooke's site that lays out all of the new and old spells in a single comprehensive list. After using this variation of the core d20 spell system, you'll never want to go back to the old Fireball, not after seeing the equivalent spell of Sorcerous Blast.Arcana Evolved Spell Treasury Overview

STEVE JACKSON'S SORCERY: THE SORCERY SPELL BOOK AND THE SHAMUTANTI HILLS (BOX SET) ReviewThis is the first of four books from what was, in my opinion, the best fantasy role-playing game book series of the 1980s, by Steve Jackson (the one from the U.K.). As of May, 2004 these books are not available from Amazon U.S., but you can find them on the Amazon Canada web site as a newly republished boxed set. Let's hope they make it to the U.S. side soon. The adventures in each book are detailed with interesting characters, plot twists, and puzzles. Well worth the time of any fan of fantasy role-playing or "Choose Your Own Adventure" type books.STEVE JACKSON'S SORCERY: THE SORCERY SPELL BOOK AND THE SHAMUTANTI HILLS (BOX SET) Overview

Dungeon Master 4th Edition For Dummies ReviewPart of the fun of playing Dungeons and Dragons is being the story teller aka referee aka Dungeon Master. The idea is that other PC (Player Characters) are exploring your world and learning to overcome challenges that you create for them. The book is a good place to begin if you've never DM'd before since the authors are all skilled DM's and write from their own experiences.
You're given game etiquette and how to host a game session advice as well as PC styles of play whether it's the Rules Lawyer who invokes the rules at every opportunity or the Power Gamer who builds his character for ultimate power, you're given ideas on how to deal with these types of mind sets which has proved helpful to me.
I've DM'd in both 1st & 2nd edition of D&D and really felt lost in the new 3.0/3.5 editions. I have a lot of the rule books and supplements for 3.0 and I was kind of disappointed this was not covered in this book. I mean what does one do if they have a substantial investment in 3.0 edition books and all of a sudden, they're outdated?!?!?!?! I feel the authors could have discusses this a bit and given some ideas and ways around that setback.
For a Novice DM, the sample town given in the book is a great place to use as a backdrop for your first games. The book does a nice job of dichotomizing a campaign based series of adventures versus the single module type of ones and even mentioned that you can interconnect these modules to create an ongoing campaign. (FYI: A campaign is where the PC's use the same characters from start to finish whereas a module based style of play means the PC's can roll up new characters to play)
The Tens lists are helpful and many of the modules I'd never heard of before. (Used my own world primarily for 1st edition and Forgotten Realms for 2nd edition) Some of the modules I'm going to go out and get. In fact, Wizards of the Coast have graciously allowed many old 1st & 2nd edition modules & supplements to be downloaded free at their website.
Overall I think the book rates 4.5 stars but I was quite disappointed at no mention for how to reconcile 3.0 & 3.5 core rulebooks & supplements!Dungeon Master 4th Edition For Dummies Overview

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook: A Compiled Volume of Information for Players, Including Character Races, Classes, and Level Abilities; Spell Tables and Descriptions; Equipment Costs; Weapons Data; and Information on Adventuring ReviewHere's the ultimate version of the DMG for Gygax purists. You get all of the charm, advice, and "dark stuff" that was frowned upon as being "too esoteric" in the cleaner versions to come... Highlights include classic illustrations, using monsters as PCs, assassins and the use of poison, tribal spell casters (makes those giants and orcs a lot more interesting!), magic items with XP AND GOLD PIECE values (WHY did they stop doing this? WHY? ), old school psionics (for all those Illithids in GDQ1-7), the original "down to the last hit point" monster XP value charts, building NPCs and evocative dungeon settings the "Gygax way," player creation of spells and magic items, and much more; my personal favorite touch is the endless extolling of the virtues of encouraging the PCs in the early levels, while only a few pages later, we're treated to a graphic depiction of a game in progress that STRONGLY implies it's good to kill the PCs at 1st level, even if they do everything right... :) (see pp. 97-100) Hehe! A highly recommended pride piece for your retro-AD&D collection.Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook: A Compiled Volume of Information for Players, Including Character Races, Classes, and Level Abilities; Spell Tables and Descriptions; Equipment Costs; Weapons Data; and Information on Adventuring Overview

Wizard's Spell Compendium Volume One, Two, Three, Four ReviewThis four-volumn set is a MAGICAL Wizard's Spell Compendium of almost all Arcane Spells ever available for AD&D -- including ones teleported from earliest old basic D&D to later AD&D 2.5. Just about all Arcane Spells good for AD&D [to just before D&D 3.0] have been compiled in a fine-tuned uniform format -- arranged alphabetically -- but with lots of good spell-data in special charts in the start of book one and ending of book four to supplement the alphabetical format. The various Arcane Spells have been teleported from early older D&D manuals and modules to later AD&D manuals and modules -- including ones from the various world-settings such as Mystara, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun and Ravenloft -- and other less-well-known worlds. The magically artistic and written presentation from cover-to-cover completes the deep enchantment from ancient elder D&D and AD&D eras +++Wizard's Spell Compendium Volume One, Two, Three, Four Overview

Dorothea's Song Review"Dorothea's Song" by Ron Vitale mixes a modern (or at least the recent past) coming of age story with a grand fantasy quest. The author is able to juggle the requirements of both genres very well. The narrator is a high school student who is writing a fantasy story as a translation exercise for his French class. The fantasy story is where the title comes from and it involves elves, witches and large battles. In the modern chapters the author really captures the spirit of youth, his narrator seems real and not a cardboard thin character. Highly recommended.Dorothea's Song OverviewPeter is your typical high school student, but when his mother's failing marriage to his stepfather begins to split his family apart he copes by dreaming up the story of Dorothea, an elf who lives in the magical Bois d'or forest. Seizing the opportunity to release his frustrations in his French teacher's nightly writing assignment, Peter shares Dorothea's story with his teacher, imagining a world in which a coven of witches, a renegade elf lord and the humans have joined forces to conquer the elvish forest. With the Bois d'or on the verge of being invaded, Dorothea and her friends embark on a quest to find the wizard Mohan who will help them save their homeland. But the witches have other plans. They have set the three ancient evils of Anger, Fear and Lust against Dorothea. Can Dorothea survive the three curses and find Mohan in time to save her homeland? Dorothea's fate is in Peter's hands, but as his mother's marriage deteriorates and his infatuation with his French teacher increases, he must find a way to rise above the insanity and save not only Dorothea's home but also his own.

Spells & Spellcraft: Compendium of Mystic Lore (Legends & Lairs, d20 System) ReviewFantasy Flight Games scores big with this one. Subtitled "A Compendium of Mystic Lore," it is a treasure trove of magical options for D20 System gaming, which are mercifully NOT interlinked, allowing GMs to pick and choose what they like and what helps their campaigns.
The new spells range from the terribly useful (for example, a gradually enhanced spell series for restoring writings ranging from single documents to whole tomes) to the simply terrible (for example, "Burrowing Bony Digits," a Necromantic spell which sends forth up to five skeletal fingers to burrow their way into the bodies of targets who fail their Reflex saves, doing 1D6 impaling damage plus 1D6 additional burrowing damage for each three levels of the caster -- yecch!).
"The Craft of Magic" (one of my favorite parts) has sections on library construction, bookhunting (always necessary for that on-going Arcane research!), ideas for conducting magical research, constructing laboratories, new ideas for spell foci and components, and an extensive section on Bardic and Sorcerous magic, with new feats, PLUS a section on Ceremonial and Ritual Magic, both arcane and divine.
"New Types of Magic" introduced are "Ward Magic" (location-based enchantments used with "ward tokens" -- an idea once dealt with in "Volo's Guide to the North"), "Chaos Magic," "Cooperative Magic," and a long section on "Religion," dealing with new types of divine spell casters and "Small Gods," the "minor" deities which are so significant in the "real world" but which get such short shrift in gaming worlds. Also introduced is "Place Magic," the magic of arcane locations and nexuses of magical power, including religious shrines.
"The Mundane Made Magical" deals with Alchemy, Constructs, Magical Materials, and Familiars (with wonderful ideas on empowering them, making them finally WORTH the risk of having around). My favorite familiar must now be "the Grimoire," a tiny construct; suitably tinkered with, it is easily imagined as an autonomous, intelligent presence in the spellcaster's library, reading and interrogating other books to aid its master in research; I can readily imagine a canny sage having an entire library of mutually-referant books serving as so many processors in a library-sized magical "computer," with a Grimoire familiar as the interface!
"Magic Items" include Glyph Eggs (the weakest contribution of the book, in my opinion -- just another vehicle for storing magic spells) and Personal Growth Items (Open Gaming Content!), which are items which advance along with their owners, gaining powers and experience (and presumably becoming the original source of many magic items which may now be created with feats: before they were made as "created items," many had to "grow up" to be magical). There is also an Open Gaming Content section on Relics and the obligatory New magical Items section which every single D20 System book seems to have (although this one adds nine new Ioun Stone types).
"Spells & Spellcraft" is not an essential book, by any means, so I have only given it four stars, but, for those who like to play around with magic in their games, it is very, very, very fun and inspirational. I used someone else's copy for a while, but I simply had to buy one for myself so that I could access it whenever I wanted some quick inspiration on matters arcane. I give it a strong personal recommendation.Spells & Spellcraft: Compendium of Mystic Lore (Legends & Lairs, d20 System) Overview

The Weight of Blood (The Half-Orcs, Book 1) ReviewWhat would you get if you turned Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser into a pair of half-orc brothers, gave them severe inferiority complexes, moral ambiguity, and massive tempers, and then threw in a powerful religious zealot who sways them closer to the dark side than any individual should ever be comfortable with?
Why, you'd have "The Weight of Blood" by David Dalglish.
"The Weight of Blood" is an extremely dark fairy tale that tells the story of those aforementioned half-orc brothers, Qurrah and Harruq Tun. As far as main characters go, I don't think I've ever seen their likeness. Sold separately into slavery by their orc mother early on in life, they eventually escaped and found each other again, only to grow up without guidance on the streets of a town called Veldaren, scavenging for food and learning that sometimes in life, when you come from nothing, it's better to kill than be killed. Qurrah is a spindly and coldly intelligent sort whose greatest passion is to become a powerful sorcerer. Harruq, on the other hand, is a large-bodied and (sometimes) kind-hearted oaf who exists seemingly only to protect his physically weaker brother. The dialogue between the two borders on hilarious in the early going, when they're still nothing but vagrants. But there is something darker in them, mostly in regards to Qurrah, which begging to be released. They are archetypal antiheroes, existing on the periphery of a society that wants no part of them.
The story starts off with a bang, dropping us in on the brothers as an army of orcs attempts to invade Veldaren. It is here that we first meet Velixar, a necromancer and master of the dark arts, who eventually takes the brothers under his wing. Through Velixar, we also are presented with a sizeable chunk of the world Dalglish has created, which is notable if for no other reason than it gives the reader a frame of reference to draw upon further down the road.
The novel is chock full of intense and extremely graphic battle scenes. It would be easy to get lost in the action if these scenes weren't expertly crafted, which they are. The actions the brothers take from the onset vary from miscreant to downright evil. They butcher women, children, whole families, mostly without batting an eyelash. Even when one of them seemingly finds love, through the appearance of a beautiful sorcerer elf named Aurelia, this does little to stifle the loathsome behavior. Qurrah and Harruq appear to be brutes, ostensibly without a soul, and they act as such.
That statement is not quite true, however, and herein lays the brilliance of the world author Dalglish has created. This is a story of their fall and hopefully redemption, though as a series, once we reach the end it is still in the early stages. But the hope is there that these two will find their way. We get to see inside the brothers' heads, and what we find there, though disturbing, allows us to feel a glimmer of gallantry. They are capable of love - this much is evident by the way they feel about each other - and any being who can experience that emotion in its fullest and most vulnerable can eventually learn to harness that inner goodness. All they ever needed was guidance, something that was denied them through unfortunate circumstances beyond their control.
And this is where we come to the crux of the fable that the author is telling us. In many ways, the brothers' situation mirrors events we see all the time in the "real world". They have nothing, they are starving and ostracized. Everyone looks down on them. They wander through life without a purpose save staying alive. When one looks at it like this, is it any wonder that when a stranger approaches the destitute pair and offers them a life that has meaning they leap for it? They who have nothing are promised the world. They who've been looked at as the lowest of the low are told they will be worshiped as gods. They who have had to scrape and claw are given gifts of such power that they become death incarnate. When viewed from this vantage point, can we not understand, even sympathize, with the plight Qurrah and Harruq have been forced to deal with? If we, as civilized humans, were put in the same situation, would our morality not begin to wither and die after a while? This rings true with what happens every day in certain parts of the world. It is almost the very blueprint for terrorist recruitment. And at the end of the day, that is what the brothers become. Terrorists. They target not only the enemy but the young and innocent. They strike from the shadows, seeking to assist a greater agenda that they either don't or can't understand.
This is a very dark book, so take that as a warning. If you don't like the images of flayed arms and legs, decapitation, or bodies reduced to quivering masses of blood and innards, stay far away. However, if you appreciate a well-told story that pulls you into its world and won't let you back out, this is the novel for you. It is unrelenting and fast-paced. It makes you care about the characters, no matter what bad deeds they may perform. And, best of all, it allows you to feel hope that the characters will turn it all around, and through something as simple as an act of kindness.
In short, I loved "The Weight of Blood". The title says it all. It's about the inherent price of violence, the duty of family, and the pressure to do what's right. I would definitely recommend it. As far as fantasy goes, I feel you'd be hard pressed to find one that equals its scope and passion. I, for one, can't wait to get pulled into the next volume.

Priest's Spell Compendium, Volume 1 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) ReviewAD&D always needed some sort of compendium to gather all the materials it has spawned over the years. It has been done to magical items, artifacts, wizard spells, and now - priest spells. I don't see how one can argue against this book: all the spells are copied correctly , with no changes from their original entries ( sources are quoted, as always). It's an incredible thing to own a gathering of spells where you can just flip through the pages and pick a spell instead of going through tons of useless materials. Also, the format is great - "Tome" look is very soulful. I also enjoyed the notacion and the font, both of which are very good and readable.Priest's Spell Compendium, Volume 1 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) Overview

Plague of Spells (Forgotten Realms: Abolethic Sovereignty, Book 1) ReviewLovecraftian Horror in Faerun. If that was the goal of the book, it missed the mark completely. The book reads like players playing through a typical D&D Adventure rather than characters adventuring through a story.
Plot: 5/10
This is a pretty basic Dungeons and Dragons adventure that takes place during the Spell Plague. Faerun is engulfed in blue flame and then the book skips ahead 10 years. Most of Faerun has been destroyed and malevolent creatures roam the lands. Characters begin a quest to recover a powerful artifact claimed by a mighty enemy. The book begins almost as three separate stories, then the characters meet and attempt to recover the lost artifact.
Setting: 6/10
The book's setting is the most interesting part. The world is in turmoil, cities have been reduced to ruins, and creatures have been malformed. Refugees band together for survival. Mages cannot rely on their spellcraft... This is an interesting twist to the Forgotten Realms Series.
However, most of the book takes place at sea, where the sea is just like every other sea. The book should have stayed in the more interesting parts of Faerun. The audience is really excited to see how Faerun has changed during the Spell Plague, but this book takes most of the action away from that.
Characters: 4/10
The adventuring party is composed of a band of unique characters. A mysterious captain, a drug addicted warlock, a mage, a monk, a Kuo-Toan Whip, and a girl with mysterious powers. The character's physical descriptions are glossed over and for the most part are pretty uninteresting. They don't really act like they are in an adventure together. They just respond to their immediate surroundings... and that's it. You really never get a sense of what motivates these characters. They all seem very superficial.
Dialogue: 3/10
The dialogue reads like people playing Dungeons and Dragons. There's no emotion behind what they say. There's really nothing guiding their actions except for the main quest and they rarely communicate with each other. Some of the lines had me cringing, they were so bad. "Ok, fishy face, don't get your scales in a bunch." If a monster enters the room, someone says, "A monster!" Someone else sarcastically says, "Brilliant." You don't get much more than that.
Writing Style: 4/10
Lots of the paragraphs are anti-climactic, where the last line undermines the previous lines.
Here's an example:
At one point, one of the characters finds a powerful weapon and they're ready to head off and battle the main enemy. The book reads, "Afterward, he would turn his hand to the multitude of lesser moral failings still plaguing Toril." So forget about the big-bad that's gonna destroy the world, we're gonna go catch us some muggers in alleys.
There is a great deal of set up for the largest battle in the book, then the book skips over that battle and talks about what happened in it after the fact.
The last battle in the game is very short and ends in a cliffhanger. It almost feels like half of a battle.
The action in the book is really hard to visualize, too. I had to keep re-reading the scenes to figure out what was going on.
Horror: 6/10
Most of the book is not scary at all, but there are few scenes that are really good and save the book.
I really wanted to like this book, but I was very disappointed. Bruce Cordell gets points for tackling the Spell Plague, but then loses points for not taking advantage of it. I guess I could recommend this book to D&D players who want some basic inspiration for a Spell Plague campaign setting, but that's about it.

Wizard's Spell Compendium, Vol. 4 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) ReviewA good compilation of spells. I like the tables in the front of this (the first) book. I understand this is not meant to be a rule book, but some help on where to find rules on chronomancers would be nice, since there are a fair number of spells for them in here. Recommend getting 1st and 4th books before obtaining rest so that you get the tables and index.Wizard's Spell Compendium, Vol. 4 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) Overview

Spell Compendium (Dungeons & Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying) ReviewWotc is notorious for padding their books because let's face it, in the last year or so, Wotc has released more hardcovers than every book printed for the entire 1st edition. While each of these books contains patches of solid, if not essential material, one can't help but think Wotc could have compressed all this info into fewer volumes.
Could have, but that's not the nature of capitalism, now is it?
Quibbling aside, this is one volume that dispels the notion of padding and then some. Not since the Player's Handbook has any single book been so essential to the game. Sure, prestige classes are nice, but we dump 90% of them into the garbage and wonder why we bought the book in the first place.
But that's not the case with spells.
Spells rule the world of D&D. There's a spell for every occasion and players can never have enough at their disposal. In the past, if you wanted that choice spell to fight the lich you needed to have the right book handy, a book you most likely carried about simply for that four sentence spell description. Well, now you have more than a thousand at your beck and call and the cumbersome Complete series, not to mention the Bovd and Libris Mortis, can just stay at home.
Let me just say this book is solid, well constructed, and lays out everything you'll want to have for a spellcaster (unless perhaps you're a warlock). The only drawbacks are that the original sources are not referenced and there is no index or table of contents for the spells themselves. The former seemed like a bad idea at first, but now we have a host of new core spells to play with, spells that can't be thrown out because they originated in the Forgotten Realms or other campaign settings. The latter problem of no index is solved simply by looking at the spellcaster tables at the back, which doubles as the index, anyway.
This is the first book I have bought from Wizards in more than a year that I feel wholly satisfied about. It's nice to see a solid compilation that lightens my tote-bag and introduces new material at the same time.Spell Compendium (Dungeons & Dragons d20 3.5 Fantasy Roleplaying) Overview
